Janette Oke has a way of creating characters that absolutely jump off the page and become alive. I have read several of her series and enjoyed each one. In this series, the Canadian West, she manages to show the fullness of life in the two main characters, Elizabeth and her husband Wynn. Wynn is a RCMP who is stationed way out north, in Indian territory, and cares deeply for the people and his job. Elizabeth is a city girl, who though deeply in love, doesn't know how hard it will be to adapt to such a different lifestyle and culture. The book chronicles their ups and downs, joys and struggles and helps you to appreciate God's plan for each of us in the process. These books are so wonderful and would be terrific to read as a family -although that is certainly not necessary.In a time when so much of what is written is full of despair, foul language and outright disregard for others, it is lovely to find something that is real and yet fills your heart and soul with joy.
I used to read Janette Oke a lot when I was younger so I decided to pick up this book in a moment of nostalgia. In a nutshell, this book is about the trial and tribulations of Elizabeth and Wynn while they endure the hardships of the rugged west.You don't have to have read the first two books in the series but it might be helpful. Some characters are mentioned in passing that will be unfamiliar if you haven't read the previous two books but it doesn't affect the present storyline much. Some books are a historical fiction with religious overtones; this particular book is a Christian novel that is historical fiction (if the difference makes sense). It's a simple/quick read and you find yourself really caring about the characters--all of them. There is heartache and sorrow along with joy and triumph.There is one small thing that really bugged me though. Elizabeth really struggled and she made mistakes but it frustrated me a bit that Wynn was so good. Wynn made all the right decisions and was the pillar for Elizabeth to lean on. He didn't argue, yell, or do anything crazy. He had the appropriate emotions at the appropriate times. He always remembered to trust in God and pray. It wasn't just a matter of a perfect/imperfect characters but it almost came across as "the man knows best," which rubbed me the wrong way. This didn't ruin the book for me in anyway and it was still a good book, but I'm not sure if I will finish the series because my irritation would only grow.Any detail will give something away so I will keep from spoiling this for someone else.
MY favorite books right now, I am obsessed with her works I cant wait to read new stories thank you for all these amazing voyages into the past with some true romance. I find that when sometimes too much is going on reading Janette books transports me and makes ,me truly happy.
Janette Oke continues to bring us the story of Wynn and Elizabeth. We see Elizabeth's character developing more and continuing to mature. The references to Scripture are welcome additions to the text. The adventures this village, Wynn and Elizabeth included, have given pleasure, pain, and humility to the reader. I can't wait to see what's in store for Wynn and Elizabeth next!
A very well written book. The writer helps you feel as if you are right there... whether it's a snow storm or a warm summer day... with just a little imagination, you can almost feel you are there.
I Liked this book because it tells how a young couple was able to face some of life's difficult challenges because they believed in the almighty and always respected each other. They cherished each moment that they spent together and served the people of their village that were less fortunate than they were. They were never selfish in their daily living activities, thereby gaining the respect of the community in which they resided.
Love this book! As I did all those before it. It was interesting to go through the daily experiences Elizabeth had with the natives of the area. And especially keeping God in the story.
Love this author and her writing. Wynn and Elizabeth are such a great couple and the battle with infertility is one so many women go through.
