I was fine with the author's assertions until I hit page 19 and Diamond stated that in his opinion the people of New Guinea are smarter than the average European or American. This assertion is then supported by Diamond's personal observations and no scientific data. That was it for me. I have no personal problem with the suggestion that one cultural group could on average be smarter than myself as an American but base that assertion on fact not opinion. In the end I would suggest that cultural and socio-economic factors affect the achievements of any society. In other words, God gave us all a brain. We all have equal potential but it's how that potential is developed and utilized that affects the outcome. Diamond's unsupported observations smack of left wing apologist ideology and I have better things to do with my time.

Two decades ago a UCLA geography professor named Jared Diamond published Guns, Germs, and Steel: The Fates of Human Societies. Diamond hypothesized that the arc of human history was dramatically shifted by geographic, environmental, biological, and other factors, resulting in the worldwide dominance of the leading industrial powers during the past 500 years. For example, geographers complained that Diamond referred to Eurasia as a single continent rather than separately to Asia, North Africa, and Europe. That’s nitpicking, as far as I’m concerned. And many of these “errors” could simply be differences of opinion. Academics are unbearably dogmatic and dismissive of those who reject their pet theories. Some accused him of racism, although he rejected racist explanations early, forcefully, and often. That criticism is not only unsupported by Diamond’s book, it’s insulting to the reader. The most common and far-reaching complaint was that Diamond had succumbed to the heresy of “environmental determinism.” Understandably, Diamond grounded his argument in geographic and environmental factors—but he repeatedly cited numerous other influences as well. Ultimately, of course, everything we humans do, and everything we’ve done in the millions of years since our ancestors first climbed out of the trees, has been environmentally determined. There were complaints that Diamond had overlooked the contrast between temperate and tropical zones (he didn’t) and that he had only explained what happened 500 years ago but not subsequently (untrue). It might appear that at least some of Diamond’s critics never read the book. However, the most aggravating criticism was that he had ignored the motives that led the industrial nations to undertake colonialism and imperialism on a broad scale. Diamond addressed only the means that enabled the colonial powers to dominate, not the reasons why they chose to do so. To my mind, that’s no error. He didn’t pretend to explain colonialism and imperialism, merely to describe how it had become possible.Is it possible that most of these academic critics were simply bitter that Diamond hadn’t cited their own specialized research?The roots of academic criticismThough the critics undoubtedly uncovered a misplaced fact or unwarranted conclusion here and there through the book, the errors were exceedingly minor in the context of Diamond’s expansive hypothesis. It should be clear to any dispassionate reader that the academic reaction stemmed, above all, from narrow-mindedness and jealousy. The world of academia today is atomized. Specialties, sub-specialties, and sub-sub-specialties abound. It’s not unusual for a scholar to build a career on the study of a single obscure question that, when answered, will be of interest to virtually nobody. Interdisciplinary studies are frowned upon in most academic circles. Generalists are regarded as “not serious.” And scholars who write popular books, must less bestsellers, can expect a chilly reception from their peers.A wealth of meaning behind the titleTo understand where the academic critics went wrong, it’s useful to look at what Diamond signified by his title, Guns, Germs, and Steel. Early in his book, he dwells on the confrontation between the Spanish conquistador Francisco Pizarro and the Inca god-king Atahuallpa. “The immediate reasons for Pizarro’s success included military technology based on guns, steel weapons [such as swords and daggers], and horses; infectious diseases endemic in Eurasia; European maritime technology; the centralized political organization of European states; and writing. The title of this book will serve as shorthand for those proximate factors.”Diamond’s argument in a nutshellIn a Prologue, Diamond poses the question at the heart of this book. He quotes a friend in what is now Papua New Guinea from a conversation in 1972, when he was studying bird evolution there: “‘Why is it that you white people developed so much cargo [goods] and brought it to New Guinea, but we black people had little cargo of our own?'” To answer the question, Diamond begins his story around the year 11,000 BCE, when the last Ice Age was drawing to a close and human beings were beginning to form villages in a few places around the world. It’s unclear whether the formation of villages preceded the deliberate cultivation and production of food, or vice versa. However, regardless of the sequence, that shift from hunter-gatherer society to agriculturally based settlements set in motion the course of events that have led to the “civilization” in which we live.Diamond argues, convincingly, that the much greater availability of domesticable plants and large animals in Eurasia than in sub-Saharan Africa and the Americas. Furthermore, he explains that the east-west orientation of Eurasia from the Bering Strait to the Atlantic Ocean made it possible for the development of agriculture and animal husbandry to spread quickly to distant lands. By contrast, the north-south orientation of the Americas and sub-Saharan Africa—and the presence of barriers such as the Sahara Desert, the Panamanian Isthmus, and the deserts of northern Mexico and southwestern United States—impeded the spread of these (and, later, other) new technologies to the extremities of those continents. The advent of food production enabled the development of ever-larger settlements. This, in turn, spelled the emergence of labor specialization and eventually the growth of empires as well as the appearance and spread of communicable diseases contracted from domesticated animals. Those differences in historical development eventually led to the “guns, germs, and steel” that made Eurasian dominance possible—and dictated the huge differences in economic development between what today we call East and West.Guns, Germs, and Steel is crammed with facts and densely written. If that's the case then why have no significant inventions come out of India or China in the past 100 years when they have 4x the population of the U.S.?This book has so many flaws in logic I don't even know how it is so highly rated on Amazon. Oh wait.. I get it now.

I read a lot of suspense and thriller offerings but this one stood out for the sheer white knuckle, "can't put it down" excitement it engenders in the reader. The suspense and sense of helplessness is heightened by a tight plot and a villain as evil as any you might find in today's thriller genre.Evan Smoak is Orphan X, now known as the "Nowhere Man" who helps the powerless and abused to escape their oppressors, if they are lucky enough to have been given the secret phone number of the Nowhere Man. Evan was taken from a group home at the age of twelve and trained to be an elite assassin as part of an off-the-books black ops program known as the "Orphan Program". Having had enough, Evan walked away from the program only to be mercilessly hunted by the remaining orphans who still work for a shadowy government figure. But Evan is always a step ahead due to his incredible survival skills in computers, killing, disappearing off the grid, etc.But unexpectedly, Smoak is captured by a well trained team, drugged, and taken to a secret location where he soon finds himself at the mercy of a greedy killer (Rene) and a pack of thugs that just seems endless. Not knowing who he really is and thinking Evan is helpless, Rene tries to coerce him into transferring his entire secret bank account to Rene. Thus, much of the book is a chronicle of Evan's attempts to stay alive, keep his money, and escape from Rene's clutches. The suspense and threats are magnified when the Orphan leaders discover where Evan is being held and agents are sent to terminate him. The suspense ratchets up almost page by page as Evan attempts various schemes to escape and/or kill his captors before the Orphans arrive. I was truly glued to the narrative for the continuing battle of wits between Evan and Rene."The Nowhere Man: An Orphan X Novel" is well plotted with great characterizations, and a sense of "being there" that is both foreboding and forbidding. There is incredible violence, to be sure, but that aspect is outweighed by the battle of wits between the protagonists and the self analyzing Evan encounters as he seeks to escape so he can continue to help others. If you read "Orphan X" and liked it or if you are a fan of the action/suspense thriller genre, be sure to grab this one. It is a quick, white knuckler that will satisfy most readers.

Orphan X jumped the shark in just the second outing. The story here was just nothing short of silly, and all the bad guys are castaways pieced from from the edited scraps on the floor of a Roger Moore James Bond movie. A modern-day vampiric hemo-enthusiast, a man who wears a faraday cloak, bad guys with tattoos borrowed from B movies, a story that was nothing short of preposterous. This is a major disappointment across the board. I felt like a joke is being played on me as a reader just to see what ridiculous junk the writer can get away with before I throw the book at someone.

I enjoyed the first Orphan X book. I thought it was close to believable. However, Nowhere Man was pretty weird and not so believable. The villains became rather grotesque and creepier than needed and my suspension of belief became impossible. I am not likely to read more of this series. I haven't read other books by this author. Maybe he has a better track record with other books.

I thoroughly enjoy ALL of Hurwitz's books - read one and you'll want to read them all and I spent an entire Saturday devouring his newest release.. This new series about Orphan X aka The Nowhere Man is one of my favorites. The action, twists and turns and mayhem never stops and Evan Smoak (The Nowhere Man) is better than Houdini at getting out of seemingly impossible situations. So many times I thought it was all over for him and yet he somehow pulls off another miraculous escape/evasion from all the people who want to put an end to the Nowhere Man. Although this book can stand alone I would highly recommend reading "Orphan X" first to better understand the orphan program and Evan's incredible abilities and amazing talents and then you'll be delighted to know the second book in the series is waiting for you! If you like the Jack Reacher, John Milton, Mitch Rapp genre with a little McIver thrown in you'll love Evan Smoak. Looking forward to any future books by Gregg Hurwitz (which I always pre-order) and hoping The Nowhere Man comes around again soon.

The Nowhere Man is the follow-up installment in Gregg Hurwitz' Orphan X series. The main character, Evan Smoak is a former blackest of the black special ops assassin trained for that purpose from childhood. With an emphasis on total deniability, his identity was supposedly known to only his handler. Evan has since "retired" and with his unending wealth, lives a double life as a below the radar vague businessman, while occasionally assisting a few individuals in need of his special skills. This time out, Evan runs into an equally shadowy figure who specializes in kidnapping people possessing illegal wealth, believing Evan to be some sort of arms dealer. While there's a bit of dues ex machina near the end, a cat and mouse theme pervades the story that is both creative and engaging.Evan's tradecraft are on full display as he battles wits with a worthy opponent who appears to be able to respond more than effectively to everything Evan can initiate. This time out, Evan must use less obvious means and comes up with some pretty creative solutions and sometimes satisfying means for retribution. At the same time, Evan is still within the bulls-eye of the remnant of the original orphan program as he slowly depletes their ranks. The reintroduction of a former lost comrade suggests some future possibilities. Perhaps the only ding to the tale was the telegraphed resolution of the persistent roamzone calls throughout his captivity.Hurwitz has fashioned a compelling and engaging character with plenty of fodder for future adventures. Hopefully he can avoid simply reverting to a formulaic rehashing of the same plot over and over again and running the alphabet on his old orphan buddies.

I bought it looking for a tools I could use within the command shell that's native to Win9x, but even though it didn't have what I was looking for, it's still a great book, but it's definitely a programmers guide, not an administrative tool. Since I got it, some friends have told me how a combo of Kix & Rexx scriptinig is actually what I'm looking for.I still give it four stars because I can't knock it for not having what I want, because what it has is very, very good.

They used words that went with the letters but they were not commonly used words in neither english or spanish. Didnt provide any kind of pronunciation breakdown. Had to rely on the internet in order to teach my toddler. Otherwise the cards are of good quality

Considering this is a Spanish set and it’s missing two letters in the Spanish alphabet makes this a terrible purchase. There is no cards for RR or CH. let’s say you want to sing the alphabet song with your kids in spanish- well you can’t!

The quality of the cards isn't the best. They are made from thin cardboard. But, they are decent cards, and I think they will help. For $3, and free shipping, I really can't complain. I'm glad I bought them.

My two year old has improved his vocabulary with these cards. They are made in fun bright colors.

The flash cards are nice and simple with good pictures. The only reason I did not give it 5 stars is because there are some cards that even I am not familiar with - like a Walia?? What the heck is that? I ended up pulling those cards out of the deck.
