Very disappointing. Misled by the favorable reviews. There are long slogs of over-written description. The plot reads like a bad satire of a draft that Phillip Roth or Saul Bellow tossed out. Cliches abound and nothing much really happens.
Gave up half way through. While much of the writing is beautiful and the concept is fascinating, it is so overwritten and pretentious that you lose the forest for the myriad little trees. Wish it was half the length and the author had allowed the narrative to flow instead of continuously trying to show how incisive and astute he is about the details of NY Jewish life.
I am not sure why this book had such great reviews. Instead of a book I couldn’t put down, it was a book I had trouble picking up. I made myself finish it this weekend and it was like reading about a slow motion train wreck. I found it very difficult to care about Professor Cohen who seemed to be written as a very dull stereotype. I actually found the secondary story to be much more interesting. Where the stories met were presented as a so-what. I think that could have been explored as opposed to endless detailed description of Cohen’s puking and decrepitude and penile fantasies.
This book grabbed me from the start and never let up. I don't go for books about middle age crisis, but this author, (where has he been all this time? ) knows his craft perhaps because he is an academic like the protagonist? The weaving of the Talmud tractates in the plot is ingenious, it helps to have some knowledge of the high priest's role in Yom Kippur but this is spelled out in great detail. I won't go into the storyline but this is a great book.
The book was an amazing literary feat. The book is about a zjewish professor in NY. He has some sort of psychotic break with visions of horror, sex, Bosch, and terror. It is interspersed with portions of the Old Testament.. Be warned. Do not buy the book in Kindle as certain portions are illegible . The writing is vivid, alive with smells, sounds, and tastes
It’s been a while since I’ve absolutely devoured a book like this: I can only compare it to my favorites of Amos Oz and A.B. Yehoshua. The magical descriptions of sunlight at different times of the day are just the beginning. Namdar paints a picture of a man moving into a crisis, in life or in his mind, and that picture is at once delicately detailed and drawn with great imaginative gestures that lead you to believe you too are seeing and hearing an angelic choir. Telling a universal story and one that is deeply personal, too, The Ruined House leads you to moments in time and moments in history (you choose—your own, our collective and national history, maybe your family history) that feel achingly familiar.
Interesting story and format for a double narrative.
There are several pages (more than 8 pages) of the novel with pages of the Talmud which are essential to the story. In the Kindle version either pages are illegible. I had to buy the hardcover in order to read the novel. I have asked Amazon for a refund.Wonderful book by the way!
