I am having to use this for my HUM 101 class. I will start with the positives. The chapters actually are quick reading compared to other textbooks I have read and there are plenty of pictures in there that the book analyzes. I was also glad to rent this through Amazon because I only had to pay $40, while my campus bookstore was selling it for $100. Now here are the negatives, part of it may not affect you like it did me. I am not artistic, I am very concrete, so I am bad at analyzing art. When the book explains the details of paintings or architecture and states what they mean, I have no idea how they interpreted it that way. In fact, it is hard for me to understand the importance of what they point out. I am the type of person who will look at paintings quickly in a museum. The other negative is that the book will mention other details about a piece of art but not show it visually. My humanities professor has complained that they don't show the interior of architecture, which is just as important as the exterior. But overall, this textbook serves its purpose for a humanities class and still helps to a certain point. Probably my favorite part of the textbook is that they acknowledge that you may not agree with them on some observations and that interpretation of art is not black and white.

This book provides a thorough survey of pretty much all the arts (not just visual arts) using plenty of well-chosen examples, many examined in some depth.The organization of the book generally has a chapter for each art form, with each chapter mostly organized into various themes. This complements other books organized according to an historical approach.By the time one has progressed through the journey of the entire book, the diligent reader should come away enriched with new perspectives on life and reality.The one downside of the book, which isn't minor, is that I found much of the writing to be unnecessarily complicated and tedious. I'm not saying that the authors needed to "dumb it down," but I do think they could have conveyed their message much more clearly without compromising its substance. It's as though they just adopted a clunky, somewhat highbrow style at the outset, got used to it, and than ran with it all the way through the book, forgetting the needs and wants of their audience in the process. Lest one think I'm being too critical, consider the book The Annotated Mona Lisa: A Crash Course in Art History from Prehistoric to Post-Modern, which is both enlightening and a joy to read.The above issue brings my rating down to 4 stars, but I still certainly recommend the book because of the considerable value it brings to the reader. Just be prepared to be genuinely attentive as you read it. Your investment of time and effort will be well rewarded.

Once you get past the insanely dull first couple of chapters, this resource is adequate as a very basic introduction to the arts. The first couple of chapters entitled "What is a Work of Art?" and "Being a Critic of the Arts" contain exactly the pretentious ilk that drives many away from the arts. Get past these chapters, and you'll discover insight into many arts genres.

This book is the beautiful educational peice you were looking for. I, for one, am hopeful it spawns multiple lines of supporting merchandise for those of us in the wildlife, science and educational field. We bought as a gift for our 1 year old but I’m not the least bit ashamed to say I plan on enjoying it myself until she’s able to handle the book herself. Looking forward to ecosystem bedtime stories!NOTE: When I preordered (also, this is the first book I was ever compelled to preorder) I was surprised to find a promotion happening where you register the preorder and you get a corresponding poster for free! I was so excited to hang in my little girl’s room. Unforunately, the poster arrived bent and creased with no way to contact the issuing company for return and reissue. So disappointing. The mishap isnt the result of the author and I didnt come out with anything less than I signed up for, but still saddened.

I love this book. The illustrations are gorgeous. There are little quippy jokes mixed in with well-researched information about ecosystems, animal behavior, trophic systems, anthropogenic impacts, and more. As a person currently applying to Master’s programs in ecology, I highly recommend this book. It’s a fun way to remind yourself of the basis of ecosystem science, but more that that, it’s a fantastic way to introduce kids to ecology!

This book is absolutely beautiful! It has an amazing amount of information in it, and all is beautifully illustrated. Broken down into sections, each section begins with a map of each of the continents showing their respective biomes. Then several of the biomes for the continent are shown in more detail each with a two-page spread, first with an illustration of the basic food chain flora and fauna, then a description of the ecosystem and its inhabitants. Each ecosystem also includes its biggest benefit to the earth and the greatest threat its continued existence. But the book also includes so much more! From describing the flow of energy in ecosystems, what healthy ecosystems look like, the different cycles the make up our amazing earth - such as the water cycle, carbon cycle, phosphorus cycle - it even includes an illustrated gloassary. This book has so much, and I highly recommend it!

Lots of interesting details in this book, laid out in short easy to read sections. The illustrations are unique, our 8 soon to be 9 yr old grandson will enjoy this , he loves informative books, and it will be a wonderful co-reading book for parents/grandparents.

Martin's first Dover books were published in 1956 and 1957: Mathematics, Magic and Mystery, one of the first popular books on the intellectual excitement of mathematics to reach a wide audience, and Fads and Fallacies in the Name of Science, certainly one of the first popular books to cast a devastatingly skeptical eye on the claims of pseudoscience and the many guises in which the modern world has given rise to it. Both of these pioneering books are still in print with Dover today along with more than a dozen other titles of Martin's books. They run the gamut from his elementary Codes, Ciphers and Secret Writing, which has been enjoyed by generations of younger readers since the 1980s, to the more demanding The New Ambidextrous Universe: Symmetry and Asymmetry from Mirror Reflections to Superstrings, which Dover published in its final revised form in 2005. To those of us who have been associated with Dover for a long time, however, Martin was more than an author, albeit a remarkably popular and successful one. As a member of the small group of long-time advisors and consultants, which included NYU's Morris Kline in mathematics, Harvard's I. Bernard Cohen in the history of science, and MIT's J. P. I purchased this as a stocking stuffer for my husband, who is an engineer. He has made several comments about how much he likes it. He's one of those people who can do calculus while half asleep, and he made the comment that he was having to flex his "math muscle" for this book. That's a good thing.

I have not had enough time with the book yet to properly review it. I bought it for my 8 year old son who loves math and games. The first thing to notice is that unike other books, the text and graphics in this book are very nice and clear. That is very important when you are trying to concentrate and learn, especially for a younger person. There is another part of the books with answers, they clearly explain every problem in pretty good detail. It is a good mix of puzzles. I recommend this book, will post a better review later.

Some of these are appropriate for my 11-yo, some are pretty challenging. For the latter (or former) there is an awesome set of explanations in the back.I'd been reading Gardner's column for a long time, so these were on par with what I expected. The sample shows the first few in the book, the rest are similarly excellent.

Fun book for a birthday present for my astro-physicist brother. He stated that these puzzles are very enjoyable and would recommend them to others!

If you love math, it is a good book to have. Kids might find it harder but if it is lying around, they may be tempted to pick it up a few times and before long, they might be into it as well.

I'm a fan of logic problems in general and have been a fan of Martin Gardner math puzzles since Omni Magazine came out back in the 80's (I believe it was the 80's.) I have yet to solve all the puzzles in this book yet so I'm getting my money's worth. I actually expected to have an easier time with the puzzles in this book but that's not the case but it's no fun if they are too easy is it?

For a couple that met in math class and later married, the puzzles in this book make for fun reading/discussing on the couch in the evening. yup. we're nerds.Fun way to pass the time, exercise your brain, or challenge your friends! Some great mathematics in here, accessible to the average thinker.

How do you stump a snarky teenager on Christmas Day? Give him a mathematical and logic puzzles book. He spent almost the whole flight home going through these.

This was just the sort of book I was looking for.First, here is what the book is not:This book is not a field guide. I am not going to seek out and document individual species when I visit Costa Rica. If you are, get a field guide. But, I am just going to look around.This book is not a scientific dissertation. Since this is not my field, I would not remember the details a week after I read a scientific dissertation.But, this book is very useful for someone, like me, who just wants a basic understanding, in order to appreciate the rain forest when visiting. It describes how things work in the tropical rain forests of South and Central America. It gives many useful examples of interactions among plants and animals to make the authors' points. Reading it really gave me a feel for the forest as a system of interconnected parts.I noticed only a couple weaknesses. First, not their fault, it was written decades ago. The basic workings of the rainforest have existed for much longer, but I kept wondering how our understanding has improved since the book was written. Second, it was not rigorously edited. For example, in the Chapter 1, it lists the diameter of the Earth at Minneapolis as 17000 miles. There is nowhere on Earth where the diameter is 17000 miles. There are latitudes where the circumference of the daily travel via the Earth's rotation is 17000 miles, but not the diameter. Then, in Chapter 3, one place Gary Hartshorn's name is spelled correctly, and incorrectly elsewhere. These are trivial mistakes, and I know what the author meant. But, it made me wonder about the facts that I could not verify on my own.Still, these weaknesses should not stop you from reading this book. If you want a basic appreciation about how tropical rain forests work, then this is the book for you.

The idea that top soil in the tropics is very thin is something I have seen but assumed it was due to poor soil management again my simple explanation was mostly wrong. The concept (among many others) is that the biological abundance puts all the water and nutrients possible into living tissue. So even if I buried a deep layer of chipped wood and other compost it would be quickly integrated into the above ground bio layer. Areas like the Palouse in Washington State with many feet deep of top soil can't exist in the dynamic of the tropics. Tropical trees must compete with other plant roots matting the ground, many times a shallow hole has very dry soil at the bottom in the tropics. The depth of just this one idea resounds with many other ideas and the book is full of many just such ideas.

Among books that aim to express to readers the wonders of the rain forest, this one stands out. In 17 chapters that touch upon different aspects of the rain forest, the authors transmit their own passion for the rain forest and the unique intricacies that make rain forests some of the most precious places on earth.The book is not written as one coherent whole, but rather as 17 individual chapters or essays. Below is a brief sample of topics:- the strategy of dung scarabs to capture important proteins- the symbiotic relationship of sloths with the trees they prefer- the mimicry some insects have developed to elude their main predators, birds- the reason why some birds have developed migratory patterns to temperate climates- the reason why some frogs developed a parental care strategy and even marsupial pouches- the reason why some trees are hollow- how parasited species can benefit even in the most unlikely scenarios- why some plants developed hallucinogenic substancesThese are just a few of the topics covered in the book. It is written in a pop science format, so that an interested reader will easily understand and appreciate these and many more concepts. The authors carefully explain the relationships, often comparing the rain forest experience with those of temperate forests. The authors also focus on the possible evolutionary principles involved in adaptations presented.This is the very best introductory book on the subject. It is designed to excite the reader into learning more and even visiting the rain forest. In the mold of Stephen Jay Gould and Richard Dawkins, Miyata and Forsyth write a masterpiece that will make the reader feel smarter after reading it.

This colorful book takes readers to a butterfly pupa farm in Costa Rica. Captured and taken to greenhouses, varieties of caterpillars eat, grow, and molt. When they grow larger, the caterpillars are transferred to screened cabinets and supplied with fresh leaves until they become pupae. Some are kept to develop into butterflies and later released into the nearby forest. Other pupae are sorted, wrapped, packed into special boxes, and sent to places such as Boston’s Museum of Science. There are many different kinds of farms out there, but this is the first time I've heard of butterfly farms. It makes a great deal of sense that there would be such a thing, I've just never thought about it before now. This book beautifully describes what happens on a Costa Rican butterfly farm, how the butterflies are raised and transported to places around the world. The photographs do a wonderful job of illustrating what the author is describing. The extra information at the end is very useful, explaining the insect life cycle in terms of butterflies, beetles, and flies. The reference lists and glossary also make this a great resource as well as the link to further resources from the publisher. A wonderful book that would be very useful in teaching children about the life cycle of butterflies.

This book, while a departure from Burns' traditional materials for older grades, offers the amazing photography and in-depth analysis expected from a Burns / Harasimowicz work. Readers both young and old will be exposed to the story of the harvesting of butterflies for public exhibition. This work will satisfy the needs of younger readers, and pique the needs of older readers.An excellent work!

This book describes for kids the lifecycle of a butterfly while depicting a butterfly farm in Costa Rica.The photographs in this book could honestly be framed and hung in a gallery. They are just incredible really. Any kid (or adult) with a love of nature would pour over this book again and again to see the photographs within. I can think of no other children's book recently with photographs nearly as nice as these.The text? Well, it is just okay. There is not anything wrong with it, but it doesn't stand out to me either. And that is okay. It is factual and informative, but really is just backup to our star player the photography. This book is ideal for a kid who doesn't like reading I would think.In addition to photography, there is a simple lifecycle of the butterfly diagram, a map and glossary, further reading recommendations and website. This is a gem for early elementary kids for sure. I give it 4 stars overall, 3 stars for the content of the text and 5+++++ stars for the photography in this one.I received an electronic copy of this book via Netgalley for an honest review.
