This book was probably one of the more de factor standards in its day, but, unfortunately, the information is dated. There's a lot of information to sift through and, as a systems administrators, it's a decent reference, but some of the newer nfs stuff isn't covered in this book. Generally speaking, I wasn't a real fan of how the info was laid out, but I usually like to buy more than one of the same subject because authors have a way of explaining things in their own style and your learning experience might be best served by one author over another.

I always thought configuring a Samba server for solid and secure operations was a black art until I started using NFS. My first NFS installation had security holes you could drive a truck through, fortunately it was two highly paranoid firewalls away from the internet.If you are intent on having an NFS server in your network then you will need help. Who better to give it to you than the man who has been looking after the Linux NFS and automount code for several years. Zadok certainly knows his stuff.The Craig Hunt Linux Library, the Sybex imprint that publishes this book, is quickly rising in my esteem. This is the second volume I've bought (the other was Auld's "Linux Apache Web Server Administration") and both have been absolute winners.I most appreciate that it does not waste time with any unnecessary details about Linux or Unix but gets straight down to the topic at hand (in this case a marvellous description of NFS design and workings.) A good way to go since most of the people, myself included, who will buy this book already have a fair amount of Linux knowledge or will buy a volume that can afford the more basic topics more space.Second is that it covers both the server and client side with enough detail. It doesn't talk down to you while at the same time it makes almost no assumptions about your level of NFS knowledge.Third is that while it says "Linux" in the title, in just the same way that Auld's book on Apache can be used by any Apache owner (and that includes Macintosh OS X), this book is useful for anyone using NFS on a Unix or Unix derivative such as BSD, Solaris or Mac OS X. In fact one of the server and client configurations I performed with the help of this book was on my personal Mac OS X box. That doesn't deny that there are minor differences in some implementations, particularly with automount and status software but in my experience they have been minor.If you intend to run NFS on a server then this book should be sitting beside the computer as you carefully check the configuration. I recommend this book to everyone, a "must buy."

This book is the most complete guide to NFS and to amd. If you administer NFS, you will find answers to questions here that are answered nowhere else.The book is in three sections: (1) NFS, (2) amd, and (3) Appendices.The first section speaks on NFS. It details all of the different daemons used by NFS, what they are for, and how they work. Configuring NFS is discussed at length, and from both sides (client and server). Securing NFS warrants an entire chapter, too, including server-side security, client-side security, and recovering NFS after a break-in. They discuss the troubleshooting of NFS problems, and what can go wrong. There is coverage of NFS version 4, and building and installing NFS under Linux.Section two speaks of the Berkeley Automounter Daemon, or amd. Erez Zadok is the maintainer of amd, and clearly knows his material quite well - and can explain it well, too. He spends a considerable amount of time explaining how to configure amd, including how to create maps and the different map options available. There is a chapter on run-time administration of amd, and a detailed chapter on advanced uses of amd - including automounted /home directories, CDROM mounts, NFS server failovers, and more. Another chapter is on autofs (which is different from amd!) and of the autofs support contained in amd. The last chapter in this section is on building and installing amd for Linux.The Appendices detail the files contained in the source package, and also list online resources for amd and NFS. There is also a section on amd and NFS log messages and errors, as well as one on amd configuration file parameters and command flags.The inside leaf (front and back) of this book contains a reference chart of common NFS mount and export flags.I have used this book quite a lot, and refer to it frequently. The writing is fluid and easy to comprehend, and the index (36 pages) is extensive. Erez helps you avoid the gotchas and pitfalls most people hit when running NFS for the first, or hundreth time.This book really should have the word Linux removed from its title, not because it doesnt cover it, but because the book shouldnt limit its readership by it.

If you already read financial books, this isn't for you (you'll already know everything in this book) But for the rest of us, this is perfect- a clear, easy and, most importantly, personalized plan for achieving financial goals and staying out of debt, achieving economic security and retiring comfortably. Bach's examples are inspiring and he has tips for controlling expenses - from waiting 48 hours before buying anything that costs $100.00 or more to showing how saving as little as 3.33 a day can add up to significant savings over time. His graphs and tables are very easy to follow and his worksheets are equally simple. Perfect for anyone wanting to save more, from students just out of college to families in a budget crunch.

This book and others in the series make me feel like we are already there. The photographs along with the pertinent text give a palpable presence and make it a bit easier to make educated choices about all aspects of foreign travel.

The Eyewitness Travel Guide on Bali and Lombok does not only give a good overview on the islands but is also very visual (great photos) and illustrates nicely the various places to see on the islands, especially in Bali.

This travel guide is well written, beautiful, and full of information. I would recommend it to anyone traveling to Bali.

I am having to use this for my HUM 101 class. I will start with the positives. The chapters actually are quick reading compared to other textbooks I have read and there are plenty of pictures in there that the book analyzes. I was also glad to rent this through Amazon because I only had to pay $40, while my campus bookstore was selling it for $100. Now here are the negatives, part of it may not affect you like it did me. I am not artistic, I am very concrete, so I am bad at analyzing art. When the book explains the details of paintings or architecture and states what they mean, I have no idea how they interpreted it that way. In fact, it is hard for me to understand the importance of what they point out. I am the type of person who will look at paintings quickly in a museum. The other negative is that the book will mention other details about a piece of art but not show it visually. My humanities professor has complained that they don't show the interior of architecture, which is just as important as the exterior. But overall, this textbook serves its purpose for a humanities class and still helps to a certain point. Probably my favorite part of the textbook is that they acknowledge that you may not agree with them on some observations and that interpretation of art is not black and white.

This book provides a thorough survey of pretty much all the arts (not just visual arts) using plenty of well-chosen examples, many examined in some depth.The organization of the book generally has a chapter for each art form, with each chapter mostly organized into various themes. This complements other books organized according to an historical approach.By the time one has progressed through the journey of the entire book, the diligent reader should come away enriched with new perspectives on life and reality.The one downside of the book, which isn't minor, is that I found much of the writing to be unnecessarily complicated and tedious. I'm not saying that the authors needed to "dumb it down," but I do think they could have conveyed their message much more clearly without compromising its substance. It's as though they just adopted a clunky, somewhat highbrow style at the outset, got used to it, and than ran with it all the way through the book, forgetting the needs and wants of their audience in the process. Lest one think I'm being too critical, consider the book The Annotated Mona Lisa: A Crash Course in Art History from Prehistoric to Post-Modern, which is both enlightening and a joy to read.The above issue brings my rating down to 4 stars, but I still certainly recommend the book because of the considerable value it brings to the reader. Just be prepared to be genuinely attentive as you read it. Your investment of time and effort will be well rewarded.

Once you get past the insanely dull first couple of chapters, this resource is adequate as a very basic introduction to the arts. The first couple of chapters entitled "What is a Work of Art?" and "Being a Critic of the Arts" contain exactly the pretentious ilk that drives many away from the arts. Get past these chapters, and you'll discover insight into many arts genres.

Ebooks are great, easy to access.

Authors are eloquent and sincere, they are passionate about every analysis of a piece Really teaches you how to write about art. Certain types of art, such as abstract art and architecture, become easy to participate with and understand. I would definitely recommend. I'm only sad i rented this and will not be keeping it!

This book is the beautiful educational peice you were looking for. I, for one, am hopeful it spawns multiple lines of supporting merchandise for those of us in the wildlife, science and educational field. We bought as a gift for our 1 year old but I’m not the least bit ashamed to say I plan on enjoying it myself until she’s able to handle the book herself. Looking forward to ecosystem bedtime stories!NOTE: When I preordered (also, this is the first book I was ever compelled to preorder) I was surprised to find a promotion happening where you register the preorder and you get a corresponding poster for free! I was so excited to hang in my little girl’s room. Unforunately, the poster arrived bent and creased with no way to contact the issuing company for return and reissue. So disappointing. The mishap isnt the result of the author and I didnt come out with anything less than I signed up for, but still saddened.

I love this book. The illustrations are gorgeous. There are little quippy jokes mixed in with well-researched information about ecosystems, animal behavior, trophic systems, anthropogenic impacts, and more. As a person currently applying to Master’s programs in ecology, I highly recommend this book. It’s a fun way to remind yourself of the basis of ecosystem science, but more that that, it’s a fantastic way to introduce kids to ecology!

This book is absolutely beautiful! It has an amazing amount of information in it, and all is beautifully illustrated. Broken down into sections, each section begins with a map of each of the continents showing their respective biomes. Then several of the biomes for the continent are shown in more detail each with a two-page spread, first with an illustration of the basic food chain flora and fauna, then a description of the ecosystem and its inhabitants. Each ecosystem also includes its biggest benefit to the earth and the greatest threat its continued existence. But the book also includes so much more! From describing the flow of energy in ecosystems, what healthy ecosystems look like, the different cycles the make up our amazing earth - such as the water cycle, carbon cycle, phosphorus cycle - it even includes an illustrated gloassary. This book has so much, and I highly recommend it!

Awesome artwork. Love books that use amazing art to help learn about things that other books often present in rather dry ways.

My granddaughter is a big fan of this book and particularly enjoyed the descriptions of the various ecosystems.

This is a great book for children and adults to learn and relearn about our world. I wish I had this when I were a child. The author did a wonderful job with the illustrations and concepts. I plan on buying more for family members.

Lots of interesting details in this book, laid out in short easy to read sections. The illustrations are unique, our 8 soon to be 9 yr old grandson will enjoy this , he loves informative books, and it will be a wonderful co-reading book for parents/grandparents.

Martin Gardner was a renowned author who published over 70 books on subjects from science and math to poetry and religion. He also had a lifelong passion for magic tricks and puzzles. Martin Gardner: A Remembrance The worldwide mathematical community was saddened by the death of Martin Gardner on May 22, 2010. Martin was 95 years old when he died, and had written 70 or 80 books during his long lifetime as an author. Martin's first Dover books were published in 1956 and 1957: Mathematics, Magic and Mystery, one of the first popular books on the intellectual excitement of mathematics to reach a wide audience, and Fads and Fallacies in the Name of Science, certainly one of the first popular books to cast a devastatingly skeptical eye on the claims of pseudoscience and the many guises in which the modern world has given rise to it. I purchased this as a stocking stuffer for my husband, who is an engineer. He has made several comments about how much he likes it. He's one of those people who can do calculus while half asleep, and he made the comment that he was having to flex his "math muscle" for this book. That's a good thing.

I have not had enough time with the book yet to properly review it. I bought it for my 8 year old son who loves math and games. The first thing to notice is that unike other books, the text and graphics in this book are very nice and clear. That is very important when you are trying to concentrate and learn, especially for a younger person. There is another part of the books with answers, they clearly explain every problem in pretty good detail. It is a good mix of puzzles. I recommend this book, will post a better review later.

Some of these are appropriate for my 11-yo, some are pretty challenging. For the latter (or former) there is an awesome set of explanations in the back.I'd been reading Gardner's column for a long time, so these were on par with what I expected. The sample shows the first few in the book, the rest are similarly excellent.

Fun book for a birthday present for my astro-physicist brother. He stated that these puzzles are very enjoyable and would recommend them to others!

If you love math, it is a good book to have. Kids might find it harder but if it is lying around, they may be tempted to pick it up a few times and before long, they might be into it as well.

I'm a fan of logic problems in general and have been a fan of Martin Gardner math puzzles since Omni Magazine came out back in the 80's (I believe it was the 80's.) I have yet to solve all the puzzles in this book yet so I'm getting my money's worth. I actually expected to have an easier time with the puzzles in this book but that's not the case but it's no fun if they are too easy is it?

For a couple that met in math class and later married, the puzzles in this book make for fun reading/discussing on the couch in the evening. yup. we're nerds.Fun way to pass the time, exercise your brain, or challenge your friends! Some great mathematics in here, accessible to the average thinker.
