The practical workbook reinforces the book and helps me to problem solve, self reflect and keep trying as I gain more confidence in my interactions with my 3 girls. Trying to stay conscious, respectful and connected as a parent can be hard and in order not to stuff I will do nothing so as not to screw up. This workbook gives me the confidence that I am on the right track.

Bought this to teach parenting skills to my therapy clients, but I’ve enjoyed working through it myself. It is a great way to think about all your interpersonal relationships—not just parent-child.

About the Author

Doug Schmidt is generally regarded as Wisconsin’s pre-eminent bowling historian. The editor and publisher of the state’s Ten Pin Journal since 1992, Schmidt has been a contributor to United Press International, the Associated Bowlers Journal International Magazine, Bowling Magazine, Bowling Digest and American Bowler. A graduate of the University of Wisconsin – Milwaukee, Schmidt was inducted into the Greater Milwaukee Bowling Hall of Fame in 2004.

Anyone interested in bowling's history & legacy in Milwaukee must have this in their reading library!

The author didnt do his homework. My mother Carole Lemke had more titles than any other women bowler but yet didnt get any mention other than a passing mention along with another story. Dissapoining.

It will surprise virtually no one with a Wisconsin background to learn that Milwaukee played a key role in the rise of bowling as a popular recreation. Assisted by a strong German heritage and a love of drinking beer outside the home, Milwaukee took to recreational bowling like few others. It was, relatively speaking, an immediate hit. Beginning around the turn of the century, lanes quickly began popping up - first a few lanes in a few pubs, then several lanes in multipurpose recreation complexes. As the sport became more popular, systematic governance became necessary and Milwaukee supplied many of the important pioneering leaders - serving as the headquarters for some of bowling's most important organizations. Probably even more importantly, Milwaukee supplied more than its share of great bowlers during the sport's heyday. Like everywhere else, bowling declined in popularity in Milwaukee as the millennium drew to its close. No longer were local bowling programs sufficiently profitable, nor were seventy lane bowling centers of much use. Yet bowling remains a significant part of Milwaukee's past and continuing culture. Thanks in large part to the prominence it gave Milwaukee when bowling was king.Doug Schmidt admirably recounts the history of bowling in Milwaukee, principally by introducing the reader to the places, people and personalities that led the way. The stories run the gamut - from tiny basements with two lanes to giant bowling centers with scores of lanes, from quiet and careful businessmen to live-fast, die-young shooting stars. The story probably isn't entirely coherent. Nor will everyone find great interest here - indeed, I struggled through portions where the author highlighted seemingly endless game and series scores. But, Mr. Schmidt successfully retrieves the lost glory of one of Milwaukee's truly glorious pasts. For a time Milwaukee was very nearly the center of the world as far as bowling was concerned, and for an even greater period of time one could not speak of top rank bowling without considering Milwaukee. Mr. Schmidt shows why that was so and tells us who was responsible. Perhaps, this isn't the most important history, but it is fun and it's a piece of the puzzle.

I have read this book from front to back their is a lot of information that I didn't even know. Specially growing up in a bowling family. Doug informed a lot of history in this book. I am glad he covered a lot. If you look in the back of the book he even have bowling centers from the Milwaukee area listed with all the different names. I was happy that he mention the three guys who shot a 900 series which included my brother PJ. This is a must read book.

Milwaukee is the ultimate blue-collar town, so it's no surprise that bowling was a huge sport in the area. Doug Schmidt is a fine writer and researcher who is a true expert on bowling history. Buy this book!

Although I have not yet read my copy, I have heard the author interviewed on Wisconsin Public Radio. If his writing is as informative and light as his conversation, this "history" of Germans in Milwaukee and the evolvement of bowling as we know it today will be a great read.

After having played and/or storytold numerous versions and editions of White Wolf games, The World of Darkness Minds' Eye Theater book leaves me amazed and deeply impressed. This is where any LARP game should start. I say this, not because this is the core rulebook for MET, but because this is the best thing White Wolf has ever published.OK, I know that this is a big claim to make. Consider, however, that this book gives systems and background for where we all start: humans with no knowledge of the supernatural world. This book, in other words, gives characters a path into the WoD. The LARP games have matured into character-focused (as opposed to the systems focus of earlier editions) platforms to tell tales of personal horror. Gone is the meta-plot or cannon plot of earlier editions. The storyteller is encouraged to focus story and action around the characters as they slowly discover the WoD before getting drawn into one of the character types and actually become a supernatural being. This book is focused on role-players as opposed to gamers. Think about this. Of what does your game need more: jumbotrons showing kindred battles or involved, vital characters helping to drive the plot?This book shows what the best of LARP is all about. It is indespensible.

From a mechanics standpoint, NWOD has its rules standardized and the various denizens are not as contradictory. As an OWOD enthusiast, its not comparable. As I have no other game option, I'm playing Requiem.

The typos are annoying and I absolutely hate some of the elements of NWoD. Having said that, the system is much more streamlined for LARPing and I really appreciate some of the mechanic fixes. Everything is fairly straight forward and easy to find, also a big plus. This is a good way to get started in role-playing.

There are a ton of typos and spelling error through out the book. However once you get past that the core rule system is easy to understand and fun to play. It is also a must if you wish to join White Wolf's world wide campaign.

This is such a nifty little volume - enlightening and fun to read. I consider myself being quite good with words but this book shows that there is room for improvement. With this book there is no excuse for sloppy writing. And when I edit whatever my husband writes and he argues with me about a word, I now have written proof when I know I'm right. :-))

This is a book we all need. Anyone who writes, speaks or listens can use some help. It is amazing to me how often I hear the wrong word used on the big news channels by their newspersons. I find myself looking up words as sometimes I have found that by hearing the wrong word used over time we come to think it is the right word!

Very helpful in finding the correct use and spelling of words needed for writing letters and other written information. I refer to it often.

An interesting wee volume that has some interesting and alsofunny entries. The illustrations are good and the book as a wholeis well worth the price.

I bought this book for a friend/co-worker who is always correcting my word usage. I won't say who's usually right but I'm a stickler for proper spelling and pronunciation. He got a kick out of me giving the book to him. I hope he uses it!

“The Forgotten Books of the Bible” illuminates five ancient biblical texts (The Song of Songs, Ruth, Lamentation, Ecclesiastes, and Esther) helping the modern reader to hear them not just as meaningful truth bombs from the past, but edgy commentary in today’s politically charged society. Williamson writes with compassionate precision; a rare combination in any modern work, but especially precious in the field of biblical interpretation. He takes these often overlook books of the Bible and lifts them out of the relative obscurity they suffer in modern Christianity (though as he notes, they were never forgotten in Judaism). Yet, not only does he lift them up, but he makes them seeringly applicable to modern day movements like Black Lives Matter, #MeToo, and immigration reform. In fact, he applies the message in these books to current issues in a way that makes me wonder how I ever missed their relevance.Each chapter focuses on one of the five books and includes commentary highlighting key narrative and interpretive elements. These section of biblical commentary are scholarly but accessible. Anyone leading a Bible study on one of the books will find ample engaging material to share with the class. As a preacher and early reviewer, I was able to build a complete summer sermon series around the five books using Williamson’s text as my principal source of inspiration beyond the books themselves. The three week series on Ruth was especially well received as I shared his insights on Ruth as an immigrant and all the implications that has for the modern day immigration debate.The chapter on Lamentations is also especially helpful by providing an accessible framework for this dense text. Then by applying Lamentation to modern issues of protest and trauma Williamson opens it to every reader who feels the call to testify against injustice or just cry out in despair.The chapters on Esther, Song of Songs and Ecclesiastes are equally delightful. Each one provides explanation, insight, and inspiration. The “Forgotten Books of the Bible” offers a rare combination of solid biblical scholarship, a style accessible to just about anyone, and unapologetic application of the biblical text to modern issues of injustice. It turns out the injustice we face today is the same injustice people have faced for millennia. This might seem like it could be depressing, but Williamson uses these ancient texts to reveal the injustices as old foes who can be defeated, and simultaneously offers the same texts as one of the tools we need to keep fighting.

I’m not a theologian or scholar, and this book is as accessible as it is thought-provoking. This is a book for those who doubt, who feel despair, who are being pulled to protest but aren’t sure how, who struggle to find truth among all the noise. It’s also a book for those who aren’t feeling despair or protest and can’t quite understand why they are seeing so many people who are, and who look to the Bible for guidance and understanding. In short, it’s a book for all of us with enormous relevance right now.

Williamson writes beautifully for a wide audience, which this book deserves. The book considers five biblical texts that are often considered also-rans in the Christian tradition, which is a shame, because they are so rich and, well, just plain fascinating: Song of Songs, Ruth, Lamentations, Ecclesiastes, and Esther.Williamson looks at these texts as conversation partners with contemporary issues of the day, such as Song of Songs and human sexuality/#MeToo, and Ruth and immigration. He ably avoids "ripped from the headlines" syndrome that can plague many books that try to tackle current events, though. He pulls this off because the stories resonate across the ages, but also because the dynamics underlying so many of our current issues are also timeless, and he treats them with wisdom and care.In addition to being a scholar, Williamson also pastors Mercy Church, a community in Little Rock that ministers with and to people experiencing homelessness and other challenges. This gives him an important and needed vantage point from which to write and reflect.

These are perplexing books because they rarely mention YHWH/God. When they do, they do so from a worldview or theological perspective that unsettles the status quo crowd. "No, don't say it that way." "We can't talk like that." "Should this even be in the Bible?" Yet these books offer as a different yet equally faithful perspective on God as those offered by Psalms (my favorite book of the Bible), Nehemiah, Isaiah or Joshua.This is where Williamson shines as a scholar and a preacher. I was pleasantly surprised when I saw Hebrew terminology on p. 3, not because I did not think the author a incapable scholar. Far from it. I purchased this book because I know Williamson is a fine scholar. I was pleasantly surprised because Williamson wants the reader to have a firm grasp on the theological content of the Five Scrolls. To understand the perspective on YHWH/God offered in these books, we must understand the language and rhetoric that was used in crafting their messages.Yet Williamson is not only a scholar; he is also a preacher. Too often today, Christian writers of all stripes skip over the cultural context of the passage they are examining and seek to immediately apply this ancient teaching to today's context. To do is not only short-sighted; it is irresponsible. Once Williamson sets the stage, he deftly pulls back the curtain and shows the reader how these unsettling books can speak perhaps more boldly today than ever before. Whether we want to admit it or not, the books of Ecclesiastes, Ruth, Esther, Lamentations and the Song of Songs are the words of those often outside the church's walls. The only book missing in this regard is Job. The writers of these books were deeply faithful, yet possessed a more traumatic relationship with YHWH/God, a relationship that must be honored as authentic. Williamson does this not only in his writing but also in his ministry in Little Rock, which shows me that he practices what he preaches.Williamson has, with this book, inherited the legacy of Brown, Brueggemann and Crenshaw, great Hebrew Bible scholars of a previous generation who sought to connect these writings to the life and practice of the Church. I will continue to follow Williamson's writings with great enthusiasm and continue to recommend this book to anyone looking for a "counter" view of faithfulness.

To complete the presentation we brought the children bags of mandarin oranges to share and each child received a red envelope with a Chinese coin inside (also purchased through Amazon). The teacher asked to borrow the book so that the children could reread it throughout the week. In summation, this book is short, sweet and to the point. Filled with wonderful illustrations, it is perfect for ages 2-5.

Reading this book right now to my 3.5 year olds in preparation for CNY in a couple weeks. Last year they were too young to understand but this year they are catching onto the idea and concepts of the holiday and this book is a great help. The illustrations are adorable and colorful to capture their attention and the story is clear and easy for them to understand.

I love this book so much. I wish it were a series! (Someone tell me it's a series?)

Wonderful book for childcare

Perfec tfor introducing little ones to the holiday - gave it to several friends. Probably best for one and up, but the younger babies love the color.

I read this book to my 3-year old daughter's class in this Chinese New Year. It covers the basic facts of Chinese traditions celebrating Chinese New Year. Actually, I do not like the pictures very much. So I did not rate it 5.

Just a lovely intro to Chinese New Year for kids of all ages. The illustrations and characters convey the nature of CNY to young readers. Cute and worth every penny!
