That's what I muttered to myself when I finished "The Book of Lost Things." I said that and then I said this writer is seriously talented. From the start this book grabs your attention and carries you through an imaginary world and doesn't let you go again until the very last page. I wish every book I picked up was this good. I would be exceedingly happy!The Crooked Man is the worse villian and the boy, the best hero. I read this book in two days because I had to find out what would happen next. It was wonderful.

The story begins with David, obsessing over his “routine” (see: OCD) that he believes will save his mother from her life threatening illness. Unfortunately, David is unable to save her and his mother succumbs to the illness and dies. Some time after (side note: a little TOO soon after the death of David’s mother, if you ask me) David’s father remarries a woman named Rose and nine months later she gives birth to a son. It is around this time that David begins having “episodes,” moments where he blacks out and wakes up with no recollection of what happened while he was asleep. Poor David feels as if he is all alone in the world, as his father is working for the government and therefore is never home. So David is stuck in Rose’s giant house with just Rose, (who he loathes) and his new brother Georgie for company. David does his best to avoid these two and instead buries his nose in his books, as they remind him of his mother.Rose tries her best to make David feel comfortable, and even gives her the room of her late uncle, Jonathan Tulvey. The room is filled with Jonathan’s books and trinkets and David takes comfort in seeing that someone is as connected to stories as he is. David becomes curious and asks Rose about Jonathan and she explains that when he was younger he and his little sister vanished into thin air one day. David becomes intrigued by this and as time passes he begins to hear the books in his room talk to him, and he begins to dream of a very sinister man, whom he names “The Crooked Man.” These dreams become twisted with reality and as time passes, David travels to another world in which the fairy tale characters he has grown up reading about exist. However, these characters are not the same kind and caring versions that he has grown up to love. They are sinister and grim versions, each twisted into a new form.These characters were one of the absolute best parts of the story. I don’t want to spoil the fun for you so I will just touch upon some awesomeness. First, Snow White is a fat, disgusting and mean person. Second, Ever wonder where werewolves came from? Little Red Riding Hood had some issues with bestiality (I promise the story does NOT go into detail at this point, thank goodness, because, EW.) and the Crooked Man is quite possibly one of the creepiest villains I have yet to encounter (Rumple who?) There was also a rather kind woodsman, a loyal knight and an extremely creepy Sleeping “Beauty” thrown into the mix. All of these characters David met on his journey to see the King, the ruler of the land, who was having a very hard time ruling. David learns something from each encounter and it is through these extremely trying situations that the reader is able to see him grow from a spoiled, selfish child into a mature and kind young man.When pondering the setting to this story I realized how unique John Connolly writes. Ultimately, he was just writing about a vast forest, a small town, and a few huge castles. Yet, in my mind I saw a darkness creeping from the corners of my imagination toward David. I saw lights extinguishing behind him as he walked down the long corridor, I saw the trees sway when there was no wind. These are things Connolly simply hinted at yet I was able to pick up on these subtle images and make them into something that made me afraid as if I was the one walking through this land.The Book of Lost Things is harrowing and phenomenal. I haven’t been so enthralled by a novel of this genre since reading The Child Thief by Brom. It was deeply imaginative and sinister enough to have even the bravest adult looking over their shoulder while reading.

There are a lot of books out there that reinterpret familiar fairy tales, especially the tales of the Brothers Grimm. Some adopt an ironic or metafictional approach and address the reader directly about the meaning and nature of the tales. Some rely on the brothers themselves as the main protagonists. Many borrow familiar characters and repackage them with humorous, political, satirical, or literary messages of varying degrees of explicitness. Some, at the middle grade level, go for laughs, thrills, zany antics, or chuckles.This book takes an entirely different tack. David's story could have just been presented as a straight up fantasy quest in an imaginary alternate world. But, Connolly upped the ante and the rewards by incorporating his reimagined versions of the Grimms' tales and characters into his larger story of loss, growth and discovery. As a consequence we get the touching tale of David's quest seasoned with a literate and compelling reconsideration of the world as filtered through the Grimms' sensibilities.There is a lot to admire here, from the elegant writing to the sympathetic story of David to the deft handling of the fairy tale material. Sometimes this can be stern and sad stuff, and I wouldn't automatically call this a middle grade read just because of the young protagonist and the fairy tale content. But that said, this is a laudable and impressive, (and very entertaining), approach to fairy tales and for me was a happy find.

I had initially purchased the Audible recording because it was slightly cheaper than the book, which seemed a little short. I am also familiar with Philip Carr-Gomm's recordings and figured that I would enjoy the reading. As a audiobook, the production is stunning. As per usual, Philip delivers the reading with aplomb, but my greatest pleasure came from (I believe) Sophia Carr-Gomm's reading of Elidir's teaching. I'm not sure what it was, but the meat of the book was simply brought to life by her voice. I highly recommend the Audible recording.Because I enjoyed the recording so much, I purchased the book to have in my library. I wanted to be able to refer to the text as necessary, because I quite appreciated the content. In my opinion, the book upholds the teachings distributed by the Order of Bards Ovates & Druids. There are not a lot of surprises if you're familiar with OBOD's lessons. However, the history of the first chapters was great to read (and hear). I find Philip's writing fantastic, and getting another take on the Order's teachings is always appreciated. The price of the book seemed a little steep for 134 pages, but it really is a beautiful book. I am glad that I purchased it, if for no other reason that it may act as a bit of a stepping stone to the Order's complete teachings.

I listen to it on my way to and from work everyday. Read by author, Philip Carr-Gomm, his wife, Stephanie & daughter, Sophia, I especially love their voices. The content is excellent, too. With traditional stories, discussion of content and historical context, I rather wish everyone would read it.I never really resonated with Wicca, I'm much more of a staid Druid type. This book explains the beliefs held in common by both, as well as their contemporary origins.Also, includes blessing rituals, a basic explanation of the different types of magic, and elementary spellcraft.Highly recommended.

I purchased the audio book and the kindle version. I have to tell you that of all the audio books I have purchased, this one is my absolute favorite. It is so well done!!! The voices are rich and pure! The music that plays between chapters is so beautiful and perfect! I just love it. I bought the kindle version as well for those times when I can't listen to it and also for quick reference. This book has come into my life just when I truely needed it. Funny how synchronicity occurs like that. :-)So for any of you that were wondering about the quality of the audio book...It is Wonderful! Don't hesitate to purchase the spoken version along with your written version. The audio book is a complete unabridged version of the paperback. So Wonderful to listen to it. The stories in the book take on more meaning for me when listening to them spoken with the rich, clear voices of the author and his lady narrators. Thank you so much for this audio book. It is such a pleasure and a joy to hear!!!

This audiobook not only has incredible narration, the added ambience here and there, make it simply enchanting. The merging of Druidry and Witchcraft is presented in a way that leaves you wanting to dive in further into the magic and mystery by becoming apprenticed to the this craft. If you study druidry, magic, witchcraft, Wicca, etc, you will simply love this.

Again, Philip Carr-Comm is the author I look to for the last word on Druidry. His depth of knowledge and his obvious dedication to the Druid way illuminate everything he writes on the subject.

A great book for beginners or novices who want to practice nature-based spirituality in a way that is gentle, intuitive, and re-affirming of one's own views of the world. Would make a good book for a discussion group or class.

I love this deck. I haven't had a chance to read much of the book, but happy it came with it. There are many aspects of druidry and wicca that speak to me and this deck combines them well. It arrived quickly and was well worth the money.

The Craft and Art of Clay by Susan Peterson, Jan Peterson is the first book I have bought on line. I had borrowed it from the University (I am a 2nd year student at Southern Cross) library and when I found myself extending the loan I thought it would be worth purchasing this book. It is even better now I own it. Its simple approach to this art that I have not done before makes this book refreshingly easy to read. It can be used for looking up specifics and for a general thumb-through, for interest.As a person new to ceramics I wanted a book that wouldn't talk over my head and I also didn't want to read it through then find it has nothing more to offer.I have found this book to have both basic and advanced information in an easy to read form. I am very happy to recommend it to every and anyone interested in starting to work with clay for students studying 3D and in particular ceramics and I am sure I will continue refer back to this book, throughout my professional career.

This book is a large coffee table type book that is absolutely lovely with beautiful pictures, very interesting - well written and covers most every subject a potter, ceramist, student of the clay, any type artist, would enjoy.

I got this as a text for a college ceramics course, but it is far more than an ordinary text book. Not only is it informative on a variety of ceramic styles and techniques, but features lovely color illustrations of ceramics from a variety of times, places and artistic traditions. It is as much a coffee table book as a text.

The book had many pictures of finished products and a lot to read. I am visual and was thinking maybe it would show step by step pictures and how it is done. I have never used clay or done any sort of pottery, so it didn't really help me. I bought it for my class in college, but I never used it. Instead, I just got my hands dirty and learned by doing.

This is a most useful and interesting book for anyone interested in clay.It provides tons of information on history, process, various techniques, particular artists, and is wonderfully illustrated. It is not only informative but also beautiful to leaf through. I'm glad I sent for it.

This is a great book for anyone who wants to work with clay. It is clearly written with prospective and actual studio potters in mind.The book originally came out in 1992, and is now in its fourth edition. And, after mentioning some safety issues, it has plenty of instructional material on how to shape clay, and what tools to use. There are sections on hand building: pinching, coil building, and slab building. Then there's plenty about the technique of "throwing" clay on a potter's wheel, with nice sequences of photos. This takes plenty of skill and practice! As the author says, the wheel is very sensuous, rhythmic, and hypnotic. Peterson is always warning us to treat clay properly: if you attack it in one way and then hit it from another direction in the same place, you may find cracks there in firing, induced by the strains you imposed on it. It's simply wrong to overwork clay.Still, many potters and artists like to produce many objects with the same overall shape. And that means making and using molds made from plaster, and making casting slips, so Peterson shows us quite a bit about these. After this comes a discussion of decoration. This involves artistry and visualization.There is a good discussion of types of clays, and explanations of what earthenware, stoneware, and porcelain are. We're shown different types of clay bodies, including terra sigillata and raku (a process which requires a clay body that has some dirt mixed in with it to make it porous enough to avoid thermal shock). And there is a wonderful chapter on glazes. Following that, there is plenty about kilns and firing, including using cones, inconel tubes, and pyrometers to measure temperature.A technical section explains how to do calculations on glazes, and there are charts of coefficients of expansion, data on frits, color charts of clay and glaze combinations, and much more.There is a historical overview, which includes a discussion of the studio potter movement and the contributions to it from Bernard Leach and Shoji Hamada. And we see some of the work of Maria Martinez and Lucy Lewis in Pueblo Indian ceramics. There is also an excellent portfolio of interesting works. I especially like some of the low-fire ones.This is a very useful resource and I highly recommend it.

By His Grace and for His Glory: A Historical, Theological and Practical Study of the Doctrines of Grace in Baptist Life by Tom Nettles is a thorough (if you didn't get that from the title) look at the impact that the Doctrines of Grace have and should have on Baptist life. Tom Nettles is a world class scholar who brings a lifetime of study of history and doctrine to this book and the result is a product that will bless all who read it. As the subtitle states, this book is divided into three sections: Historical, Theological and Practical and I want to briefly comment on each section.The historical section begins with the division of General and Particular Baptist (which arose out of the Jacob, Lathrop, Jessey Separatist church) in England. Tom Nettles has written a 3 volume work on baptist history and this section provides a condensed look at many of these important figures. Nettles provides a historical walk which includes brief biographical sketches of over 30 key figures. What is helpful about this approach, as opposed to reading individual biographies, is that the reader is able to trace key thoughts and ideas in baptist history as they are presented and fought for. Many of these men faced opposition that was unique to their time period and moving chronologically helps the reader to better understand how thoughts and ideas developed. Obviously in such limited space many details are going to be left out, but this approach gives the reader a great overview of baptist history. Many of the men in this section are Southern Baptist. As someone who is not a part of the SBC I found this section a blessing as I was not familiar with some of these men. The best summary I can give of this section is that Nettles knows his history and he has blessed the church with a wonderful look at baptist history and the impact of the doctrines of grace.The second section is the theological section. Here, Nettles examines the doctrines of grace as a theological system. Nettles begins each chapter in this section with a brief definition of the doctrine being discussed (Total Depravity and Effectual Calling/Irresistible Grace are combined into one chapter). He also addresses some of the difficulties and arguments against the doctrine that are raised by others. This section is brief (just over 80 pages) but provides a helpful look at these doctrines as well as providing many quotes from Baptist history to show how these doctrines shaped Baptist life.The third section focuses on the practical, specifically how these doctrines provide assurance, liberty of conscience and the effect on world missions and bold evangelism. As someone who is currently looking into missions work, this last section was a great blessing to me. Anyone who holds to the doctrines of grace is aware of the many caricatures and false claims that exist. Probably the most known one is that Calvinism kills missions. I cannot state enough how Nettles dismantles this false claim. These doctrines, rightly understood, are what fuels missions. I know that personally, if I did not believe that God has chosen His people before the foundation of the world and that He WILL draw them to himself I would never entertain the idea of going to the mission field. Thankfully God is Sovereign in both the saving of sinners and over the means in which they get saved (through the foolishness of preaching). I am thankful for this book as it provides a thorough look at various areas of Baptist life and how the Doctrines of Grace relate to them all.I received a copy of this book from Founders Press in exchange for an honest review.

Mr. Nettles doesn't chase a great deal of theological debate to defend the Doctrines of Grace. He simply presents the history of those who have defended it through the centuries.The book is well organized and well written and anyone who completes its 428 pages will be better off for it.If it doesn't convince you that the "Doctrines of Grace" are nothing more than the faith once delivered to the saints, you will at least come away with a greater view of the Sovereignty of our God.

I thought that I had a good understanding of the Doctrines of Grace until I read Prof. Nettles book. Chapter 12 - Christ Died for Our Sins, According to the Scriptures, is the most awe inspiring argument for Particular Redemption that I have read by a modern theologian. I once thought I was a "fish out of water", being a Calvinistic Southern Baptist. But, now I realize the depth of the soil from which I have grown. I wish modern Southern Baptists were as faithful to Sola Scriptura as the Founders of the Southern Baptist Convention were.

The book contains a history of the doctrines of grace against the backdrop of the early Baptist preachers. Dr. Nettles also includes a wonderful primer on soteriology at the end of the book. A great resource for Baptists who want to know their history and who are looking for an introduction to the doctrines of grace.

I found this book fairly disappointing and relatively boring. In a more generous frame of mind I might have rated it three stars, but...1. Characterization annoyed me throughout. For example, the protagonist, a young college student, is depicted from the beginning as an incredibly self-sacrificing human being. She attends a fairly expensive private school, which her parents don't begin to have the money to pay for. To make her own way, she studies most of the hours of the day (to guarantee the continuation of the scholarships she has earned) and works for wages the rest of her awake hours to pay the balance due on her tuition as well as to sneak money into her parents' bank accounts to help them with their mortgage payments. Beyond admirable, yes? Except that she has a sister with whom she doesn't get along, and this sister early on accuses her of having caused their parents' financial trouble by turning down the full scholarship she had been offered to a State University in favor of the expense of the private school. So what was wrong with the State School, or what is so great about the Private College? Who knows? The book certainly never says. Except that the protagonist described in this novel would not have made the same choices. This may sound like a small problem of consistency except that it is typical of this story's characterizations.2. After a fairly tedious plot the novel finally reaches an end with NOTHING at all resolved. Beyond this lack of resolution the final chapters offer a new cliff-hanger about the death or survival or something in between of another character about whom we are supposed to care.I shouldn't have bought the next book in this trilogy even without the problems I have been trying to describe. With them, I can only warn a future potential reader to save his or her time and money.

Although young adult fiction isn’t my favorite genre, I do enjoy it occasionally and “Gateway to Fourline” looked like the most promising pick for Kindle First in November. All things considered, it was probably the right choice even though I didn’t love it.As you can tell from the descriptions and the sample, this is a “doorway to another world” fantasy rather than a magic/magical creatures fantasy. It is well written and a light easy read but definitely YA in its simplicity. The characters are pretty basic but the author did a good job of presenting the pressures faced by college students. Overall, it may be a bit too simple for many adults but I suspect that teens may enjoy it a lot. Certainly there isn’t anything objectionable for younger readers in intensity, language, violence or sex. Yes, there is some violence but it is brief and not graphic. Sex is limited to a kiss although I did worry early in the book that she might be going down the “Twilight” path :)As I read I thought this would probably be a mild four star recommendation for the right audience but then the book ended abruptly on a virtual cliffhanger. That is an absolute deal breaker for me. I like series books but expect each book to stand on its own. Fortunately this kindle version includes a “preview” of the next book so you do get some idea of what happened next but not much.If you like young adult fiction and don’t mind waiting for the next book for resolution to most questions, you may enjoy this a lot. Otherwise this is pretty much just OK.

I got this book through the Kindle First Program. This is the first time I have used this option, and I was not disappointed.Fourline is a fantasy land that is having a bad time. A band of not-nice creatures, the Nala, who apparently look like some kind of cross between spiders and birds has joined forces with a usurper who is apparently responsible for the death of the country’s lawful regent to destabilize the country. The young prince, rightful heir to the kingdom, accompanied by a small band of guardians, has made his way through a mysterious portal into our world.Natalie (Nat) is a cash-strapped college student in the town where Estos (the prince) and his people have landed. When she is looking for a job to make extra money for school to help her parents out, the Fourliners offer to hire her to work in their costume shop. After she has been mystified by the goings on there for long enough, they reveal just enough of their problem to get Nat to go into Fourline and run an errand for them. When that is successful, a few days later they offer her more money to do a longer mission. Ultimately they wind up offering to pay her entire next year’s tuition to entice her to undertake a major operation that will allow them to safely return to Fourline themselves. In order to accomplish this they have to extensively train her in fighting skills, their herbal medicine, and how to conduct herself in Fourline so that she doesn’t give everything away and ruin the mission.I found this to be a thoroughly engaging book. The story kept moving along with hardly a dull moment. There were a number of questions still unanswered at the end, which came more abruptly than I would have expected, but that just leaves plenty of room for the promised sequels. Also, it leaves the current book short enough to be finished easily.
