I really enjoyed this book on happiness. The big take-away for me is that you don't have to go far to find happiness, happiness is a choice and you can make happiness a habit.Happiness is a topic that many people write about but I don't think I've read it in such a practical, easy to understand and approachable way. The author doesn't focus on psychology, spirituality, philosophy but simple practices and habits you can apply to your life. He takes it out of this abstract/theoretical concept and makes happiness real and concrete which I appreciated.The gift of this book is helping one realize that happiness can be worked on everyday. You don't have to be the Dalai Lama to find happiness. Jem gives you a dozen ideas or more on exactly what you can do to cultivate happiness daily. A good read for anyone wanting practical steps to daily happiness. The blessing practice, 4 gems of joy and the tips on creating a happiness environment resonated with me.

This book is easy to read and practical, I highly recommend it. It contains great advice on how to be happy in this day and age. Choosing happiness is more difficult in these times as we are bombarded with stress, noise, pollution, bright lighting, etc. Jem outlines exactly the steps to take towards a more happy and fulfilling life. I would recommend this book to anyone who is wanting more happiness. Happiness is a choice and Jam outlines how to make those choices.

I thought this was going to be just another blah blah blah self-growth book full of rehashed ideas. But it's not. Very helpful compilation of ideas, examples, reminders and tips for creating a better quality of life through happiness. Nicely done.

It's been my experience with reading a lot of self-help books over 5 decades that the quality varies. Some are useful, some not so much. The enthusiasm in CHOOSING HAPPIER I found contagious. Reading this guide really cheered me up and provoked thought. The author focuses on the individual's ability to choose how we perceive events in our life. Really, who would choose to be depressed or sad or feel down? Well, many of us do; but the point here is that we can "choose" to be happier, to experience life as a positive journey. Very encouraging book.

Wow. Just, wow. In short, this is a great read for anyone who wishes to understand the context and culture surrounding the greater African independence movements of the last century.To be honest, I wasn't too keen on this book at first. I thought it was cumbersome and almost redundant. The more I read, however, I realized that the style which Falola writes is something to be savored. Too often do we read books simply to get to the next word, sentence, page, chapter. Sorry for the corny cliche, but I think it applies here: The whole is greater than the sum of its parts when it comes to this book.At first, the only parts of the book I enjoyed were the periodical African idioms and sayings. When I finally reached a point to where I could examine the totality of the message, I realized that interspersed in these memoirs is a much deeper understanding of Africa during a time of abrupt transition from a traditional culture to a foreign/forced modern one.If at first you start to lose interest, keep reading. It's definitely worth it.

I have just started to read it and I tell you that the dish of text and its context is a brother sweeter than honey, so it was worth my money's worth.

Growing up in Nigeria in the years around independence provides good material for a personal memoir. These must have been extraordinary times, full of hope and expectation for the emerging new country. For a growing teenager though, the issues were closer to home. Falola, well known scholar of African history, has used his personal experiences to create a rich innovative kind of memoir that combines his growing up during that time with events in his community and the country as a whole. The resulting book gives the reader vivid insight into a complex society with its intricate traditions, in particular those of the Yoruba culture. Falola writes an easy accessible style, often addressing the reader directly. He demonstrates his narrative skill and an ability to impart local events with gracefulness and humour. He demonstrates how the use of proverbs, idioms and traditional imagery has remained part of everyday discourse by interweaving sayings into his narrative. "A proverb is regarded as the 'horse' that carries words to a different level, investing them with meanings...".Falola's account suggests that he was already at the age of 10 a curious youngster and an astute observer of people, relationships and events. His early fascination with trains led him to experiences beyond his age level that were to influence his standing in his family and community. After an unplanned train ride and its aftermath, that created upheaval in the family, he was transplanted to another branch of his family in a more rural sector of Ibadan, the city-state in Nigeria's south-western region. Not having taken notice of the hierarchical structure of his polygamous family, he realized only then which of his "mothers" is his birth mother. There he also learned to connect with the rich traditions of the local people who have maintained much closer links to their past than those in the urban centre. For example, children are given an additional name by the family, a praise name (oriki). This name should establish a link to a real or imaginary hero of the past. Such names should enhance the young person's deep character and his ambition to emulate the past bearer. Like a young detective he tracks an old woman, different from any he had seen in the neighbourhood. When he is finally confronted by her, the outcomes are an important lesson for his life and future. These early influences shape his thinking into his adult life.While the chapters stand as independent stories or essays, they flow together easily as a portrait of a person in his time and place. He merges the memories of his childhood with his comprehension of circumstances as an adult. Understanding of his roots and the culture instilled in him led him to study the cultural traditions of the Yoruba people and the history of the land. His reflections on how the two religions, Islam and Christianity managed to co-exist with the rich African traditions are as pertinent today as they were during the sixties. So is his criticism of the trend among the younger generation to denigrate their own culture in the face of western influences. [Friederike Knabe]

This book is arguably the greatest book I've read in a long time. It left me feeling proud to be a Yoruba, African and black. Sometimes I wished I was from Ibadan. Yes. that's how much I was intrigued by this book. lol.It wasn't all rosy, though, because Professor Falola touches on some sensitive topics about how traditional life changed for the worse with modernisation. that left me kind of sad. Another thing is, it left me looking back at my childhood in 90's with emotional nostalgia.But his encounters with Iya Lekuloja has to be the highlight of this book. And I think this story, this memoir is not complete. Mr. Falola owes us more.Lastly, I want to see more Africans of that generation write memoirs like this.

Watching the news, it is pretty easy to form harsh judgments of those who live a gang life. I'm not saying this book will make you sympathetic to gangs, but it will give you real insight as to how a gang member is created. Sexually and violently graphic, but riveting. I have read several autobiographies by involved and former gang members, and this is the most well-written, on top of being very detailed and honest. Horrifying and heartbreaking. Read all three of his books!

I'm not giving this book 5 stars because of the writing, but because the events were so eye-opening. As a middle school teacher in the Chicago area, Sanchez's story reminded me of how much kids are affected by the neglect and abuse of their parents. Sanchez's absences from school made me sick with worry about some of my own students who miss a lot of school.I couldn't believe what a terrible life Sanchez had before he even started going to school. It's unfortunate that his mother not only allowed abuse to happen to her child, but also participated in it. At the end, Sanchez says he blames his mother, and I completely agree with him.Throughout the retelling of the experiences Sanchez had as a gang member of the Latin Kings, I felt really conflicted. I rooted for him because I knew he has such a hard life and was doing what he needed to do to survive, but I was also sick to my stomach with how many people he killed and the way he disrespected and abused women. I kept checking myself by reminding myself that he was a teenager throughout the telling of this story and that he does reflect and say that drugs and alcohol made him "brave" and that he now understands his actions were wrong.I also think about how Sanchez CHOSE to get out, even if it took him six years. That's a really hard thing to do, and I think that takes courage. Throughout his whole retelling of his time as a Latin King, I was amazed at how long Sanchez survived and after finishing the book, I still don't completely understand gang life.While the content of his story is wildly inappropriate for Middle and high school students, unfortunately, those are the kids that need to read it to truly understand the lifestyle of a gang member, and I have nothing but respect for Sanchez for telling his story to help save someone else.Given Sanchez's background, I didn't expect great writing; however, I do think more sophisticated writing would enhance the emotional effects of his story. Of course I was sad about what happens, but despite all the tragedy in the story, I didn't cry at all or ever come close, and I feel like maybe I should have.

I found this book completely by accident. I was searching for "My Reviews" and this along with a thousand other books and gadgets popped up. I saw this (not sure why it came up on a search of "My Reviews"), and it sounded interesting so I ordered a sample. The sample is all it took - I didn't hesitate to order the book, and immediately ordered his next book (Once a King Always a King) when I finished this one. His third book will be next (Lady Q).Sanchez's story telling is brilliant - a clean, crisp, and remarkably detailed history of the events of a hardcore gang banger whose life revolved around alcohol, drugs, violence, and sex. Although there is plenty of abuse, it's not a "woe is me" tale of abuse or how the system beat him down. He doesn't glamorize the lifestyle. It's simply a tragic story of a kid who didn't know another life but somehow found a way out. It reminded me, "There but for the grace of God go I."I literally couldn't stop reading this book - I read it walking to work, eating lunch, and every spare second of the day.

As an abused young boy Lil Loco (which was his gang name) was just looking for love and support. He was looking for a place where he wouldn't be abused or mistreated. In return though he mistreated multiple women, became involved in crimes and swore his loyalty to the Latin Kings. Reymundo gives an open and honest look into life in a gang, the situations that he finds himself in are heartbreaking at times and make you angry at others. I have read this book several times and I am sure I will read it more.

Although Reyes presents a more violent and crude picture of gang life than Always Running and Down These Mean Streets, I appreciate his honesty. His story is sad and true for many young Latino men and women growing up in these neighborhoods. It is a devastatingly accurate portrayal of how we as a society and "the system" continue to disproportionately fail our minority youth. Accounts like these are a must read for everyone regardless of race, socio economic status, gender, religion etc. we should all know what our role is in putting a stop to racism in our communities and fighting for equality for all. No child should ever be allowed to grow up in these conditions, much less to become killers and/or drug addicts.Also Highly recommend, 13th documentary on Netflix

It was an okay book. Very brutal, but then he had a brutal life and came from an abusive household. It was interesting that he always saw himself as a coward. He's a serial rapist and he killed quite a few people, how is it that he's still a free man?. Maybe its in his next book. This book also reads like a book of exploints, not a book to say don't join a gang. On the contrary the way he tells it Latin Kings offer security, identity, status, stability, financial help etc. he keeps saying the bosses are the only ones profiting blah blah and they don't help blah blah and then directly contradicts what he said.

Being someone who thought themselves how to pray at the age of 18, I always questioned whether I was doing it right. I would see people at the mosque that prayed a little differently than me. So I decided to get this book. By the way I'm Sunni (if that matters to some). This book is absolutely amazing! If you're a new comer to Islam or just trying to make sure you're praying right this is the book for you. It has VERY clear instructions with pictures on how to pray. The best part about the book is the fact it offers the transliteration for everything. My first language is English and my second language is Urdu. So reading Arabic for me is a bit of challenge. This book also explains what it is you're reciting during each part of prayer. The book is very short, I read the entire thing in 25 minutes. And just incase you're wondering, I was happy to know I wasn't praying wrong at all, but I did learn something new. I learned the meanings of the recitations in prayer. I would recommend this to anyone.

Very handy reference, especially for someone who is learning to pray on their own. It takes you from a simple prayer cycle to a medium one, to the total prayer, all in transliterated English. It is targeted for English speaking people who know nothing, explaining the purification process (wudu), to the positions, to the explanation of the Arabic words to recite for the prayer. As a convert, I use it every day.

I bought this book to help teach my son his prayers after reading all the stellar reviews. For a Sunni Muslim, prayers are not recited this way. I'm pretty sure no practicing Muslim prays like this. Only God knows. This book is way too simplistic and leaves out a lot of things you're supposed to say in daily prayers. This book maybe could be a first chapter in a larger book but that is a stretch. I have yet to read a good book on prayer. Most books don't really take you step by step so a real instructor is kind of important. I wrongly thought this would be the one. So still looking.

This is an excellent starter book for the beginning Muslim or for someone who just needs to brush up on details, like me. Very nicely illustrated and well-written. I highly, highly recommend it!!!!

This was helpful to learn the prayers to a point but half way through to 3 quarters of the way through the book I started getting confused by the way it was explaining how to do the prayers. So it wasn't completely helpful for me but it helped a little.

Allumdulillah This book is excellent! I'm a new revert and this book helped tremendously with salah. I struggled before with the steps but this book gives clear cut instructions. I would highly recommend it.

Really like this book, it is very very detailed. Great book for new Muslim converts or anyone interested in Islam.

The intent of the book was great. But in order to learn how to properly perform the prayer, one needs to go to the Masjid and learn by example. While of course using the reading material. Ex. Watching, asking, listening, etc... I think its great that a young Imam is trying to bring a better understanding to the prayer.

I guess it bothered me that Mclaren seems to think the problems we are all having are easily, or too easily solved. Things are not simple. But you already knew that...

Christianity is presently experiencing an identity crisis which is leading to a mega-shift on many levels. People of faith are again on the move, journeying away from broken religious belief systems based on static traditions, toward a more integrated Spirit-led way of life which engages all mankind and promotes unity rather than division, according to Brian McLaren.This is the first book I've read by author Brian McLaren, but it will likely not be the last. He speaks of hard truth but in soft love - a very Christ-like characteristic. The world today is awash with calls for "negative unity" - which is the affirmation of what we dislike most or feel compelled to protest against. But McLaren's call is toward something more elevating - "positive unity," which seeks to focus on building new models of hope.Standing firmly against such positive unity and hopeful transformation is what Brian calls, "your little inner fundamentalist," which always feels threatened by change which calls into question strong previously held beliefs. "Thank God Christianity has a rich tradition of changing course," writes McLaren.McLaren offers a detailed threefold plan to help facilitate this great spiritual, theological and missional migration patterned after Good Friday, Holy Saturday and Easter Sunday, which are symbolic of death, reflection and resurrection ... of letting go, letting be and rising up.I especially like Brian's analogy about what religion can learn from science in Chapter two. Science begins with a mystery, a hypothesis, then after repeated experiments progresses to a tested theory - only after exhaustive testing is it considered a scientific fact. But if any scientific fact is disputed by new evidence, a good scientist must be willing to humbly abandon old facts and conclusions. Science has a deeper love for truth and their testing methods than previously-held facts. Brian McLaren concludes this dynamic call to join him in becoming transforming agents with an uplifting story of a friend, Dieter Zander, who was a multi-talented pastor, speaker and musician who suffered a stroke which stripped him of his ability to speak overnight. "Before the stroke, I was working for God...working, working working," said Dieter, still struggling to talk after years of therapy. "Now, I playing with God...playing, playing, playing. Much better."Deiter's life today consists of working in a grocery store cleaning floors and bathrooms, yet one day he clearly heard God's voice telling him, "Urinal holy. toilet holy, grocery store holy, everything holy." "Instead of playing God, I'm playing with God, at play in God's good world where everything is holy.""To rise to the occasion of this great work we must descend in humility, to see what Dieter now sees; we are but children at play with God, living in a world where everything is holy...to relax in play, in God's limitless grace."Amen! I hardily recommend this book to all who feel called to jump into the next great movement of God with both feet. May we rise up with wings like eagles in this great spiritual migration toward intimacy with our loving Creator which brings healing our hurting culture!

I am enjoying this book. It is definitely thought-inducing. I read it through the first time and wished that someone else I knew was reading it so that we could discuss. I'm reading it now for a second time and am meeting with a group of people weekly to talk through it and hopefully live out some of these ideas. As the author states, change is not going to happen overnight, but I find value in much of what he presents and appreciate the perspective from which he writes.

This book says what I've believed all my life - that faith should be a way of life, not a checklist of what people do or do not believe. There's really no need for people to divide up by doctrinal differences, because it really isn't all that important to have the correct ideology. Doctrine has its place; but a faithful, compassionate way of living should be the central aspect of faith.

Excellent book. McLaren is a strong voice for bringing light to a faith based on Jesus, not on doctrine.In fact, I am using this book as the core for a Webinar for grown up adults who want to enhance their Christian spirituality.

Brian McLaren presents the much needed way forward, with much grace, love, and urgency--without divisiveness--not just for Christianity but our world.

For years I had considered abandoning Christianity and now realize there is a much better alternative to right wing fundamentalism. This book is a call to action to all who desire a more compassionate Christianity that seeks to reach out to the world and take on the world's massive and pressing problems. It describes a merciful, humble and loving Jesus - much different that the angry Jesus of fundamentalism. The author does not deny science to support a literal view of the Bible. The kind of Christianity described here is one that would earn respect from all reasonable people.

Brian has reshaped the discussion of Christian structures and influence and outlined a viable, yet difficult, road ahead. His vision is worth consideration. Again, those who read this work will be those already on this path away from a legalistic and violent God. Hopefully many more will join the migration.
