Review

An astonishing machine learning book: intuitive, full of examples, fun to read but still comprehensive, strong and deep! A great starting point for any university student―and a must have for anybody in the field.―Jan Peters, Darmstadt University of Technology; Max-Planck Institute for Intelligent SystemsKevin Murphy excels at unraveling the complexities of machine learning methods while motivating the reader with a stream of illustrated examples and real world case studies. The accompanying software package includes source code for many of the figures, making it both easy and very tempting to dive in and explore these methods for yourself. A must-buy for anyone interested in machine learning or curious about how to extract useful knowledge from big data.―John Winn, Microsoft Research, CambridgeThis is a wonderful book that starts with basic topics in statistical modeling, culminating in the most advanced topics. It provides both the theoretical foundations of probabilistic machine learning as well as practical tools, in the form of Matlab code. The book should be on the shelf of any student interested in the topic, and any practitioner working in the field.―Yoram Singer, Google Inc.This book will be an essential reference for practitioners of modern machine learning. It covers the basic concepts needed to understand the field as whole, and the powerful modern methods that build on those concepts. In Machine Learning, the language of probability and statistics reveals important connections between seemingly disparate algorithms and strategies. Thus, its readers will become articulate in a holistic view of the state-of-the-art and poised to build the next generation of machine learning algorithms.―David Blei, Princeton University

In a nutshell, the value of reading Murphy's Machine Learning highly depends on what you expect to get out of it.------------------As a graduate student who had read a descent number of papers in the field, I feel very conflicted about this textbook.------------------If you expect to teach yourself machine learning from this textbook, this is in my opinion almost surely *not* the textbook to get. (0/5 Stars)-The content of the textbook is highly disorganized. Future chapters are constantly referenced in the text (as if you have already read them!). Perplexingly, meaningful explanations of concepts are often delayed by multiple chapters. (Ex. BIC is introduced in Ch.6 but a mathematical justification is provided only in Ch. 8 when the mathematical justification could have (and should have) been in Ch. 6).-A number of topics are merely mentioned (like VC dimension) but not actually discussed at any reasonable length, making some sections of the textbook meaningless.-I would instead recommend the related (but different) text Introduction to Statistical Learning with Applications in R as it is quite accessible.-----------However, if you are an instructor and wish to use this textbook as a supplement to a course or are a researcher then Murphy's Machine Learning is in my opinion could be a worthwhile purchase. (4/5 stars)-The examples, references and illustrations give the textbook a particularly nice touch. (I particularly enjoyed the example of calculating the posterior probability of user ratings of two different items on Amazon). In summary, if you are an instructor that wants their students to learn how to read challenging exposition to prepare them for reading research papers in the field or if you wish to use this as a reference, then this is a good choice. Otherwise, pass.

(Disclaimer: I have worked with a draft of the book and been allowed to use the instructor's review copy for this review. I have bought the book from Amazon.co.uk, but apparently this Amazon.com review can't be tagged "verified purchase". I don't receive any compensation whatsoever for writing this review. I hope it will help you chose a machine learning textbook.)Similar textbooks on statistical/probabilistic machine learning (links to book websites, not Amazon pages):- Barber's Bayesian Reasoning and Machine Learning ("BRML", Cambridge University Press 2012)- Koller and Friedman's Probabilistic Graphical Models ("PGM", MIT Press 2009)- Bishop's Pattern Recognition and Machine Learning ("PRML", Springer 2006)- MacKay's Information Theory, Inference and Learning Algorithms ("ITILA", CUP 2003)- Hastie, Tibshirani and Friedman's Elements of Statistical Learning ("ESL", Springer 2009)* Perspective: My perspective is that of a machine learning researcher and student, who has used these books for reference and study, but not as classroom textbooks.* Audience/prerequisites: they are comparable among all the textbooks mentioned. BRML has lower expected commitment and specialization, PGM requires more scrupulous reading. The books differ in their topics and disciplinary approach, some more statistical (ESL), some more Bayesian (PRML, ITILA), some focused on graphical models (PGM, BRML). K Murphy compares MLAPP to others here. For detailed coverage comparison, read the table of contents on the book websites.* Main strength: MLAPP stands out for covering more advanced and current research topics: there is a full chapter on Latent Dirichlet Allocation, learning to rank, L1 regularization, deep networks; in the basics, the decision theory part is quite thorough (e.g. will mention Jeffrey's/uninformative priors). The book is "open" and vivid, doesn't shy away from current research and advanced concepts. This seems to be purposeful, as it shows in many aspects:- quotes liberally from web sources, something usually not done in academic publications- borrows "the best" from other authors (always with permission and acknowledgment, of course): most importantly the best pictures and diagrams, but also tables, recaps, insightful diagrams. Whereas other books will produce their own pictures and diagrams themselves (eg, PRML has a distinctive clarity and style in its illustrations), MLAPP takes many of its colour illustrations from other people's publications; therefore it can select the most pithy and relevant pictures to make a point. You could think that reproductions may be illegible and require extra effort to interpret because they come from a variety of sources; I have found that the bonus coming from having precisely the right image prevails.- frequent references to the literature, mentions of extensions and open questions, as well as computational complexity considerations: for instance, the section on HMMs will mention duration modeling and variable-duration Markov models, and a comparison of the expressive power of hierarchical HMMs versus stochastic context-free grammars, complete with relevant citations, and a brief mention of the computational complexity results from the publications. All this connects the material with research and new ideas in a fine way -- which other textbooks don't achieve, I find. For instance, PGM defers references to a literature section at the end of each chapter, resulting in a more self-contained, but more poorly "linked" text.* Didactic aids: Another distinctive feature is that the author clearly has tried to include didactic aids gathered over the years, such as recaps, comparative tables, diagrams, much in the spirit of the "generative model of generative models" (Roweis and Ghahramani): e.g. table comparing all models discussed, pros and cons of generative vs. discriminative models, recap of operations on HMMs (smoothing, filtering etc), list of parameter estimation methods for CRFs.* Editorial features: Other editorial features worth mentioning are- compared to others, helpful mentions of terminology, e.g. jargon, nomenclature, concept names, in bold throughout the text ("you could also devise a variant thus; this is called so-and-so")- mathematical notation relatively clear and consistent, occasional obscurities. PGM stands out as excruciatingly precise on this aspect.- boxes/layout: no "skill boxes" or "case study boxes" (PGM), not many roadmap/difficulty indications like ITILA or PGM, examples are present but woven into the text (not separated like PGM or BRML). Layout rather plain and homogeneous, much like PRML.- sadly lacks list of figures and tables, but has index of code* Complete accompanying material:- interesting exercises (yet fewer than PRML, BRML, PGM); solutions, however, are only accessible to instructors (same with BRML, PGM), which in my experience makes them only half as useful for the self-learner. PRML and ITILA have some solutions online resp. in the book.- accompanying Matlab/Octave source code, which I found more readily usable than BRML's. PGM and PRML have no accompanying source code, even though the toolkit distributed with Koller's online PGM class might qualify as one. I find accompanying code a truly useful tool for learning; there's nothing like trying to implement an algorithm, checking your implementation against a reference, having boilerplate/utility code for the parts of the algorithm you're not interested in re-implementing. Also, code may clarify an algorithm, even when presented in pseudo-code. By the way, MLAPP has rather few pseudo-code boxes (like BRML or PRML, while PGM is very good here).- MLAPP is not freely available as a PDF (unlike BRML, closest topic-wise, ESL, or ITILA). This will no doubt reduce its diffusion. My own take on the underlying controversy is in favor of distributing the PDF: makes successful books widely popular and cited (think ITILA or Rasmussen and Williams' Gaussian Processes), increases the book's overall value, equips readers with a weightless copy to annotate with e-ink, or consult on the go. I believe PDF versions positively impact sales, too: impact neutral-to-positive to course textbook/university library sales, indifferent to sales in countries with widely different purchase power, positive to all other segments due to enormous diffusion/popularity.* Conclusion:The closest contender to this book I believe is BRML. Both are excellent textbooks and have accompanying source code.BRML is more accessible, has a free PDF version, and a stronger focus on graphical models.MLAPP has all the qualities of an excellent graduate textbook (unified presentation, valuable learning aids), and yet is unafraid of discussing detail points (e.g. omnipresent results on complexity), as well as advanced and research topics (LDA, L1 regularization).

I'm sure if you are a Google Research Scientist and are not learning the material for the first time, this book is amazing. For everyone else, I would not recommend it. I bought this book for my Fall 2013 COMPSCI 571 class, and I regret it. Before buying this book, consider the following:1. Take a look at the online Errata. This book is already in it's 3rd printing and it just came out. The list of corrections for this (the 3rd edition) is already mind-numbingly long. The 4th printing coming out this month will surely fix some errors, but there are just too many.2. Our class has an online forum (for a 100 person class) where we discuss topics, and most questions are either (a) basic topics from the book that no one understood or (b) talking about how one figure in the book has multiple errors associated with it. At first I was really excited to find mistakes and submit them to the Errata - it was like I was part of the book! Now I just get frustrated and have already given up on submitting corrections.3. Our instructor regrets using this book and modifies the examples before giving them to us in class. Our out of class readings now consist mostly of MetaAcademy.com.4. There are hardly any worked-through examples, and many of those that are worked through have errors.5. Many important concepts are skimmed over way too quickly. For example, there is a whole chapter on Logistic regression. However, Logistic regression is covered for exactly 2 pages. Then a weird 3D graph is presented but not explained (a common theme throughout the book is graphs that look absolutely amazing, but which convey little information as to exactly what's going on to a lay-person like me), then the rest of the chapter presents methods for doing the math, which I'm sure are useful in some sense, but I'm still thinking: "why is this MLE not in closed form, what is a Hessian doing here... and wtf is going on?!"Most students just got the PDF for free online, and I would highly suggest doing something other than paying $55 for this book.

Frank Cho: Women- Selected Drawings Book Two gathers some of Frank Cho's finest drawings; some high lighting the models upon which he based the drawings, featuring details about the models, followed by renderings in black and white followed by what represents an attempt to show how the transition is made into color, as well as sketches made in pencil and those rendered in ink, by someone considered to be a rising star in graphic illustrations and constitutes a fine study of the female figure by an award winning artist; the finest black and white drawing with great detail which constitutes an excellent study in lighting, high lights and shadows being Seduction and the finest in ink being 50 Girls 50.Highly recommended.

I love Frank Cho! He's a great illustrator and he draws women beautifully. Pound for pound one of the best there is.The 1st Women book was amazing! Tons of content. Tons of sketches. Tons of pin-ups. His work from Marvel to Liberty Meadows and beyond. The 2nd book is lack-luster by comparison. There isn't tons of content. On one side of the book are the sketches and on the other are the inked versions of the SAME SKETCHES! What you're really getting is half the content doubled (once penciled and then inked). It was a bit of a rip-off and I wouldn't recommend it for anyone looking for the BEST of Frank Cho's work.

It's a book of pinup art. Could it sit comfortably next to Moran, Elvgrin, Vargas, Mozert, De Berardinis?Almost half of the book are color plates and that is a big improvement over the first book. Most of the color is digital by Nikos Koutsis, Nei Ruffino, Brandon Peterson, etc. The digital color is, for the most part, pretty average; not great, but not too bad either. One exception is "The Queen's Bath" with Brandon Peterson as the colorist. This is excellent and shows more attention to detail rather than simply using flood fills and gradients. But, truthfully, the best colorist is Frank Cho who has a few near the back of the book including a clean version of the cover which looks like it may have taken some inspiration from Gustav Klimt. All of the color plates have either the final pen & ink version or a preliminary sketch. The sketches are all good choices.Yes, this book is two-thirds the size of it's predecessor and if you prefer quantity over quality then this may be a factor for you. It wasn't a factor for me.There is no paper book cover on the hard bound edition which is a minor complaint and not worth knocking a star off. There is a forward by Geof Darrow (Shaolin Cowboy) which is amusing and gives the book a little more character. So I asked the question on how Cho's color pinups hold up next to other pinup artists... sadly, the digital coloring, with a few exceptions don't fare so well. Cho's own paintings, though, are just as good as any of the artists I've mentioned (although Olivia De Berardinis has a much broader vocabulary) and it was really nice to see some of that in this book.

In thIs second volume of his Women series Frank does it again. And by 'it' I mean provide our eyes with a smorgasbord of beautiful, strong and, at times, sensual and funny womanhood. These aren't wafer thin runway models, however. Lucky for us Cho likes his women with curves. Those curves might be plump butts or full breasts. They might be rounded shoulders and powerful thighs. Usually though, it's both.

Best comic style pinup tutorial that i have found i would recommend this for anyone who enjoys drawing beautiful women

nicely arranged fragments, sketches and drawings by an outstanding artist of the latest generation great for education, inspiration, and imagination

Frank Cho is the man who loves his cheesecake but he also loves to draw and knows when to put a line down and when to leave it out. His technique is almost flawless and he improves by degrees. He's in a tenuous place where his popularity could lead to stagnation, and, in some ways that is starting to show. I'm sure many would be fine with that. Not me.He has a lot of promise and I hope he continues to push himself. The content is fairly standard but even there he shows a love for rendering. The title leaves nothing the imagination as to its content. He has a singularly nice take on female form but he does need to consider mixing it up. To see him do a variety of attractive women should be his next goal but he is in comics so it's hard to imagine much pressure on his part to expand, and that's a shame. Catering to the fans who want a type, and define artists by that type is the dead end for innovation as an artist. Even a best selling popular one needs to look beyond the comfort zone and the, often, shallow demands of the fans to find the better artist residing in the recesses of a once creative drive.Frank is very talented and he needs to show it by taking some risks. That said, this is fine for what it, is but not for what it could be. That he does it so well is still very satisfying, as long as the viewer doesn't ponder those possibilities and opportunities being missed.

not enough different from the first, but the images are beautiful

I have read the Martin Bora books in a rather back to front fashion, coming to this the first one available in English with the knowledge of what happens to him in later adventures. In a strange way I thinks it helped coming to the young rookie military policeman after knowing his later self. In "Lumen", Bora first experiences the horrors of war as waged by the Wehrmacht in Poland in 1939. He comes from the minor Prussian aristocracy where military service, honour, courage and loyalty defines the man. I found Ben Pastor's plot clever and very instructive. I only wish that her full output of Bora books could be translated into English as I am fascinated to discover what he learns at Stalingrad and before that in France.

Highly original plot, time frame and characters. Captain Martin Bora is a Wehrmacht officer with a hyper sense of honor and patriotism who finds himself in the early stages of WWII (Poland 1939) fighting for an amoral regime already up to its ears in genocide and atrocities against noncombatant civilians. Bora is part of the German occupying forces in Krakow, Poland's cultural capital, directing mop-up operations against remnants of the Polish Army and evolving elements of a local resistance. His immediate superior has become attached to a Catholic mystique--the Mother Superior of a famous abbey. The nun is murdered in the cloister of the abbey and Captain Bora is ordered to investigate by his superior. The procedural that develops is unique in its inclusion of a running discussion of theology, honor and Catholic church doctrine. Bora's investigation is complicated by a second murder and by the ongoing interference of his new superior (a Nazi eugenics fanatic) and by German security forces (SS and SD) who have embarked on a terror campaign against Polish Jews and other minorities. Bora's faith in his commitment to his country, profession and faith is under constant attack, and a betrayal by his wife is an almost fatal blow.Of the three Martin Bora books in print, this one (the first) is probably the most challenging to the reader, but is quite fine in its own way. The two books that follow continue Bora's progress through the gradually ebbing fortunes of the German forces and moral dilemmas evolve in those circumstances. A thoughtful and entertaining series by an excellent writer.

Set in the months following the German invasion of Poland in 1939, this first book in the Martin Bora series follows a Captain in the Intelligence arm of the German army who is tasked with solving the murder of a famous Polish nun in Cracow (aka Krakow). He's given a sidekick or sorts, in the form of a visiting Catholic priest from Chicago, who has been sent by the Vatican to write a report about the nun as a possible candidate for sainthood. Meanwhile, he must also deal with the odious womanizing officer he is roommates with, and the troubling increase in civilian killings he learns of. Captain Bora is a thoughtful, university educated, sober soldier, whose notions of honor and law conflict with the wartime reality and his own desires. The result is a mystery that spends a good deal more time on his moral struggles than your typical whodunit. The book does a very good job of placing the reader in the early moments of World War II, as seen through the eyes of a willing soldier who isn't yet aware of the nature of the beast he's a part of. Some of the book's best moments are when Bora comes into contact and conflict with the SS, who are clearly engaged in some completely different and separate agenda from his own straightforward military one. There are other nice details, such as references to Bora's previous service in Spain during the Civil War, and a tense meeting with a Soviet unit (recall that at the time, Germany and the USSR split Poland between them). Unfortunately, the period detail isn't enough to sustain the somewhat plodding pace of the story, which wheezes slowly through Bora's investigation of the nun's killing and a subplot involving several Polish actresses involved with his roommate. There's also a lot of discussion of religion and faith with the Chicago priest that didn't connect with me at all. The premise of a German army "detective" is a good one, but on the whole it feels like a first book in need of an experienced editor who could give it a little more shape and trim some of the fat. Originally written and published in 1999, it has been republished in conjunction with the second in the series, Liar Moon.

Pastor is a very good writer, very evocative of time and place, and decent delineation of characters. A relief after reading several books by amateurs who think they can write. Good plot, although I suspected one of the perpetrators from the beginning. However, I did not find it to be a page turner, it required some effort to stick with it, partially because none of the characters were engaging and the author has some quirks in her style. For one, she leads up to what seems like it would be an important statement or revelation and then stops. It usually turns out later that the issue is not particularly relevant to the story. She's good, and I'll read more, but she's no Cruz Smith, Furst, or Kerr. I followed this book with Smith's "Wolves Eat Dogs" which I can't put down.

Pastor writes some truly amazing sentences. A lot of them might seem obtuse at first (they certainly did to me) but actually just require you to sit and wait and think about exactly what she's saying with each word and phrase. I would recommend this series for Pastor's wordplay alone, but the story is also fascinating. Horrifying look at the Holocaust and human corruption. It's an incredibly bleak story. I wouldn't recommend it purely as a mystery novel, as Pastor has a way of making the mystery plot unsatisfying. The series isn't "let's solve the mystery," but a deep character study of Martin Bora, a character who happens to sometimes be assigned mysteries to "solve."Four stars instead of five because I sometimes felt the plot was dragging.
