A serious book on a serious matter in the Great Lakes region and very informative. It's not a given that there is enough water folks!

(January 16, 2018) I did something this past Sunday and Monday I’ve never done before: I read an entire 315-page book: Paul Sahre’s Two-Dimensional Man. Up to now, the only book I had read faster was Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone. Sahre has not just elevated my reading speed and comprehension level, he has dared me to write a book.Now, while true this book features numerous images, I own many books with more images that have sat on my shelf unopened for decades. What compelled me through this book was its resonance to me, personally. Its appeal, in my opinion, is that it is not about design at all. It is about one man’s life. The book is funny, frank, and self-effacing. It reads like the author is narrating the story rather than describing it — an inaudible audible book. The author’s restraint, as in his design work, distinguishes it. As a writer (never an author), I read this constantly thinking, “I wish I could write like this.”Whether he accepts it or not, Paul Sahre is esteemed for the multiplicity of his talents. He is among the few I know in our chummy (and often incestuous) world of communication arts whose achievements have made him more approachable rather than less; whose ego has never outgrown his accomplishments. He is, in short, far more than what we have ever known, understood, or read about him—and this book proves it. As good as Sahre is at “design,” I think he is a better writer. He approaches each essay with the kind of courage that writing coaches and editors discourage. It is fortunate that his mentor from Kent State University, j.Charles Walker, did not impose on his students a Division of Writing Policy Statement, too.I have long wondered what about my life might deserve the leisure reading time of others. Sahre reminds us that any life is interesting if we live long enough and open our minds wide enough to put it into perspective. To compose the many unrelated experiences and memories of our lives into one composition—then share it —is worthy of someone’s attention, if only our mother’s. Of the house Sahre’s parents acquired and in which the author spent much of his youth, he writes, “Hundreds of identical ranch-style houses, each covered with identical metal siding, sat at the end of identical driveways with identical manicured lawns.”The repetition of the word identical (with photo to demonstrate its identical-ness) appears on page 36. By this time, we already know there is nothing ordinary about the lives inside this house: youngest brother, Kenny, becomes Angus, runs away to the circus and dies of injuries suffered in a fall inside that same house some 30 years later; eldest brother Greg is rendered deaf and developmentally impaired due to a prenatal infection that impacts the family for two generations; as a boy, Sahre’s father watched from the bleachers of Yankee Stadium as Lou Gehrig cried.He began seeing the leaves of trees in third grade the moment he puts on his first pair of eyeglasses: “I couldn’t believe how much detail there was in the world…There was complexity everywhere. Suddenly clouds had finite edges. I could read distant signs, and I could see that there were planes way, way up there. It was fall…I kept telling my mom, ‘I can see the leaves in the trees.’” A lifetime later, he reveals what it means to truly “see,” finding detail in the blurry images of the many thousand snapshots in the boxes of his memory, then composing them into a single, vital, resonate narrative that moves you.Thank you, Mr. Sahre for opening a window into your life. It is the normalcy that invites us in. But it is the gentle reminders inside that remind us of the courage required to live our truth. You have convinced me, a writer, that what may appear from the curb as banal and unremarkable, is, upon closer inspection, wonder and horror, triumph and disaster, love and loss— a life of countless intersections with lives of countless others that makes a story worth sharing. If I ever become an author, I will credit you with giving me the courage to admit I was probably gay the moment I posed for a 1973 Christmas photo wearing matching belt, hat, and boots. Paul Sahre is one of my biggest design inspirations, so needless to say, I've really been looking forward to the release of Two-Dimensional Man. With his history of book design, it was probably inevitable that he would eventually get around to releasing something of his own and it doesn’t disappoint. The designer monograph is sort of right-of-passage for designers that have reached a certain level of acclaim, we’re all familiar with the glossy, beautifully photographed pictures of envy inducing work, the advice on how you too can reach such levels of brilliance and of course, the endorsements of equally acclaimed design contemporaries. Trust Paul to turn all of this on its head by instead picture producing a thoughtful and even may I say, humble memoir on how his life has informed his design work and how his design work has influenced his life. It's a warts and all examination of pushing the craft of design to where he personally wants it to be. We look at great design work and admire and are envious of the finished product, without realising the frustration and effort that goes into getting it there. I had the pleasure of visiting and talking to Paul a few years ago in his studio, the biggest revelation for me was when he was discussing some work he was doing for a small theatre company (it was pro-bono or for not much money) and he was agonising over the troubles he was having producing something that the client was happy with. The two things that struck me were, first, this is Paul Sahre, one of the most recognised and celebrated graphic designers around and he's worried about what some small theatre company thinks about his work, work that he is doing fore none or very little money? And second, with all the big name clients he has worked for, he is still as passionate about this little job as any other project he had worked on. This was a revelation to me at the time and is at the heart of what you will get out of this book - the passion and frustrations of working as a graphic designer, sometimes you hit it out of the park, but often times you will strike out. Your mileage may vary depending on persistence. This is no better demonstrated than the chapter on dealing with the band Steely Dan on an album cover project. All designers will be familiar with the scenario as he relates it, and if it's any consolation to Paul, I think most of us would feel like we experienced the book chapter title he uses if we had purchased the album in question. It’s not all dealing with clueless clients though. The book goes a long way in helping to explain why graphic designers do what they do, why we continue at it even though 99% of the population has very little grasp of what in fact it is that we do. I don't think many of us ever imagined ourselves, say at the age of six, imagining a future in the productive world of graphic design. We mostly fell into it because we liked to draw and continued doing it because we got praised for it, or were obsessive enough that we kept on doing it when our peers had given it up for other pre-adolescent pursuits. We leave school and have to become adults, so we look for some way to channel that six year old kid drawing x-wing fighters, while lying on their bedroom floor, and suddenly, there you are as an adult, dressed in black, drinking lattes and calling yourself a graphic designer. That said, don't be scared off from this book if you're craving pictures of the work, that's there too and then some - but if you like your design with a little bit of substance behind it, this is definitely the book you need in your life, you might even learn something (spoiler: Pauls’ first name is actually Dwayne) . Remarkably, once you’ve finished reading it, you may also find that a design book can bring a tear to the eye of the most jaded creative professional!

Paul's book proves unequivocably that he is a genius. He is as great a writer as he is a designer, and that is saying a lot. Two-Dimensional Man is a life-affirming journey through love, heartbreak, hard work, creativity and what it really means to design a meaningful existence.

If I could give this 0 stars I would. The quality is horrendous. The book uses poor quality Microsoft Word art and appears like it was an elementary school project gone wrong. Several other photos are pixelated and unprofessional.I could print reviews from the internet and staple them together for a more comprehensive, detailed, and orienting collection. There is no map. There is no price comparison other than an arbitrary rating system. Of the 60 small pages, 12 are nonsubstantive. Hans Ulrich Obrist is a central figure in contemporary curating and here he proves his commitment to it with a series of references to important curating events of the past and current century.For someone with an interest in curating I can say this is a great book to start increasing your knowledge in the subject and because it is essentially composed of interviews it is very easy to read.

I couldn't resist the title "Curatorspeak" for this review as in fact it is "curatorspeak" in the way that curators talk together. Well, Hans Ulrich Obrist have his model for interviewing people, a kind of laidback easy to read informal conversation. Most of the time it works great and the book gives great insight into the different curatorial approaches that his collegues and predecessors have towards exhibition-making. Sometimes, however, the informality of the conversation don't really give you a in depth-perpsective of what the curator he talks to actually thinks about exhibition-making. It could of course be that he doesn't have very deep thoughts on the subject, and maybe he is (bacause it is mainy men) more working from intuitien and tacit knowledge. However, all in all it is a great introduction to curators who have been signinficant contributors to the development of exhibition-making since WW2 and in that respect it fulfills the title "A brief history of curating".

While the book hits at a variety of current topics and seems to be well-intended, it doesn't really work very well. As noted, the story concerns a young mixed race inner city child found abandoned by his crack addicted mother and put into the system, only to be placed in the home of a wealthy and very politically connected judge, who has decided to become a guardian years after losing his own young son in an auto accident and still heavily struggling with his grief. He discovers the young boy is intelligent, good hearted and athletically gifted. He quickly becomes emotionally attached, then obsessed and then proceeds to use every available friend and resource to basically lie, cheat and steal the boy into his permanent custody by any means necessary. And after adopting him, he spends the rest of the book attempting to mold him into the man he hoped his biological son would be and create the future he wanted for him as well.It might have worked but the characters are all two dimensional and largely stereotyped. We don't really know what most of the characters are actually thinking or who they really are. We spend most of the first part of book hearing from the judge but we learn very little that would round him out into a real human being. And the plot is overly predictable, proceeding almost entirely as expected towards the inevitable big reveal when the truth will out. The only real question is just how bad the damage will be. In the end, it all resembles a made for TV movie.

I have paid over $15.00 for some books on my Kindle, being so disappointed in them, I never finished most of them. Then I find this book" Everybody's Son" on daily deals at a low cost. This is one of the best, if not "the best" books I have read.I had never heard of this author before, but will research and order every book he has written!

Having read all of Thrity Umrigar's novels, I must say that this is my favorite. Through the character of Anton, Umrigar examines the ultimate price of the moral decisions we make in our lives. I love how she integrates such timely issues of race, money, white privilege, and politics into her story. This novel made me wish I was still teaching literature at the university, because I would love to discuss these contemporary ideas with my students. Everybody's Son is a powerful and engaging novel. The female characters are indecipherable with little detail or description given. The final chapters drone on and on as Anton is muddled in his indecision. Ending left me confused and undecided. Up in the air are his relationships with his adopted father , mother, and Katherine..

David and Delores know all too well the pain of losing a son and when the opportunity presents itself to raise Anton they jump at the chance. It is that decision that will create all kinds of craziness in their lives. Do you take a child out of a bad situation when you know that you can better their lives? Or do you leave them with the mother they love so much? Great story you'll have to read it for yourself to find out what happened.

I am giving this book four stars because it was an emotional and absorbing read with an excellent premise. There were times I could not put it down, which is what I expect from a good book. I must admit, however, that the second half of the book - as the perspective changes from father to son, was less engaging. Ms. Umrigar seemed compelled to throw in so much unnecessary social commentary through the main character, it seemed almost Forest Gump-like and forced. As a whole I did enjoy Everybody's Son, but by the end of the book the story had morphed into something different than the book I started reading, and maybe not as satisfying.

The beginning chapters are a bit simply written for Mz. Umrigar-- I literally double checked to see if I was reading one of her novels. But that's just setting the stage. This is a good one, full of her usual depth, perception and compassion. The ending is her typical open ended one too (which I have come to appreciate) . It leaves you to imagine the outcome, which you can easily do because the characters are so real and well developed that you can imagine for yourself how it might go. We can identify with all sides of this drama, and all the players are likeable and have their charm. But no one is innocent, and no one is a villain, though great wrongs have been suffered. But Such is life. There are no pat answers for social and racial problems. In fact it is not within man's ability to resolve even one of mankinds of our problems. Love Love Love Mz. Umrigar's writing.

Umrigar's latest novel is riveting--couldn't put it down! The characters were so very well drawn, as I was reading I wondered what actors would play the roles, if the novel ever went to screenplay. A fine novel which examines the role of privilege and family. Brava, Thrity!

I really enjoyed this book on happiness. The big take-away for me is that you don't have to go far to find happiness, happiness is a choice and you can make happiness a habit.Happiness is a topic that many people write about but I don't think I've read it in such a practical, easy to understand and approachable way. The author doesn't focus on psychology, spirituality, philosophy but simple practices and habits you can apply to your life. He takes it out of this abstract/theoretical concept and makes happiness real and concrete which I appreciated.The gift of this book is helping one realize that happiness can be worked on everyday. You don't have to be the Dalai Lama to find happiness. Jem gives you a dozen ideas or more on exactly what you can do to cultivate happiness daily. A good read for anyone wanting practical steps to daily happiness. The blessing practice, 4 gems of joy and the tips on creating a happiness environment resonated with me.

This book is easy to read and practical, I highly recommend it. It contains great advice on how to be happy in this day and age. Choosing happiness is more difficult in these times as we are bombarded with stress, noise, pollution, bright lighting, etc. Jem outlines exactly the steps to take towards a more happy and fulfilling life. I would recommend this book to anyone who is wanting more happiness. Happiness is a choice and Jam outlines how to make those choices.

I thought this was going to be just another blah blah blah self-growth book full of rehashed ideas. But it's not. Very helpful compilation of ideas, examples, reminders and tips for creating a better quality of life through happiness. Nicely done.

It's been my experience with reading a lot of self-help books over 5 decades that the quality varies. Some are useful, some not so much. The enthusiasm in CHOOSING HAPPIER I found contagious. Reading this guide really cheered me up and provoked thought. The author focuses on the individual's ability to choose how we perceive events in our life. Really, who would choose to be depressed or sad or feel down? Well, many of us do; but the point here is that we can "choose" to be happier, to experience life as a positive journey. Very encouraging book.

Wow. Just, wow. In short, this is a great read for anyone who wishes to understand the context and culture surrounding the greater African independence movements of the last century.To be honest, I wasn't too keen on this book at first. I thought it was cumbersome and almost redundant. The more I read, however, I realized that the style which Falola writes is something to be savored. Too often do we read books simply to get to the next word, sentence, page, chapter. Sorry for the corny cliche, but I think it applies here: The whole is greater than the sum of its parts when it comes to this book.At first, the only parts of the book I enjoyed were the periodical African idioms and sayings. When I finally reached a point to where I could examine the totality of the message, I realized that interspersed in these memoirs is a much deeper understanding of Africa during a time of abrupt transition from a traditional culture to a foreign/forced modern one.If at first you start to lose interest, keep reading. It's definitely worth it.

I have just started to read it and I tell you that the dish of text and its context is a brother sweeter than honey, so it was worth my money's worth.

Growing up in Nigeria in the years around independence provides good material for a personal memoir. These must have been extraordinary times, full of hope and expectation for the emerging new country. For a growing teenager though, the issues were closer to home. Falola, well known scholar of African history, has used his personal experiences to create a rich innovative kind of memoir that combines his growing up during that time with events in his community and the country as a whole. The resulting book gives the reader vivid insight into a complex society with its intricate traditions, in particular those of the Yoruba culture. Falola writes an easy accessible style, often addressing the reader directly. He demonstrates his narrative skill and an ability to impart local events with gracefulness and humour. He demonstrates how the use of proverbs, idioms and traditional imagery has remained part of everyday discourse by interweaving sayings into his narrative. "A proverb is regarded as the 'horse' that carries words to a different level, investing them with meanings...".Falola's account suggests that he was already at the age of 10 a curious youngster and an astute observer of people, relationships and events. His early fascination with trains led him to experiences beyond his age level that were to influence his standing in his family and community. After an unplanned train ride and its aftermath, that created upheaval in the family, he was transplanted to another branch of his family in a more rural sector of Ibadan, the city-state in Nigeria's south-western region. Not having taken notice of the hierarchical structure of his polygamous family, he realized only then which of his "mothers" is his birth mother. There he also learned to connect with the rich traditions of the local people who have maintained much closer links to their past than those in the urban centre. For example, children are given an additional name by the family, a praise name (oriki). This name should establish a link to a real or imaginary hero of the past. Such names should enhance the young person's deep character and his ambition to emulate the past bearer. Like a young detective he tracks an old woman, different from any he had seen in the neighbourhood. When he is finally confronted by her, the outcomes are an important lesson for his life and future. These early influences shape his thinking into his adult life.While the chapters stand as independent stories or essays, they flow together easily as a portrait of a person in his time and place. He merges the memories of his childhood with his comprehension of circumstances as an adult. Understanding of his roots and the culture instilled in him led him to study the cultural traditions of the Yoruba people and the history of the land. His reflections on how the two religions, Islam and Christianity managed to co-exist with the rich African traditions are as pertinent today as they were during the sixties. So is his criticism of the trend among the younger generation to denigrate their own culture in the face of western influences. [Friederike Knabe]

This book is arguably the greatest book I've read in a long time. It left me feeling proud to be a Yoruba, African and black. Sometimes I wished I was from Ibadan. Yes. that's how much I was intrigued by this book. lol.It wasn't all rosy, though, because Professor Falola touches on some sensitive topics about how traditional life changed for the worse with modernisation. that left me kind of sad. Another thing is, it left me looking back at my childhood in 90's with emotional nostalgia.But his encounters with Iya Lekuloja has to be the highlight of this book. And I think this story, this memoir is not complete. Mr. Falola owes us more.Lastly, I want to see more Africans of that generation write memoirs like this.
