This book was purchased based on a review at a different web site. Like so many art instruction books this one presumes the reader/artist is already capable of drawing realistically. The text that precedes the projects is OK, but lacks some very important information such as why all the projects drawn with brushes rather than easier to handle tools such as pencils or charcoal, etc. Other missing information includes suggested size to paint rather than leaving the student wonder if a 2" x 2" support is too small or a 8" x 10" canvas is too big (or too small) - or why such large brushes are suggested for such small paintings. The exercises (called projects in the book) could be great refreshers for an experienced artist or just a creativity nudge to get the painting day started. But this book is not for a beginner or novice artist. Believe me - I know - I am a novice, and this book is not helpful.

My 13 year-old and I have had fun painting together. We chose to use 8X8 and 12X12 canvas instead of the recommended 5X5. I think any square size would work. We went out frantically gathering the supplies the author recommended. I couldn't find the list on amazon anywhere. It would have been nice to be able to order everything all at once. For anyone interested, here are the basics that we purchased: #6, 8, and 10 round brushes #4 flat and filbert brushesThe author recommends synthetic brushes. We bought these at the local craft store. Probably could have gotten a better deal on amazon, but we didn't want to wait! Also, I would recommend a couple larger brushes (especially if you are thinking of using a larger canvas like we did). A detail brush is useful too (so you can sign your masterpiece!)The paint colors needed for all of the projects are: Titanium White Mars Black Cadmium Yellow Light Cadmium Orange Cadmium Red Medium Yellow Ochre Unbleached Titanium Ultra Marine Blue Light Blue Permanent Cobalt Blue Burnt Sienna Cerulean Blue Dioxazine Purple Phthalo BlueThe author goes into detail about buying decent brushes and paint. We chose the grade just above the disposable type and have been happy so far. As for the paint, we got the cheapest tubes available at the craft store. I'm sure a serious artist would have paid more attention, but we just wanted to get started!Overall, we spent around $100 total on supplies and the book. Sounds like a lot, but it will provide hours of entertainment for us!

Excellent! I'm new to painting and wanted some simple tutorials that were not technically overwhelming or produced discouraging results because it was too far above my skill level. I'm having a wonderful time painting these short projects! Thank you so much for producing this book. I feel like it's giving me a solid foundation to build on. I bought my paints and brushes in amazon as well and for under $50 (including this book) am ready to paint!

I've painted 46 out of 50 of the lessons in this book (in order) and I love it. The instructions are clear and complete, each lesson is well illustrated and presented in the same thoughtful & thorough way (5 steps, creating each small painting from a blank canvas to the finished product). The book starts out with very helpful suggestions & information about supplies, color (hue, value, saturation), and how to approach painting. The lessons themselves are arranged in 3 chapters in increasing order of complexity so skills learned early can be utilized and improved upon. When I complete the final four lessons I'm going to go back and do every one of them again, which brings me to my only regret - I wish there were more lessons from this author. Maybe he'll create a follow-up??

These 50 little paintings are addictive. I looked at the first painting in the book when I got the book, and rushed out immediately to get some acrylic paints to try it because it looked like something I could do, but it was pretty. I've been painting one almost every day since I got the book and getting better and better. I look forward to painting when I get up in the morning. Some of the paintings in the beginning look pretty simple (but sometimes they're harder than they look!), but they're teaching important lessons. The paintings get progressively more challenging and more detailed as you go through the book. I think almost all of them are very interesting paintings. There's a wide variety of painting styles and types, and I really like that. I've never painted with acrylics before, but I've done a little drawing and watercolors off and on for years.

I am in love with this book! I have cut and prepped my 50- 5 by 5 wood pieces to do the 50 paintings. This is my New Year's resolution to get back into painting and I thought this book would be the book to make this project a reality. I can't wait to get to the painting of the balloon dog and the clothes pin. Not only am I looking forward to learning all the techniques, I can't wait to display them all when they are finished. The step-by step tutorials are easy to understand and the techniques look so interesting.

What impressed me so much - history buff I am - is the incredible wealth of historic information, from a vivid description of Baku as perhaps the earliest oil-boomtown in history,through a great many different revolutions in Russia and neighboring countries in the Caucasus (first under the Tsars and later the Mensheviks and Bolsheviks), the Habsburg Empire, Germany, Italy and the Ottoman Empire - in the early twentieth century, during and shortly after the end of WW I and between wars. We get detailed information about the rise of Lenin, Stalin, Attatürk, Hitler, Mussolin,i about the life of the Russian Emigrés in Paris, Prague and Berlin, about life in early Nazi Germany for Germans as well as for Jews (Germans as well as from the Russian-Polish Pale of Settlement).All this is knowledge is imparted in a non-put-downable true but incredible and unbelievably colorful life story of a of Baku-born Jew, son of an Azeri oil magnate father and an early Russian Bolshevik revolutionary mother who, during his lifetime, re-invented himself as a Muslim prince and Orientalist who, having emigrated under incredibly dangerous circumstances, through the Caucasus, via Central Asia, Persia, Constantinople, Paris, New York, North Germany and finally Berlin, became a famous writer who sold his books in many languages including German. Incredibly, as a Jew he became a bestselling author in Nazi Germany. .Through the highs and lows of his life, he wrote famous novels like "Ali and Nino" (never out of print until today!), but also early biographies of Lenin, Stalin and Mussolini. He finally died nearly pennyless in Positano in Nazi-controlled Italy in 1942, miraculously still unharmed from fascist or nazi persecution. A very interesting and enjoyable read.

Tom Reiss's book, "The Orientalist: Solving the Mystery of a Strange and Dangerous Life", is the very strange story of author Lev Nussembaum and his identity, which has been obscured through the 20th century. It is also the story of Tom Reiss's search for that story and is, at times, as much about the "hunter" as the "hunted".Lev Nussembaum was, at various times in his life, a Jew, a Muslim, and a hybrid. It seemed to depend on where he was living at the time and what he wanted to write. Born to Jewish parents in the oil capitol of Baku, he changed identities as often, it seems, as he changed clothing. Certainly the political extingencies of the times - the Russian Revolution, Nazism, Bolshevism - that Lev lived through, called for a somewhat "flexible" identity.Tom Reiss began searching for Lev Nissembaum when he began searching for the author of "Ali and Nino", reputed to be one Kurban Said. Long years of searching and interviewing led to Lev Nissembaum, who had died in 1942. Reis's book is a long, sometimes repetitive, but always interesting look at foreign places and wars and how they led to Lev Nissembaum.

This story opened up a new aspect of Jewish history of wish I was previously unaware. Lev Nussimbaum's involvement in so many of the tumult that took place in Russia and Europe during the years it covers is extraordinary. Sadly, the book also reveals how deeply seated anti-Semitism was everywhere this unusual person went. Bolsheviks blamed the world's ills on Jewish capitalists. Pre-Nazi fascists blamed Bolshevism on the Jews. Capitalists simply turned their backs on Jews. And he felt it all, no matter how hard he tried to reinvent himself.Lev Nussimbaurm is not particularly likable, but I have to respect his intelligence; and I can't imagine how I would have dealt with the challenging circumstances within which he found himself. He is flawed, like all of us. He was bright yet naive. He was hopeful at the wrong times. HIs fears lead him to be blind to the dangers of certain ideologies.My one criticism of the book was that the author could have found a better way to help the reader keep track of some of the many characters who come in and out of Lev's life, and then resurface later.

Lev's entire, albeit brief, life is fascinating and Tom Reiss does a superb job of researching and presenting it. I had long wondered about the "real" author of Ali and Nino since no such person named Kurban Said ever stepped forward to claim authorship. It now seems evident that Lev, a strange and brilliant Jewish Orientalist, deserves the credit. However, while the subject matter is intriguing, Reiss's writing style can be circuitous, his sentences are complex, often with many thoughts linked together in such a way that that it necessitates the patient rereading a sentence or entire paragraph and he frequently refers to people who might not be familiar to Western readers today (e.g., fortunately I learned in a college philosophy course who Martin Buber was). In other words, this is not an easy book to read, even though it is historically accurate and the meat of the story, complete with reproductions of old photographs, is truly riveting.As an aside: There is a very good movie entitled "Baku - The City of Ali and Nino." If you are drawn to this story as much as I am, it would be well worth it to track down this film, which puts the entire novel in its geographical and historical context.

Fascinating! I had to keep Google handy all the way through, as there were so many new names, places, concepts. Not a quick read by any means, but worth it. Lev Nussimbaum - Essad Bey - Kurban Said was a truly intriguing man. A Jew who became Muslim, from Baku, Azarbaijan, and fled various political aggressions, which led to him changing his identity. He came into contact with many famous people who influenced his life, including artists, writers & powerful political figures, & ended up in Nazi Germany as Hitler came to power. It was not an easy read, but I love to learn - and I surely did!

I pored through the blurbs three times before selecting “The Broken Circle.” I was not in the mood for a memoir, especially of a woman from another country. For such a story, thought I, all I needed was to recollect meeting, courting, then marrying my wife, while I lived and worked in Egypt. The primary difference, in my mind, was my spouse was an Egyptian Christian, and the author of this book was an Afghani Muslim woman, now living in Texas. Just seemed a little too close to home for me, at this time.Brother, was I ever wrong. “The Broken Circle” is now my favorite memoir. Even more touching than was “Never Stop Walking,” or “Three Against the Wilderness.”Try this on for size: If you loved Patrick Swayze in “Red Dawn,” or the primary story of “Sound of Music” with Julie Andrews, you will have a front row seat into Enjeela’s early childhood during the late 1970’s and 1980’s. At this point, just let her story creep into your subconscious…The only way this story could have been better appreciated, by me, would be to have listened to her narrate it as an Audible Edition.Now, on with my review…BLUSH FACTOR: There is no reason to shy away from reading this to anybody you like. No profanities, wild sex or gratuitous violence. In fact, I would home everybody would form circles of friends and kin and take turns reading this aloud as an inspiration to us to do God’s will.WRITING & EDITING: As with many memoirs, the early going can seem a trifle slow. However, the writing and editing are professional and the story unfolds in a manner to ensure maximum effect. Slow as the start was, it was sensitive enough that I found a tear or two trying to escape. Then, I came to page 68 and knew I loved this story and the dream, if it was a dream, Enjeela chose to share with the world. (See the excerpt below).POV: First person.Excerpt:‘…It was one of these freezing winter nights that I saw the man with the white horse.He walked right out of Ahmad Shah’s closet toward me. Beautifully written...the author has a way of transporting you to her homeland and sways you to see Afghanistan as a beautiful place that was overthrown and crushed by horrible events. It educates you on why some people stayed and others fled. I can't imagine the tough decisions that those parents had to make for their children. Great book definitely recommend it!

Most of the book was quite engaging and stunning in it's detail of a horrendous trial of emigration. Did not care for the ending which centered on buying fancy clothes and shopping instead of introspection about what had transpired traveling for the 2 or more years out of Afghanistan. The siblings she had endured countless challenges with in their escape were virtually ignored at the end after settling in India and only mentioned once in passing. I felt it was a slap in the face to them especially after all they had been through. It was like they disappeared off the face of the earth and she fawned over the sister who was whisked away in a plane as a baby and led the charmed life in comparison. I felt like the long escape was written by a ghost writer and the beginning and end written by the author as it was so different. Lots of things not said which make me suspicious: Mysterious contacts, lots of money everywhere but no jobs, lack of compassion for other members of the family, mysterious access to America--to me it was a sad ending in what it didn't say. How were 4 children living alone able to live in a Pakistan hotel for 6 months and have the money to pay for it. Where did they hide that much money on a trip through the six month trip through the mountains of Afghanistan and keep it throughout their 6 months in Pakistan. Too many kinks in the story which takes away from the real struggle of refugees.

This is a beautifully written account of life in Afghanistan before it became a Wharton country. Through the eyes of a five-year-old girl we see her comfortable life, in a large Muslim family in Kabul. Then democracy and peace are shattered, first with civil turmoil, and then by the invasion of the Russian army. Her security is rattled when her mother and 2 siblings leave for India. The remaining four children have to care for themselves, because their father, who works for the American embassy , is consumed with work and then seeks his own comfort in alcohol. Soviet tanks rumble down their street, and life is unsafe. Where is Mommy? Will she ever come back? Eventually Father arranges for a guide to smuggle the children to Pakistan. The account of this journey, and their subsequent wait in Pakistan for their father to follow is filled with vivid detail, pathos, and a near loss of hope. Little Enjeela has many sad experiences yet clings to the hope that they will one day be together again, and this hope is fulfilled.

Really enjoyed this. I’m not one for non fiction much less a memoir but this book has great pacing and I was completely wrapped up in the tale. I finished in 2 days. I have already recommended this to my friends.

As another reviewer said, I was not real taken with any of the free books for Prime readers this month, but I settled on The Broken Circle as I love memoirs. I was not disappointed. This was a great book. I finished it in just over a day, could not put it down. I also have to thank the author for introducing me to the poetry of Hafiz. Her father quotes it to her and the one about "How Birds Fly" appealed to me so much I had to write it down. I wish the author would write a sequel because I would like to know about their emigration to the United States and where the family all settled. It's unbelievable the trek she took as a little girl to get out of Afghanistan.

I noticed several lodging locations were not properly located on this map, (which created a real issue for me) I expect if I started really checking, there would be many more. Also, a number of points of interest that are shown on the "give away" maps are not shown. Unless you are doing something exceptional, save your money, the widely available "give away maps" are sufficient for driving around Dominica. For more detail for locations of lodging, food, gasoline can be found in: "Dominica, Discover the Real Dominica" by Anna McCanse

This is about one of the only full island maps you can find of Dominica. It has good details and I practically wore it out during the week we were there. The only downside is that its not waterproof, so don't leave it out in the beautiful moist air of the island too long. Definitely recommend this map, and I'm a map nut!

Though I have not seen other maps of Dominica, this inexpensive (and readily available) map gives a perspective of the island's geography.

I don't know why there isn't a map JUST for Dominica! I didn't need one for Saint Lucia, but it is ok.

Dominica is a small island but with this map I saved myself a lot of time and got to see things I would not have otherwise. Take this map and go to Dominica and drive your self.

Very helpful negotiating the twisty mountain roads of Dominica. It was good to click off villages as we went along so we could know just how far we'd come and how far we had to go.

Would like to find a waterproof / water-resistant version of this map, but the detail is exceptional for this small island - nevertheless, the rugged terrain of Dominica means not every variation in terrain can be covered here..

As someone about at the CCENT skill level, I went to take the test and am thankful I studied other sources because most questions on the ICND2 exam were things I don’t recall seeing. I call out the exam specifically because not every chapter of this book pertains to the ICND2 since it is geared for the 200-125 exam.I barely passed and owe my pass more to doing lab after lab and focusing on the key topics (google your target exam number with “exam topics” for the percentages).The exam goes deep so find other resources and understand the concepts as well as the specifics.I haven’t found the perfect study guide, but this is definitely helpful, just not as the primary study resource.

Everything you need is not in this book. However, this book is an excellent last month read. Combined with other resources this is a great buy. After I completed my CCNA R&S exam I lent the book out to a few buddies and they loved it too. The beauty of this product is that its small, packs in tons of information, and doesnt wear you out with the in depth explanations youll get from the more technical books. Now, you still need to read those 1200 page technical books, but this is a great overview. Would buy again.

This book seems to really cater to the CCNA test if you're trying to just take the ICND1 or ICND2 test it isn't really clear what you should avoid. My advice is to check the last page of each day and see what the extra reading entails if it doesn't mention any extra review for ICND1 or ICND2 just read through that topic and don't worry about extra practice (depending on which test you are taking) BUT BUY IT.... I don't know any other book that takes so many topics and puts it into such a small book but it is up to you to do the extra reading and practice depending on how familiar you are with the topic.

This book is really for the 200-125 but if you're preparing for ICND1 or ICND2, then its not for you. I'm preparing for ICND2 and I read the outer cover and it clearly says ICND2 but when I got it, I was disappointed that it was false advertising, i'll probably keep it as a reference for some ICND2 topics but again if you're preparing for the 125 exam, its great.

Has a lot of the necessary info you will need right before the test. Highly recommend. I have used the other 31 days before your exam products and they are good sources to cram info in but you will need the full sized book if you have never read about any of these concepts.There are a few spelling errors but not enough to take a star off.

The product condition itself is great. Brand new book, no tears/rips/imperfections. The content, however, leaves something to be desired. I had hoped this would do a little more to prepare for the cert, but it mostly just listed references where you could find additional information. You’re better off just buying those actual study books if your intent is to learn by reading.

Good book if you have about two years of actually networking with Cisco equipment. Easy to pick up and clear the cobwebs away.

That's what I muttered to myself when I finished "The Book of Lost Things." I said that and then I said this writer is seriously talented. From the start this book grabs your attention and carries you through an imaginary world and doesn't let you go again until the very last page. I wish every book I picked up was this good. I would be exceedingly happy!The Crooked Man is the worse villian and the boy, the best hero. I read this book in two days because I had to find out what would happen next. It was wonderful.

The story begins with David, obsessing over his “routine” (see: OCD) that he believes will save his mother from her life threatening illness. Unfortunately, David is unable to save her and his mother succumbs to the illness and dies. Some time after (side note: a little TOO soon after the death of David’s mother, if you ask me) David’s father remarries a woman named Rose and nine months later she gives birth to a son. It is around this time that David begins having “episodes,” moments where he blacks out and wakes up with no recollection of what happened while he was asleep. Poor David feels as if he is all alone in the world, as his father is working for the government and therefore is never home. So David is stuck in Rose’s giant house with just Rose, (who he loathes) and his new brother Georgie for company. David does his best to avoid these two and instead buries his nose in his books, as they remind him of his mother.Rose tries her best to make David feel comfortable, and even gives her the room of her late uncle, Jonathan Tulvey. The room is filled with Jonathan’s books and trinkets and David takes comfort in seeing that someone is as connected to stories as he is. David becomes curious and asks Rose about Jonathan and she explains that when he was younger he and his little sister vanished into thin air one day. David becomes intrigued by this and as time passes he begins to hear the books in his room talk to him, and he begins to dream of a very sinister man, whom he names “The Crooked Man.” These dreams become twisted with reality and as time passes, David travels to another world in which the fairy tale characters he has grown up reading about exist. However, these characters are not the same kind and caring versions that he has grown up to love. They are sinister and grim versions, each twisted into a new form.These characters were one of the absolute best parts of the story. I don’t want to spoil the fun for you so I will just touch upon some awesomeness. First, Snow White is a fat, disgusting and mean person. Second, Ever wonder where werewolves came from? Little Red Riding Hood had some issues with bestiality (I promise the story does NOT go into detail at this point, thank goodness, because, EW.) and the Crooked Man is quite possibly one of the creepiest villains I have yet to encounter (Rumple who?) There was also a rather kind woodsman, a loyal knight and an extremely creepy Sleeping “Beauty” thrown into the mix. All of these characters David met on his journey to see the King, the ruler of the land, who was having a very hard time ruling. David learns something from each encounter and it is through these extremely trying situations that the reader is able to see him grow from a spoiled, selfish child into a mature and kind young man.When pondering the setting to this story I realized how unique John Connolly writes. Ultimately, he was just writing about a vast forest, a small town, and a few huge castles. Yet, in my mind I saw a darkness creeping from the corners of my imagination toward David. I saw lights extinguishing behind him as he walked down the long corridor, I saw the trees sway when there was no wind. These are things Connolly simply hinted at yet I was able to pick up on these subtle images and make them into something that made me afraid as if I was the one walking through this land.The Book of Lost Things is harrowing and phenomenal. I haven’t been so enthralled by a novel of this genre since reading The Child Thief by Brom. It was deeply imaginative and sinister enough to have even the bravest adult looking over their shoulder while reading.

There are a lot of books out there that reinterpret familiar fairy tales, especially the tales of the Brothers Grimm. Some adopt an ironic or metafictional approach and address the reader directly about the meaning and nature of the tales. Some rely on the brothers themselves as the main protagonists. Many borrow familiar characters and repackage them with humorous, political, satirical, or literary messages of varying degrees of explicitness. Some, at the middle grade level, go for laughs, thrills, zany antics, or chuckles.This book takes an entirely different tack. David's story could have just been presented as a straight up fantasy quest in an imaginary alternate world. But, Connolly upped the ante and the rewards by incorporating his reimagined versions of the Grimms' tales and characters into his larger story of loss, growth and discovery. As a consequence we get the touching tale of David's quest seasoned with a literate and compelling reconsideration of the world as filtered through the Grimms' sensibilities.There is a lot to admire here, from the elegant writing to the sympathetic story of David to the deft handling of the fairy tale material. Sometimes this can be stern and sad stuff, and I wouldn't automatically call this a middle grade read just because of the young protagonist and the fairy tale content. But that said, this is a laudable and impressive, (and very entertaining), approach to fairy tales and for me was a happy find.

I Couldn't Wait To Get Home From Work Each Night So I Could Continue Reading This Book! I Will Definitely Be Checking Out More Titles By John Connelly! 👏🚸👑📚
