Raised in Berkeley, California, Michael Stokes is a Los Angeles-based photographer. He graduated first in his class and Phi Beta Kappa with a Fine Art degree through the film department at California State University, Long Beach.Michael's first coffee table book, Masculinity (2012), was a glamour-styled, photographic male figure study book that is currently out of print. In the same style as his first, his second book, Bare Strength (2014), features a chapter on wounded veterans of war, specifically amputees. In 2014, Michael collaborated with the publisher Taschen to produce My Buddy, supplying the publisher with his collection of vintage photos of nude WWII soldiers.Michael's third and fourth books, Exhibition and Always Loyal released 2015. Exhibition continues the exploration and celebration of the male figure, while Always Loyal is dedicated exclusively to wounded United States veterans. Invictus features wounded veterans of war, specifically amputees and also includes veterans from the British armed forces. These photos and the use of light made me see the people behind the photo. Then I read their stories. This book is a thought provoking and stunning collection honoring veterans wounded in the battles they have fought.

Being a fan of military veterans this book caught my attention as a "had to own". Mr Stokes has built such a rapport with these men and women who have sacrificed for us and that rapport shows. The veterans have been beautifully posed, the backgrounds just set them off and it is a book that I treasure.

I ordered this book from Michael Stokes website, because I wanted a signed copy. As someone who has collected art books for at least 30 years, I was amazed when I opened this book, and found something truly extraordinary, unlike anything I had encountered previously. Michael's artistry and humanity shines forth in this remarkable endeavor. Here he is celebrating the ability of the human spirit to adapt to whatever madness and misfortune is thrown it's way. These men, and one woman, are incredibly brave and most likely they were quite surprised to see themselves portrayed in this book in a way none of them could have ever imagined. Michael has honored their vulnerability and courageousness and the resultis stunning and very meaningful. I am not surprised that some viewers might have a hard time accepting loss of limbs and sexiness coexisting in these images. Everyone has the right, no matter their circumstances, to proudly flaunt their peacock feathers, so to speak, and they are still very much sexual beings, no matter what horrendous events may have changed their physicality. Michael applauds them and their wish to be as vibrant and beautiful as ever. The sheer determination in the faces of these former warriors gives us all hope that we be could be equally brave if life hit us as hard as it has hit them. They may have been knocked down by the ravages of war, but they roar their defiance. The society is quick to say, on no you can't, but they are the human spirit at it greatest triumph. An ignorant person might misunderstand the whole premise of this book. If someone has been torn asunder by war, how could they possibly think they had any sexiness left to give? These folks give you sexiness and then some! They are not a sideshow with Michael as the barker, they are in your face saying, I just went through something most of you couldn't imagine happening in your wildest dreams, and I am here to teach you that anyone can come back from slipping down into the abyss of what has to be the most unimaginable human tragedy and agony conceivable. Michael, your artistry and compassion and warmth shows through in this remarkable book. You have done something that has elevated the art of the art book to a new level. Also doing good for your fellow man is the central thread here, and it was so lovely of you to donate some proceeds from the book sales to help these groups. I hope in my own small way that a little bit of cash from the book I purchased finds it way to help as well. We have certainly become a world where looksism has made anyone who looks different feel left out, or worse judged. I was most impressed by the photographs side by side of the same person looking very whole, and then not quite as whole, and being vulnerable is okay, and who among us is perfect. Also, the hater always hates themselves to the greatest degree. I'm sure these folks have endured the most vile of human behavior imaginable. The stories of some of these men toward of the end of the book were heartwarming and so reassuring. When you are having a bad hair day, or got a parking ticket, just imagine how challenging life would be to have been devastated by war both emotionally and physically. And then they have to pick themselves up and dust themselves off, and their true friends will be there for them, not the good time Charlies. I was drawn to this book in part because my late father John, had such physical adversity. He never fought in a war, but he suffered MD and polio as a child, but through determination and much effort and the inability to accept the word Can't in his vocabulary, he lived almost to 84. His doctors had written him off as having a great chance of dying in his teens, but he was not having that !!! I wish these men, and the one lady in the book, all the happiness in the world, all the brightest of futures despite their circumstances. Your lives have certainly been changed by this book, and Michael's as well. You folks need to give us that facial expression when we get too silly about life's minor mishaps. If we live 1000 years, most of us, we would never have been tested in the ways you folks were, and wish you well as you deal with all this. Michael, Bravo to you, you are magnificent in your abilities as an artist, and I hope there will be much more magic coming forth from your lens in the near future. Based on the release dates of your books you seem quite prolific!! I have collected many of your books, but in my opinion, this one is your masterpiece, your Sistine Chapel, your Mona Lisa!, your Guernica !!!I will treasure this book forever!! THANK YOU!!!

Very weak on the content side, for a paperback. I did not want the Kindle version for travel convenience, and frankly it would be overpriced if you paid the digital cost. Content is simplistic, and seems like something that was developed for a blog. While there are ideas that seem interesting, too much of the 74 pages is spent on hyping side trips that seem to be hustling for a few tour operators. Even the interesting suggestions are not unique and can be retrieved with a hour or two of web surfing.While 74 pages isn't a lot to start with, the font size is quite large and the layout leaves too much white space. Overall the content could fit in 40 pages with some crisp editing. One major oversight is the lack of even simple, maps. There is no concept of distance, and this was most noticeable in the Sicily section (its not a small island).Overall I'd suggest readers pass on the book. Spending twice as much on other tour books will get you twenty times times the content.

This was a very good starting point. I have since read some other publications on Kickstarter that were a little more in depth, but as it is one of the "For Dummies" books, it is what I expected.Definitely helps make the decision early on if Kickstarter is right for you, as it point out all the things that someone starting their first one may tend to forget. I read this while on a train, so I wasn't interacting with Kickstarter at the time, and that may have been the biggest help as I read it all the way through before even starting, then had it open on my Kindle as I worked on it.Definitely a worthwhile read if you're thinking about doing your first Kickstarter campaign, or if you've failed at one before.

Most of this info you can get online and it was more for artists (like entirely) not inventors, however it still was a good quick read of the whole kickstarter process without digging around on the net. It wasn't too expensive, so if you like books to get some of your info from, this isn't a terrible one since you will get at least some good insight into the whole process.

Some decent advice in this book for beginners, but nothing terrific common sense wouldn't lead the average entrepreneur to do on their own. It's a bit dated and could really use a refresh. Kickstarter has come a long way since this book was written.

Although useful, this book is very very basic. I recommend it as a first read before moving on to a more in depth sophisticated explanation of starting and running a kickstarter campaign. Appropriately titled, it really is a book for dummies on the subject. I did find it easy to understand and to get the basics - therefore i do recommend it... good luck!!!

Perhaps it is in line with the Dummies format (I am unfamiliar), but I was hoping for more. It will get the job done.

I didn't finish it yet but... it's great! It's really really great!Aly Raisman is so brave to write honestly about her experiences in gymnastics. It is people like her who have the courage to take a stand for what they believe in that are going to change the world, impact lives, and hopefully change sport.This book is unique in that it is not another "fluffy" athlete book. Parts of it are upsetting, devastating, infuriating... disgusting. Raisman even talks about the culture of USA Gymnastics and how they neglected their athletes. Hopefully the culture of the organization will change to be kinder, healthier, safer, and more human than it has been in the past. With these positive changes I could see American gymnastics reaching heights never before seen or dreamed possible.

Hopefully Aly's story will encourage other girls to stand up for themselves and what's right. Especially interesting in light of all that's happened with the sexual abuse of gymnasts at all levels of the sport. It left me with a lot of questions as far as how USA Gymnastics treats their athletes. Bought it for my 11 year old niece who is taking gymnastics lessons, competing, and loves Aly Raisman

This is one of the best gymnastics books I've read. Aly is honest and real in this book. It was refreshing to read an honest account of an Olympic gymnast's experience since so many of the other Olympic gymnasts' books are full of fluff and material that isn't believable.

This book was excellent in every way. Aly was real, genuine, humble and totally honest in being vulnerable to her readers. I had no idea how hard gymnasts have to work to be at her level. I recommend this book to all as it has such a clear message of hope.

Aly writes a poignant tale of her rise to gymnastics and personal success. Gratitude and humility pour over the pages. The courage she displays while being vulnerable about her insecurities, fears and even survivorship of abuse is inspiring. Aly's passion and positive attitude serve as a reminder that our youth are our brightest asset for a better future!

A memoir of sorts, "Fierce" is written from a first person perspective and outlines the life events and experiences of Olympic gold-medalist, Aly Raisman. From childhood memories of Olympic dreams to finally sticking one last Olympic floor routine, Aly Raisman engages the reader by inviting them into her journey from not-so-talented child gymnast to one of the most well-recognized athletes in the sport.But "Fierce" goes far beyond Olympic achievement and the sport of gymnastics; "Fierce" tells an amazing story of an incredibly driven, hardworking, and passionate individual, determined to use her platform as a means for bringing positive change to the world. Within the pages of "Fierce", Aly shares intimate details of her life, discussing topics like mental health, body positivity, and child safety.I could go on, but I think it'd be best if you just went ahead and bought a copy yourself. Overall, I give this book a 5/5 stars and would honestly recommend it to anyone (gymnastics enthusiast or not).Note: If you're interested, on the opposite side of the dust jacket (the paper part of a book that wraps around the outside of a hardcover) is a poster of Aly on what I believe to be Day 6 of the 2016 Rio Olympics (dimensions, approximately 8.5 in by 20 in). Ibn Saud, like Jalaladin Akbar has some remarkable characteristics that grace the greatest of history's leaders. Charismatic, fearless and magnanimous in victory, Ibn Saud's creation of a unified Arabia, much like the efforts of Otto Von Bismarck in Germany, is marked by cunning and daring and a willingness to attack any defeat rather than let it lie. Because of the insular nature of the harem and family life, this book is only a glimpse into the life of one of history's most interesting founding fathers. The book's strongest point is it bibliography, both its length and breadth so that the reader may explore other subjects that arise in the telling of the Saudi tale.

This is a must read for anyone who wants to understand Contemporary geopolitics. Why Saudi Arabia is the way it is han been very well brought out. Saud's genius in building a kingdom and dynasty is very evident.OTOH, the book is an undisguised PR effort for Ibn Saud. He is praised to the sky while others are dismissively caricatured. While opponents are 'fat, murderous, treacherous', Saud can go from being far sighted and wise to a simple Bedouin for whom a man's word is his contract (within the same chapter). Once you discount that, it is a rewarding read.

I'm a Saudi citizen, and there are a lot of information I just knew about. It is a very interesting book to read. However, there is a major mistake that I urge the author to revise as soon as possible. That is: Fatemah is the prophet Muhammad's daughter not his sister.

A great book for putting so many Middle East issues into focus, including historical perspectives that help one see the traditions of violence accompanied by a certain code of moral conduct. An added bonus was the added insight it provides to other countries like Britain, US, the Netherlands (all oil and geo-strategic related) in addition to the locals- Iraq, Iran, Turkey, but also the religious cultures of Wahhabism, Shiite, Suni. bedouin nomads, and the towards the end the emergence of Israel headlong into this mix. Women's rights issues receive less consideration - just enough to put things into perspective. Ibn Saud as a leader seems to be a honorable man of strong character - always forgiving his enemies but being forever vigilant and quick to react when cornered. One of the best historical treatises I have read among the popular literature with abundant footnotes. Slow to start but becomes more and more intriguing as you go. Congratulations to the author.

3.5 stars in my opinion. Lots of information, excellent research, and a thorough bibliography. However, the book reads a lot like a text book. And the book is misnamed. It covers the period from about 1870 to 2010 in the events of the development of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. About 75% of the book covers the life of its founder Ibn Saud. But its thrust is the kingdom and Saud; its not strictly a biography. Good reading if you want to get a good overview of Ibn Saud and the birth and development of Saudi Arabia.

I learned a lot about the Bedouin way of life, and I came to respect Ibn Saud in a way that I did not expect. There was somewhat more detail than I felt was necessary, but it did not interfere with the overall flow of the book. I do not understand or agree with the current way of life in Saudi Arabia (at least as it is portrayed in our media), but I now have a much better understanding of the forces, culture, and this powerful character who created it. In spite of the brutality in his story, I feel Ibn Saud was a truly great leader and an admirable man.

A host of folks ought to have read this book before making decisions involving the middle east!! Particularly G.W. Bush and his coterie that were going to make him a heroic nation-builder, not to mention Tony Blair as this is nothing short of an excellent review of Islam and its combinationa and permutations. The fact that so many acted in ignorance is no excuse for short-sighted reactions to that area of the world.

This is not an easy read, but it is very comprehensive. I have an interest in the subject, based on a job I used to have, so it filled in many blanks for me.
