A total of 15,000 children under the age of fifteen passed through the Terezin Concentration Camp between the years 1942-1944; less than 100 survived. In these poems and pictures drawn by the young inmates of Terezin, we see the daily misery of these uprooted children, as well as their courage and optimism, their hopes and fears. The ghetto of Terezin (Theresienstadt), located in the hills outside Prague, was an unusual concentration camp in that it was created to cover up the Nazi genocide of the Jews. Billed as the "Fuhrer's gift to the Jews", this "model ghetto" was the site of a Red Cross inspection visit in 1944. With its high proportion of artists and intellectuals, culture flourished in the ghetto - alongside starvation, disease, and constant dread of transports to the death camps of the east. Every one of its inhabitants was condemned in advance to die. These innocent and honest depictions allow us to see through the eyes of the children what life was like in the ghetto. The children's poems and drawings, revealing maturity beyond their years, are haunting reminders of what no child should ever have to see. This expanded edition of I Never Saw Another Butterfly is published in cooperation with the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum in Washington, D.C.

[...]Recently reading about the Houston Holocaust Museum's planned 2013 exhibition titled The Butterfly Project, I read for the first time Pavel Friedmann's poem The Butterfly" in which he remarks that he has seen no butterfly in the ghetto though some of the beauty of the natural world insists on itself even there. The ghetto is the Terezin Concentration Camp in Czechoslovakia. Terezin was a bizarre experiment of the Third Reich, which set it up as a place to hold Jewish artists, intellectuals, and German army veterans of World War I. To these Jews and to the world it presented this depraved and dirty ghetto as a gift to these Jews who had greatly to German culture. In face, the Germans even succeeded in fooling the Red Cross into believing the place was OK.Meanwhile, 15,000 childre passed through Terezin, but fewer than 100 survived. While they were in that hellish bastion of cruelty, these children were nevertheless blessed by the Vienna-born, Bauhaus-trained artist Friedl Dicker-Brandeis. Under her gentle direction and with the few art supplies shemanaged to hoard, many ofhtese childdren found a release for all that they were feeling as they encountered Nazi cruelty and awaited death every day.I Never Saw Another Butterflyexhibits these children's artwork, poems, and prose in the space of 106 pages. The book includes a catalog of the works that identifies the young artists' birth, deportation, and death dates.When the book arrived the other day, I decided I would not read the book until I coul read it in one sitting. The book deserves complete, uninterrupted attention. The innocence and honesty, truth and reality captured by these children create beauty where otherwise beauty could not take hold. Works of art on scraps of paper are the legacy of murdered children to the present. May we learn from them.

Everyone knows of the atrocities that the Nazi's perpetrated during the Holocaust, but how many people stop and think about the children that were in the concentration camps? Or what they had to bear? Shocking as it is the children at Terezin were allowed to have some time together, with a former art teacher, to sketch and create, and to basically have a form of art therapy for all of the horrors they were seeing (not that the Nazi's realized that therapy was occurring.) This book captures some of the poetry and artwork that these children created. Their fears, their hopes, and their dreams are laid out in the open for all to read. It is a powerful book and I would highly recommend it to all, especially to those taking or teaching a class on this time period.

Even if one more reference to the Holocaust is painful for you, you must own and read this book. Why? Because you will see the horror of that bleak chapter of human history through the eyes and hearts of children. As if by a miracle, these children purify their suffering and elevate it to the level of a spiritual experience. The simplicity of their art and the poignant insights of their poetry strike us with a power and honesty that no adult can capture by more sophisticated and intellectual means. This book should be in the library of every person who loves humanity, children, and historical truth. In their creations we experience the evil of war and the redemptive power of childhood's unspoiled sanctity.

The pictures, stories, and poetry written by these children who were surrounded by death and suffering and knew that their own chances of survival were slim tell so much about the human spirit. The depth of these children's understanding of the situation is nothing short of amazing. The tragedy is all the more real when you connect the child's work with his or her date of death. Everyone needs to see this art that comes from such young, innocent souls!

What can I say about this book? It is so powerful. I read it as a child and I never forgot it. Now as a 47 year-old adult I've found a copy as a keepsake to pass on through my generations. This book should be embraced and never ever forgotten. It is a rage gem.

This collection of works is mostly by children who were imprisoned in the Terezin ghetto during the Holocaust. Their writing is hauntingly and painfully honest, devastating, and heartbreaking. Yet, with death all around them, these children dared to hope and dream of a day they would leave the ghetto and return to their normal lives. The adults who taught them hoped the same things. It makes it all the more difficult to take in when one reads the appendix where details are given of the outcomes for these children, the vast majority of whom perished at Auschwitz and other death camps. It makes their hope that much more poignant and breathtaking. Of the 15,000 children to dwell within its barbed wire fences, only 100 children walked out. I highly encourage anyone to read this account of the Holocaust, this true and touching monument to these children and their teachers.

This book starts out good and then just gets better and better with each new Pilgrimage. Wright takes the reader on a journey with such descriptive writing that one wonders if his degree is in literature, instead of theology and history. Wright deals with the idea of Pilgimage on the road to Damascus, at the Jordan, in the Wilderness, in Galilee where most of Jesus minsitry took place, in Jerusalem, on the mountain where God is experienced in transfigurative ways, Gethsemene, where the agony of purpose takes place, the Cross (the best chapter), the empty tomb and then reflections on current day Israel. This book will take you away and cause you to feel like you were on the mountain, at the Jordan and was a witness of the cross. Wright's reflections are insightful, powerful and moving. Get this book.

Originally composed as a teaching series and orientation for pilgrims traveling to the Holy Land from Wright's parish in the late Nineties, this short, informal book contains some of the most touching and effective prose Wright has...wrought. The chapters move logically, geographically, and spiritually through a series of sites throughout Israel, and each could be the grist for a wonderful day of prayer and reflection, whether one is physically in the land of Israel, or is on a sojourn of the spirit. The Way of the Lord effectively brings together Wright's great erudition in Biblical history, his vocation as a pastor and curate, and his respectful insights concerning the issues on the ground. This is a fitting handbook for pilgrimage, offering the wisdom and challenge of a powerful mind and the companionate comfort of a warm heart. Highly recommended.

4 stars if you're going to Jerusalem! ....it's a devotional. not really a book to read with a purpose other than discovering yourself with a couple of thought provoking historical/geographical nuggets. The Epilogue stands alone as an excellent intro to the current situation in Israel/Palestine. It can be found online as a PDF.

I am about halfway through and really enjoying this. It is about pilgrimage in the holy land, but applies to our walk with the Lord wherever we are. I though that as a theologian he might be too academic or stuffy. He writes in a very warm, and accessible way. Very insightful. Lots to chew on!

Originally intended for those taking a trip to Israel, Tom Wright dramatically and skillfully points out that the true Holy Land is wherever believers are. He points out that a trip to the Holy Land may be of some value but not as a matter of 'earning points' with the Lord. An example of how he relates his "tour" to personal life is when he is talking of visiting Jerusalem. Located at 3000 feet above sea level, It doesn't take much of a journey on either side of Jerusalem to find oneself in a wilderness. Just as one may feel 'on top of the world' one moment and the next find oneself in a physical or emotional wilderness. We have all been there.I can't recommend this book highly enough. Once again Tom Wright proves he is one of the top theologians in the world, regardless of denomination or location.

This will be brief. It is simply a statement about my "hero" in a sphere for which he is often not known, especially in the States. This book is the heart of Tom Wright, the pastor. Written as a pastor to part of his flock going on pilgrimage to the Holy Land, it breathes the spirit of pastoral concern. At the same time it reveals a real knowledge of the Land - its history, geography, culture, and current struggles. For those who think that they know NT Wright, whether as friend or foe, it reveals what I like about him most - an academic who left the daily world of academia for pastoral ministry. And what a pastor he must be to his flock - now in the diocese of Durham. I have been to the "Holy Land" forty times and have read dozens of books on Israel, past and present. I will treasure this one more than any of them. I am in the process of buying up all of the copies I can, since it appears to be out of print.Read it as preparation for your physical and spiritual pilgrimages. It is a wonderful guide to both.

This book opened my eyes to new insights into the biblical narrative and how that relates to my own life. I'm not going to the Holy Land, but I am going on pilgrimage. But I think it is also helpful for those who see that our life is a journey. I loved this book!

I love a good dragon book and this one was a hit.Hope walks into a bar in Bombay and meets Aaron by accident. It's not a "Hi, how are ya?" type of meeting. He's drunk and stumbles into her. Being a dragon shifter, she knows from the instant that they touch that he's more than just a drunk in a bar.Aaron lost his twin brother, Zayne, and is mourning. He can't seem to get a grip on life without him. He spends most of his time at the bar, drinking himself numb. But he is a Guardian of the City. He's a powerful being, but not as powerful as the Elysians.The Elysians are some bad dudes. They get their emotions from empaths. Well, they're losing their empaths and therefore are losing their ability to feel. Zach, their leader, approaches the Council of Bombay and wants some volunteers to provide empath services (is that even a thing?). But a member of his own council has gone rogue and has kidnapped a dragon shifter in an effort to make her an empath. But the empath has to give willingly and that isn't happening.Aaron and Hope combine their efforts to rescue the dragon shifter. It was pretty cool how it was determined if Aaron was going to be able to handle the job. It was quite a test *No Spoilers*Meanwhile, Aaron and Hope are falling in love but they can't mate. If she mates with someone not of the dragon species, her mate will die. The psychic connection from a dragon is too much for a mate who isn't a dragon. Aaron isn't of the dragon species. He's an Ascendant. Besides Hope is already betrothed to Jason, a childhood friend.I really liked this book. It was a well-written fantasy with characters that were well-defined, interesting, and easy to care about. Vance made me laugh. The plot was tight and it had plenty of action to keep me reading (I had it read in just a few hours). I loved how the author built up sexual tension between Hope and Aaron, but didn't make it smutty. It was done with class and finesse.I have to say that Aaron tugged on my heartstrings with the way he was dealing with the loss of his brother and then not being able to make a life with Hope. Man, he had it rough! He really deserves a happily ever after.This is the first book in a series, but has no cliffhangers and can be read as a standalone novel. But after reading this, I want to read the next one.

Hope is a dragon shifter, the sister of the Alpha of the dragons. Aaron is an Ascendant immortal who has recently lost his twin in an epic battle of good versus evil. Aaron is still not recovered from the loss and meeting Hope has his world turned upside down. Hope is not faring any better since as a dragon shifter she can only mate with another dragon shifter. To mate with any other species would ensure the person’s death.In an initial encounter with an Elysian, the new villains, Hope demonstrates the magnitude of power dragons possess. No other species can withstand the psychic attack of an Elysian except for dragons. This creates an immediate alliance between dragons and the Council. This also ensues the Hope and Aaron magnetic attraction as they collaborate to bring an end to the Elysian threat. Hope tries to push Aaron away for fear of strengthening the budding chemistry between them that will only lead to Aaron’s demise. However Aaron is not willing to give up, not after he has lost his brother and now has found his mate in Hope. He will fight against anything, including Hope, to keep his mate by his side.After reading the Many Lives stories, I am amazed that Laxmi can continue to contrive elaborate stories with heart-pounding scenes and delightfully complex characters. I literally cannot wait for the next installment!!!

This is NOT a children's book :DHow it has a ranking there is rather disturbing.This story can be read alone. The other stories of the Many Lives universe do cross-over. It has fantastic imagery, and breathtaking writing. Laxmi FEELS what she writes, and it comes across in the telling. I have fallen in love with her series, all over again.And, Dragons <3

Laxmi Hariharan’s Inception (Dragon Protectors, Book 1) is the start of what I can already tell is going to be a fabulous paranormal romance series. Dragon shifters, immortal Ascendants, deadly Elysians - good vs evil, action, suspense, intrigue, this book has it all. I loved the romance between Hope (the dragon shifter)and Aaron (the soul-damaged immortal Ascendant), and how they take on all the challenges they face. Added to wonderful world-building in the author’s alternative vision of Earth, and supported by a really well crafted cast of characters, the is a great yarn. But for the fact that I’m literally dictating this review to my husband from my hospital bed I could go on and on with praises - the book definitely deserves it. Since I can’t do that I will simply note that the book is most definitely one to read, it is easy to highly recommend. I’m definitely looking forward to reading more books in this series.

Interesting the strong dragon heroine and her struggle to keep Aaron safe. Intrigued with the powerful evil Elysian and his step-brother. Liked the plot development and the passion in the story. The story kept my attention all the time and now I'm waiting eagerly for more.

This is a beautiful book filled with many beautiful photographs of the restoration process. For these, the book should be praised and deserves a place on the bookshelf of anyone interested in 275s or Ferrari restoration in general. Furthermore, there are very few books about such restorations and so for that also, the book should be praised.However, and this is the reason I give it fours stars and not five, this book has provides very little insight. Anyone with a fleeting knowledge of the 275 and its variants will learn nothing from the initial pages. Instead there are multiple quotes from other Ferrari books; all of which I have. I count only 8 pages of text on the restoration itself which was pretty disappointing to me. Those 8 pages also felt as if they were dictated via a a quick phone call made some time after the restoration was completed.The answer is maybe on page 15: "I was unable to go to Bruce's shop during the restoration so he just sent me pictures of the work". This perhaps explains why the book is devoid of significant narrative about the restoration.

WONDERFUL book - highly recommend

This car is fascinating to me, and the detailed de-construction photos are extremely helpful in understanding its construction.

What fun it was to drive I will never forget passing a Maine State Policeman doing over 150 on the Maine Turnpike.

I'm a fan of Jo Nesbo's Harry Hole crime books, so I was intrigued to see he had a series of children's books. I figured with the word "fart" in the title, it would probably appeal to my 7 year old son. The book was a huge hit with him, and me, as well! Don't let the title fool you, this is not low-brow toilet humor. Sure, there's a lot if talk about darts, but this book is clever, funny, and well-written. Lots of giggles, some surprises, and a thoroughly enjoyable reading experience. "What do you have to say about that?"

My son was a reluctant reader. Besides "Diary of a Wimpy Kid" he wasn't impressed with books, until this series came along. He loves it, reads to us from it, retells parts from it. It is witty, imaginative and fun.

I choose this rating because it is now my favorite book. This book has everything such as...*It is super funny.*It has action and adventure.*It has pretty cool illustrations.I loved everything about this book. I liked the writing style and also liked how they lived in this made up place called Oslo.I would recommend this book to everyone. If you like adventure it has it, if you like comedy it has it, it has some serious parts but it is mostly silly. This is my new favorite book of all time.

My 8yo loves this book. It's funny and it's a chapter book! Not a comic book! Nothing in the story is inappropriate. It's all good clean fun. I'm also happy the main character is a girl. She's not a pretty princess. Usually the books my boy has are all about boys. Highly recommend.

Not sure the translation was great. Reading it aloud to my 8 year old was...clunky...the concept was great, but something got lost in the translations...

An early Nesbo. Not worth the purchase.

Gave it to my granddaughter, who read it in two days! She loved it. Need to get her some more of this series.

Just returned from a trip to Seoul, used this book as my bible. It came recommended to me by a friend as the "freshest" and most up-to-date guide to the city, and I can't disagree. Very helpful in navigating the city. Directions were clear and concise. Maps were very helpful.One note -- some subway stop exits have been re-numbered since publication of this book, so when it says "take exit # ___", occasionally it was off. Especially in Gangnam.

I find Time Out guides to be the least touristy, most interesting, and most complete guides available; with the exceptions of theirhotel reviews. That being said, I was left feeling the guide to Seoul didn't do the trick for this increasingly interesting and important city. I didn't get a sense of the scheme of the city, or the places the other guides don;t even mention. I was left with trying to figure of the other guides to order, or that maybe Seoul wasn't long flight.
