Grade 5-7-In this introductory survey, Panchyk describes major events throughout the great conflict in nearly every theater of operation. While the main focus is on America's part in the war, life in England and other European countries is given careful attention. A special aspect of this work is the variety of informative activities appearing in substantial sidebars. Through them, readers can vicariously go on a reconnaissance mission, grow a victory garden, track a ship's movements using latitude and longitude, live on rations for a day, and experience other aspects of wartime life. Adult help and/or permission is suggested for many of the projects. One involves labeling alternate halves of a class of students with special armbands and simulating discrimination; teacher involvement is not mentioned in the instructions. Summarized or quoted first-person accounts by World War II participants are integral parts of this book, which also includes letters and journal entries by soldiers and civilians in both Allied and Axis countries. A large selection of black-and-white contemporary photographs and reproductions of such items as ration stamps and propaganda posters further contribute to the book's immediacy. My son and I are using this and so far we LOVE it. He almost begs me to do WWII because this book is so well written. My son is 11. The activities are pretty fun and engaging and I have to say that we go pretty slow with the book because we keep talking about all of the information and getting deeper into discussions. Very good pick to get your kids into history.
loved reading his book with my son -- was worried that it may not be age appropriate but the author has done a good job in explaining the events so that children can related to what actually occured
This is a great book for engaged children who want to learn more about this complex topic. My husband read it aloud to our elementary school aged children and they (and he!) thoroughly enjoyed it. Not surprisingly, reading about WWII sparks more questions than answers and we found that it was necessary to read with our children despite their full ability to read more lengthy texts independently. Well worth the time!
My 7 year old nephew is a history buff and I purchased this for him for his WWII themed birthday. It's challenging to find WWII themed items that are appropriate for children. I was happy to see that this book had lots of wonderful photographs and illustrations along with ample factual information to make him happy.
This was a Christmas present for a friends son. He is into military and his favorite war is WW2. He was not able to keep his head out of the book once he opened it. He was reading while walking out the door when it was time to go home. Its a great book. Extremely informative and the activities give kids a better understanding.
This was a comprehensive book but it contains way too much text for the average child. It said it is for ages 9 and up but I'd say it's more for 12 and up.It seems to me to be more appropriate for adult TEACHERS to use as a supplemental guide when teaching WWII. There are some interesting activities included.
My 10 year old grandson loved this book. I gave it to him just before he visited some of the D-Day sites in Normandy.
My 7 year old Grandson loves history. This was a great purchase for him. He really enjoyed reading about the war.
