Without a doubt, this is one of the best/ most thorough/most accessible histories on the origins of Christianity, charismatic Judaism, and Gnosticism. Jenkins touches on numerous pertinent subjects - topics that have largely been neglected - that are crucial for any student of Biblical history to comprehend; to include, Enochic literature, apocalyptic literature, and a thorough history of the Maccabean War.

The purpose of this book is the illuminate the 300 or so tumultuous years in Palestine prior to the common era (CE). This involves a confluence of political, cultural, philosophical, and theological issues that range from essential and basic to indescribably obscure. The "crucible era", as Jenkins calls it, forged the theological building blocks of what would become rabbinic Judaism, Christianity, and even Islam. Jenkins concentrates on both the final formation of the canonical Old Testament and a number of discarded texts, including Enoch, the Dead Sea Scrolls, and many others that were found either as archaeological artifacts or as the living canon of such sources as the Ethiopian Old Testament. Unfortunately, the book is rather academic in tone, which often makes it a slog as a read, however interesting many sections of it are.On the political front, the time is one of extraordinary violence. On the one hand, there are foreign powers seeking to dominate the region. In the beginning, there were the Ptolemies and Seleucids, both of them Hellenistic Greek Empires that arose after the death of Alexander the Great. Palestine served as a kind of buffer zone between them, changing hands many times. As they weakened, the Maccabees emerged as successful revolutionaries who established an independent Jewish state, eventually called the Hasmonean dynasty. The Hasmoneans had to war against many rival claimants to the true faith, e.g. the Samaritans, who had their own communities and city states. Finally, toward the end of the period, the Romans conquered the region, bringing their own style of oppression and influence. On the other hand, there was a civil war from within: rabbinic Judaism was in formation, pitting a traditional priestly aristocracy against popular, scholarly rivals who claimed to better understand God's intentions. Culturally, moreover, there is a great ferment of ideas, ranging from Greco-Roman philosophy and polytheism to alternative forms of monotheism in Persia, all of which impacted and were absorbed to different degrees. What emerged in the religious sphere was the development of a number of notions that were alluded to only vaguely in the Old Testament, if indeed at all. Many of them sought to address some of the issues that sprung from monotheism, e.g. how can evil exist and flourish when God was omnipotent and purely good? The answer was to elaborate conceptions of the afterlife, where the good and just would live in immortal paradise while the wicked would suffer eternal punishment. Moreover, evil was explained away by the existence of devils and demons, fallen angels and human-demon hybrids that God for inexplicable reasons allowed to live in a banished realm, Hell; identifiable angels and demons proliferated in this period. Furthermore, given the imminent dangers of death and destruction, the concept of the Apocalypse - the end fight between good and evil forces - emerged as a central concept. Finally, a messiah would be the instrument through which the righteous would be guided and then saved. Thus, Jesus appeared as one of many apocalyptic messianic prophets at the end of this period. As a result, a vast array of new groups were born, each touting some interpretation of these ideas and incorporating varying elements of foreign notions to address whatever dilemmas they deemed were needed, often in isolated communities that gave free range to fanatical devotions that they elaborated in apocalyptic detail. Here you find the early Christian sects, rabbinic Judaism, but also the Manichees, Zoroastrians, and innumerable others. Moreover, canonical texts were established while many of the older ones were revived and occasionally edited to better fit the times. As you can imagine, this is complexity itself. I found it fascinating and, as an atheist, wonder how anyone could believe that one interpretation would be correct over the others and hence eternally sacred. It is not always clear where the book is going, particularly as Jenkins felt compelled to cover all of the variations in lengthy, turgid descriptions of what various sources say. I found it hard to keep them straight, even as an amateur scholar of early Christianity and the late Classical era. I also would have liked much more coverage of the impact of Hellenistic ideas on all of this, though Jenkins alludes it to a degree. Though Jenkins is a conservative Episcopalian, I would note that the tone of the book is secular and not in any way advocating for a particular sect. The level of the book is quite advanced. With much knowledge assumed, many basic concepts are not completely explained, such as the mechanics of the Roman administration or the innovations of Neo-platonism. This makes much of the book hard going for the uninitiated, though also stimulating for the curious (and dogged).Though I am not a specialist, I believe this to be an important book. (Heck, anything that gets people interested in the Seleucids is OK by me!) I enjoyed looking at the footnotes for further source materials, always a sign that I was engaged deeply. I recommend this book as a fun intellectual adventure, however lugubrious many passages are.

This is an incredible book for any person seriously interested in religion. If you pose the question "what happened between the Hebrew scriptures and the New Testament?", I think most persons who are literate with either of these would have trouble answering that question. Philip Jenkins answers it in this book. I found his explanation of the split between Judaism and Christianity in the second century CE particularly interesting. It is in this period between the fifth century BCE and the second century CE that a huge volume of religious literature appears, most of which is not now included in the Jewish or Christian canon. In these writings, first appear Satan as a named fallen angel, numerous references to angels, Hell as described by the Middle Ages, resurrection, a concern about an afterlife, and the appearance of the Apocalypse. The book is well written, and is intended for a lay audience.

Philip Jenkins provides a panoramic and in-depth assessment of the historical trends and conditions that prevailed in the intertestamental period. This book provides good information for the armchair theologian or the working pastor who want to enhance their knowledge of this period which is often ignored or overlooked in conventional histories and biblical commentaries.

As stated by the author, this is indeed a time period I have given little time to studying and understanding. I have read about some of these religious ideas, but the author does a excellent job of creating a comprehensive picture of several cultures beyond the Roman Empire. (Which takes all the lesson times in history classes.)

A complex subject is explained in non-technical language. The author presents a well summarized picture of the development of religion from age to age.

Jenkins is an outstanding religious historian of this era.

Eye-opening. Jenkins has made a solid contribution to the developments that preceded Christianity.

Review

"In this sturdy and enlightening work, Thich Nhat Hanh explores seven key meditations... with ample grace and abounding insights. We were immensely impressed with Thich Nhat Hanh's writings on aimlessness and resting in God; impermanence and the futility of trying to live forever; and the art of letting go as a means of releasing our suffering." - Spirituality & Practice"In elegant prose, stitched with stories from his Vietnamese homeland and years in Paris, Hanh lays out wisdom from the poignant to the practical...The Art of Living offers an exit ramp from the madness of modern-day overdrive, and just might let us grasp the heaven on Earth." - Chicago Tribune

From the Back Cover

In troubled times, there is an urgency to understand ourselves and our world. We have so many questions, and they tug at us night and day, consciously and unconsciously. In this important volume, Zen master Thich Nhat Hanh—one of the most revered spiritual leaders in the world today—reveals an art of living in mindfulness that helps us answer life’s deepest questions and experience the happiness and freedom we desire.Thich Nhat Hanh presents, for the first time, seven transformative meditations that open up new perspectives on our lives, our relationships, and our interconnectedness with the world around us. Based on the last full talks before his sudden hospitalization, and drawing on intimate examples from his own life, he shows us how these seven meditations can free us to live a happy, peaceful, and active life, and face aging and dying with curiosity and joy and without fear.Containing the essence of the Buddha’s teachings and Thich Nhat Hanh’s poignant, timeless, and clarifying prose, The Art of Living provides a spiritual dimension to our lives. This is not an effort to escape life or to dwell in a place of bliss outside of this world. Instead, this path will allow us to discover where we come from and where we are going. And most of all, it will generate happiness, understanding, and love so we can live deeply in each moment of our life, right where we are.

I've read nearly every book written by Thich Nhat Hanh and have attended many talks and retreats. This book is his best yet and sums up decades of teaching and profound wisdom in the beautiful, simple and eloquent style that Thich Nhat Hanh has perfected and that makes him one of the great spiritual teachers and leaders of all time. Read it and you'll see what I mean..

World famous Buddhist monk and peace activist (he coined the phrase “engaged Buddhism”) Thich Nhat Hanh, now 91, entered a monastery in Viet Nam at age 16. During the Vietnam War he came to the United States where he taught comparative religion at Princeton and was a Buddhism lecturer at Columbia. He is fluent in French, Chinese, Sanskrit, Pali, Japanese, and English in addition to his native Vietnamese. He returned to Vietnam in 1963 where he aided his fellow monks in nonviolent peace efforts and established a university. He traveled to the United States to promote peace between North and South Vietnam and was denied reentry into the country which began a long exile. He has since established his home monastery in France and others in the U.S., Australia, Hong Kong, Thailand, Vietnam, and Germany. He has authored more than 100 books. This one, edited by his monastic students, sums up the essence of the last lectures he gave before his stroke in 2014, and these lectures sum up the essence of his teachings. He offers deep insight on what it means to be alive and what it means to die. True to his Buddhist roots with numbered lists, he offers liberation from the three “wrong views” and three major practices plus four additional practices. This small 200-page book is jam-packed with solid wisdom. You can sense this teacher’s embodiment of his teachings which gives them added power. Whether speaking, walking, doing calligraphy, engaged in social action, or dealing with a stroke, Thich Nhat Hanh has always walked the walk.

I bought a couple copies of this book to loan out to my friends and family to read. While many of Thay's books share the same fundamental practices and teachings, this one included, I felt this one was a good refresher and covered many relevant areas for people of all backgrounds. Thay's writing is beautiful, poetic, and easy to read as always. Highly recommend for those seeking to better understand how mindfulness can change your life.

I enjoy almost all of Thich Nhat Hanh's books and this one is a keeper. I know some of his material can be repetitious, but this volume is a relaxing read. Many words of wisdom and gentle guidance.

I've read Thich's small but powerful books for a long time. Using a minimal of words he sets you on a good path in this life. This book contains the essence of his knowledge in a book that was written by some followers. The last several chapters knocked me out! So crisp and clear! Our true home is in the present moment.

How did he fit so much into one book? This is a clear and concise presentation of core Buddhist psychology at the same time that it is poetic and heartfelt. Essential for students of Thich Nhat Hanh and mind blowing for everyone else.

Everyone should have at least one copy. Two is better. One to carry and one for home, or don't leave home without it.Wonderful wonderful wise and witty insights that make me feel connected to the whole wide world. Truly a "must have".Brilliant, insightful and funny. My new best friend.

An inspiring summary of the ideas, Thich That Hanh explained in his other books. This book presents his philosophy in a concise manner, If you have read any of his book, this book would be a great addition to your collection.

Lisa Tawn Bergren has written a series of lovely children's books featuring the polar bear family. Mama and Papa and Grampa Bear teach lessons of life and faith to the little bears. In Bergren's newest offering, God Gave Us Christmas, Mama Bear and Little Cub leave Papa at home with the baby cubs as they go on a trip to learn the meaning of Christmas. Mama Bear, in her wisdom, does not disillusion Little Cub about Santa, but makes sure Little Cub knows that God, not Santa, invented Christmas.Mama Bear takes Little Cub to see God. They see the northern lights, and the power of glaciers. But most importantly, they see Joseph and Mary and Jesus, and talk about the real meaning of Christmas. As Mama Bear says, "Jesus is the best present of all. . . . Jesus is a present for everyone, grumpy or happy, mean or kind. God gave us all Christmas."God Gave Us Christmas will delight fans of Bergren's bear family books. This new one features art by David Hohn, instead of Laura Bryant. He maintains the style and characters recognizably, but I tend to like Bryant's work better. Nevertheless, it's a cute story, with pretty pictures, and communicates the real meaning of Christmas in an engaging way.

A Beautiful story that includes both Santa and Jesus. My husband and I are Christians, and really want our daughter to grow up knowing the true meaning of Christmas, but we also want her to have the fun of Santa Claus; this book is really perfect for our family values. It is such a sweet story about God being everywhere and giving us wonderful gifts. I love this book, and it is going to be part of our Christmas tradition for many years.

A nice story to help children see the link between Christmas, Jesus, God and Santa. A little too much for my 2.5 year old, so more recommended for 3 and up

Such a cute book !!! I love how it talks about Santa and says he has a part, but God is What Christmas is really about. Highly recommend !

I have really struggled to find a book that had the true meaning of Christmas so clearly spelled out for my son (who is 3) WITHOUT turning around and telling him "so Christmas is not about Santa or presents or lights and decorations" in such a clear either/or Jesus vs Santa mentality. He is 3, so we wanted a way for him to be able to embrace the real meaning of Christmas AND be able to participate in other Christmas traditions like parades and lights and yes, even Santa. This is the first book I have found that BEAUTIFULLY incorporates the fun and the magic of Santa and lights and Christmas traditions right into the meaning of Jesus birth at Christmas time. No more either/or this vs/ that. Finally a way to teach kids the true meaning of the season WITHOUT making them feel guilty for their excitement over Santa and stockings as well. LOVE IT.

Very sweet book. Bought two years ago, and my 4 year old has wanted to read it twice this week at bed time (we read Christmas, Advent, Santa, etc. books during December). It helps point kids to Jesus, amidst the craziness of commercial Christmas. Santa is mentioned, but as a symbol of generosity, as St. Nicholas originally was. I have several books by this author, and am I big fan of her ability to relate to children.

This book is far too long and the concepts too complex for it's intended audience. I am an early childhood teacher with 40 years of experience, and while it appears to be a book for a preschool aged child, the contents are too complex. They started out ok, but kind of lost their way in carrying the book contents too far, trying to explain how God and Santa can exist together harmoniously for Christmas, etc. It might work for older kids conceptually, 6-8 years, but they are giving up on Santa around then anyway, and the Mama and Little Bear format is too juvenile past Kindergarten in my opinion.

Before buying this, people should know that it's full of baby-talk and misspelled words that are supposed to be cute (and apparently a lot of people like this type of thing since the reviews are mainly positive). I won't read it to my child, but everyone can make their own decision. For us, it was written in a way that was insulting to children and talked down to them. The content isn't a problem, it's just the style of writing, so this book isn't terrible, it's just not for us (at all).If you're okay with baby-talk and words that are spelled incorrectly to mimic how children talk, then you'll be okay with this book. If you find that sort of thing annoying and improper, you should avoid it.

This is a very sweet book that helps little ones understand the true meaning of Christmas. I am excited to gift this to my little one on Christmas Eve. I know he is going to love it, because he loves books in general and the illustrations of the animals are sure to make any little one smile.

I just finished reading book two in the Sun Blessed Trilogy by Carol Beth Anderson. Carol continues to impress me with her strong, consistent story telling. Book two continues the great character development of our main and supporting characters. Tullen and Tavi, grow and mature very naturally as they head into their mid-teen years. One of Carol’s great strengths as a story teller is her ability to keep her characters realistic and interesting as we watch them grow and progress like real teens do. There are ups and downs in relationships in book two, just as there is in real life as we grow into adulthood. There are also joys and sorrows that the characters are forced to deal with just like we do in our lives. The character and plot development in book two make it inevitable that small parts of the story will slow down a bit. Please don’t let that discourage you, since this makes the entire book more enjoyable throughout – especially toward the end. We also get to see some of the evil characters grow and evolve throughout the book, which is often not the case in fantasy novels. In many books the evil characters start out despicable and stay that way throughout. While Konner is reliably more and more evil, Ash and a few other Grays begin to show a bit of a conscience about the evil they are creating. Book two comes to a bang of a finish (literally) and leaves me anxious to start the final book in the series right away. If you’ve started the Sun Blessed Trilogy, trust when I say you’ve got to finish it. If you haven’t started then trust me when I say you’ll be so happy when you do!

And the adventure continues. Tavi, Sullen and their friends are plotting how to confront and defeat the Gray magicians. They relocate to the big city, having to hide out or venture out in disguise all the time while developing their plan. Then it turns out that the fellow helping them is himself a Gray magician, although possibly not in league with the rest of the Grays – IF he can be believed. Nobody is convinced of that. Will these Gold magicians, little more than children, be able to defeat a group of dedicated, experienced adults dead set on taking over the entire nation? It sounds rather daunting, when it’s put like that. Of course, some dissension in the Gray ranks doesn’t hurt. But can they? Or will they be conscripted into the Gray ranks? Or killed outright?Intriguing questions, aren’t they?

Many thanks to Carol Beth Anderson for the complimentary copy of this audio book for my honest review. Facing the Gray is the second installment of the Sun Blessed Trilogy and I very much appreciate not having to wait a year between the installments of this series. This book thickens the plot that was begun in the first novel and deepens the development of the characters maturity both personally and in life experience while driving the plot forward. One element of this series that I think Anderson shows mastery of is the depth of reflection entertained by the characters. Her language eloquently expresses the deep thinking of Tavi and her friends as they assess their personal and interpersonal decisions, passions and interactions. Anderson weaves together a historical background in which the characters participate in and address both big picture/world political elements and struggle with personal temptation to give into passions coupled with the will to identify and stand up for what is true and good. I think this is striking to me because this depth in my experience is not found in many novels that I've read for young adults and I think it's a critical component to their personal and social growth. I highly recommend this book and look forward to listening to the final installment of the trilogy.

Great second book in the series! I liked the progression of the plot and the growing maturity of the gifted youth. I really liked the inclusion of the midwives in books 1 and 2, and their special place in nurturing, teaching, bringing a reverence for human life, and imparting the knowledge that every child blesses the world with his/her uniqueness. I can't wait to read the final book in this lovely trilogy.

Facing the Gray is the second book in the Sun Blessed Trilogy by Carol Beth Anderson. I continue to enjoy the story, but I began to feel like the story was dragging. It has amazing moments that grabbed my emotions. In the beginning, I was frequently crying. On one page I'd be sad with Tavi, and then soon after I'd be furious with her. I found her immature and impulsive behaviors frustrating at times. Then I would remember that she is sixteen dealing with very serious situations. In the last half of the book, I would be reading and the suspense would be so much that I had to put the book down. Of course, I quickly picked it back up to find out what happened. The book ends leaving the reader with anticipation of how the conflict will be resolved in the final book. This book is a Young Adult book but is appropriate for pre-teens to adults. I recommend reading this series, just be aware that there may be some slow pages to wade through. I give this book three stars, while the trilogy remains four stars in my mind.

*I received a digital ARC copy from the author for review. This does not affect my review. This review is voluntary.*Here we are, back where I started a while back. The shock at the beginning was almost enough to turn me off this series before I even started...But I'm so glad I kept reading! The events in the beginning of this one now make sense, and it really does serve a purpose, so I'm happy. As the second book in a series, I'm not to say too much, since this one continues where the first book left off. Tavi and the Golds (her friends) have gotten themselves tangled up with the Grays (a band of mostly older magics users with a corrupted form of magic.) This one has a little more action and the characters have to make some difficult decisions.

Very helpful information, clearly and simply presented with no filler. Straightforward and intelligently written this is a no nonsense book that packs a lot of value into the package. I find myself reading and re-reading, highlighting text and copying it to notes to remind myself and help me come up with a plan. Highly recommended.

This book set has been very informative and was a rather interesting set to read and will be extremely helpful when it comes to the point of getting my own book published and I will definitely be referring back to it.

Very helpful and informative set of books on how to self publish!

This short review is targeted on "The 30 Day Book Launch", which is unrealistic and without trying to sound mean, delusional. I think anybody who tries to follow the week-by-week as stated will either fail or burn-out. Each week is broken down into four themes: Editing, Building your ebook, Publishing and Marketing. And each week is filled to the brim with tasks to be handled. Which means while you are scrambling to revise your manuscript, you are also researching and contacting people to help you fix any structural inconsistencies with your book, but you are building and polishing your author platform and social media presence. What got me was that she (the author) wants you to revise your story in a week! Seriously? Now if you have a novella or a couple of short stories, you might be able to revise in a week, heck maybe even a few days, however, if you've written a novel do you honestly believe you can revise your novel in a week while to tackle all the other tasks prescribed by the author such as researching and creating marketing promotions, outreach to social media and polishing your website? Writing is hard. Revising/ rewriting is harder. The overall book (The 30 Day Book Launch Plan) is good and has some valuable pieces of information which I think will benefit any writer who wants to self-publish, however, it would wise to take that information and work at a pace that you can handle. Spend a few days researching and contacting editors, spend a week or two finding and creating online relationships with Beta's, take as much time as you need to revise your book. Try to remember that good things take time.

I didn't dislike anything. A little confusing at first, BUT I really got into the characters and story line. I will not go into detail. Hate that. Suffice it to say I have read four of the series and have the next preordered. Tom write a great book and I have read other books of his also.

I've been reading Abrahams's work for a while now and I enjoyed this book very much. Good pacing, characterization, and details. While apocalyptic novels might not be everyone's cup of tea, I think Tom puts a unique spin on the' end of the world' with his Alt series. I started book 2 Lit already and was pleased to meet the same characters in an entirely new situation. Clever and exciting -- a great read.

I'm going to directly quote Abrahams here because I wanted to point out the exact thing that he's hoping to accomplish with the Alt Apocalypse series:"It explores survival under the most extreme circumstances, but with a twist (and no cliff-hangers). This series, which can be read in any order, features the same core characters in each complete story. But every book dunks them into a new, alternate apocalypse; a nuclear holocaust, an earthquake, a flood, a wildfire, a hurricane, a plague, and even zombies. " So there you have it - he's going to re-use the cast and characters throwing them into different situations. I love the idea behind this because it will show you that some people are geared to survive one apocalyptic event but not another. I think that this is a unique take on the PA genre and I can't wait to read the other stories he's crafting. I don't normally stop to highlight a quote in a book while listening to the audio unless it's really quotable or something that stuck out to me. I ended up stopping while reading Ash to highlight four times. One of them was: “this is LA. There are as many hills as there are douchebags.” “Probably more hills,” added Jesse. “A lot of those douchebags are dead.” - I died when reading this line. I don't know why it felt so perfect in this book - definitely my kind of humor. I'm sure that the ven diagram of pop-punk listeners and post-apocalyptic readers isn't very big but I couldn't get a specific song out of my head the entire time I was reading Ash. Grey by Yellowcard basically the chorus is "It's all gone grey..." and the way that Abrahams wrote Ash - this fits pretty darn well. So, to quote him again, Ash tells the story of "four college friends, an ex-con, a lonely fry cook, and a secretive group of prepared civilians as they each battle to survive in southern California after a series of nuclear attacks." each one of these groups or single people brought a different side to this story. I think I liked the secretive group and the college kids the most. They were totally different but had me totally enthralled.Overall, Ash is something that I don't get to write and mean too often. An original post-apocalyptic story. Sure, some of the things in it you can find in other books but I'm looking at the series as a whole. This is something that no one that I know of has done in this genre and I'm excited for things to come. The only reason I considered leaving a less than 5 review was that I have to wait too long for the next book!

I always enjoy a good post apocalyptic book. This was an easy read but I had a little trouble keeping track of the characters. I did enjoy each set of characters path in the storyline. It's always interesting to see how people will react to a disaster and I did see 3 different kinds of reactions from the 3 different groups of people.I may try another of the series but, not being a zombie fan, will avoid that one.

Having grown up in LA, but long since moved away, I appreciated the realism Tom's story telling brought to this book, especially since he's from Houston! Mark of a good author! Anyway, this is a page turner, very well done.

Really enjoyed this story and wish the book were longer. Characters were well defined and it was very easy to get into them. Several edge-of-your-seat situations and a solid conclusion that sets up follow-on stories. Just enough violence included and also an excellent description of post nuclear war. I definitely recommend this book.

Wow! Ash delivers what Abraham’s promised and more. Surviving a nuclear bomb isn’t for the faint of heart, and our hero shows great resiliencey. A great read from a great author. I’ve ore ordered Lit, the next book in the series, and can’t wait for it to be downloaded on my Kindle!

Great book - shabby printing. I bought the paperback version but both my husband and I had problems reading this due to the paper being tinted and the print on the small size. I ended up buying the Kindle version in addition for reading comfort,Don't know exactly what I will do for the next book. Hate to double spend but don't want eyestrain either. Love all Tom' books though.

First I bought the 'Dinos Don't Hit' book to help my 1 1/2 yr old son understand he shouldn't hit us - along with some other no-hitting books. He responded incredibly to only this one though and loved hugging us at the end of the story. On the back it advertises the rest of the series and my son started begging for the 'Dinos Don't Bite' book from the picture. It came in today and he was so thrilled we could read it. Definitely 5 stars from my toddler. Very cute and simple books!

We've had a lot of success having our little biter carry around a stuffed animal to chomp if he gets the urge. It was unfortunate when this book arrived and said, "DON'T BITE YOUR TOYS" - so we skip that page. The kid likes it enough but has never selected it to read like he has with the Yo Gabba Gabba book on biting.

I absolutely love the entire series of Dino’s don’t. As my toddler experienced different stages of behavior that was unfavorable like hitting/biting, we’d read these books at bedtime and when she exhibited the behavior again I’d say “Dino’s don’t bite friends” and she’d repeat it back. It really helped address those behaviors and ultimately put an end to them without punishing her for “bad” behavior. Highly recommend these books as a tool to teach your child.

My 23 month old was asked to leave daycare for biting consistently for a week. We bought this book and “Don’t bite your friends.” A week later, mid tantrum, I was almost bitten. She chomped on a towel instead and I said, “little dino don’t bite!” I could see the light bulb come on. She let the towel go and hasn’t bitten since. She loves the book and will read it to us sometimes! Four months later, we are still bite free.

This is one of a few Michael Dahl books I previewed on kindle unlimited and then decided to buy. While I agree with another reviewer that "Teeth are not for Biting" by Verdick is a great book for general biting, there are a few things I actually really like about this book and I think gives it considerable value in our present circumstances. For our son, who has Autism and a Sensory Processing Disorder, among other things, his most common target for biting is rarely people. He's only once tried to take a chomp out of the fabulous Miss W, who comes over here and plays with us a few days a week. He's a couple of times tried to take a chomp out of his super cool music therapist, and maybe once every week or two on average he'll try to take a chomp on me. And the occasional attempt towards a person is really an emergence we're seeing after a dental procedure, albeit one we don't want to see become a habit. No, his primary target for all chewing and "biting" if you will is stuff. My cookbooks. His toys. His books. Pencils. Table corners. Foam mats. Actually, if it exists at this point, he's willing to try and stick it in his mouth, including Catzilla's tail. About the only favorable thing I can really say about Catzilla at this point (other then he brings insane amounts of joy to my daughter) is that he definitely seems to recognize that there's something special about our little man, and no matter how many times he tries to chew on his tale, Catzilla never, ever reacts to it. And we all know in this house Catzilla's one to react to things he doesn't like or approve of. Boy do we know that...So this book mentions being careful what you bite, and discourages biting typical toys, chairs, shoes, and mom. I think it's great that it discourages both people and things, with the greater balance being on the "items" because that's mostly what he does try to chew on. Neither type is good, but the chewing on things can actually pose a considerable safety risk. Scissors can never be left out. Nor can glues, chemicals, anything of the sort. He's literal enough we may need a separate story on those types of things, he may not generalize to those, but I think this book is a good enough place to start. My main criticism is that it only gives food substitutes as appropriate for biting, and not teethers, chewy toys, gum, straws, etc. The thing is, I just think food should be eaten only when a person is hungry, but there are many times kiddos have reasons for biting, like teething or sensory issues, that have nothing to do with hunger, And I think part of appropriate management for those behaviors is to recognize that and give them non-food subs. I think encouraging eating when one isn't actually hungry doesn't lead to good habits down the road, like emotional eating, which can become a very slippery slope indeed from the medical perspective. So for me, I combine this with other books, which don't really address that there are some non-people items that aren't ok to chew on, paired with continual replacement of whatever he's trying to chew on with an appropriate item, etc. We've been working on this particular challenge for a while now, so I don't expect this book is going to solve all of our problems, but I think it's a very nice reinforcement story.I would also say typically best for a developmentally normal 18 month to 2 years of age. The sentence structure is very simple, which I like for our son. Who can understand at a higher level then that, but has limited patience for books, especially if they target things he doesn't see the need to work on so it's great to get in there, get the message out quick, and be done with it. We're able to successfully get him through these because of it.

Love these books and I'm sure we have almost every one of them by now. These are easy for my daughter to follow along with and learn from. Started reading these to my daughter when she started biting at about a year and she's been picking different books from this series for the past 8 months when it's story time.

Its ok...a little loo basic for my 2 year old. He has a hard time with the biting thing and I hoped this would help. He doesnt really care for the book which is disappointing.

My daughter really likes the book and asks to read it every day, she's almost 2. I think it has cut down on her biting, though she still occasionally bites me or her sister.
