Without a doubt, this is one of the best/ most thorough/most accessible histories on the origins of Christianity, charismatic Judaism, and Gnosticism. Jenkins touches on numerous pertinent subjects - topics that have largely been neglected - that are crucial for any student of Biblical history to comprehend; to include, Enochic literature, apocalyptic literature, and a thorough history of the Maccabean War.

The purpose of this book is the illuminate the 300 or so tumultuous years in Palestine prior to the common era (CE). This involves a confluence of political, cultural, philosophical, and theological issues that range from essential and basic to indescribably obscure. The "crucible era", as Jenkins calls it, forged the theological building blocks of what would become rabbinic Judaism, Christianity, and even Islam. Jenkins concentrates on both the final formation of the canonical Old Testament and a number of discarded texts, including Enoch, the Dead Sea Scrolls, and many others that were found either as archaeological artifacts or as the living canon of such sources as the Ethiopian Old Testament. Unfortunately, the book is rather academic in tone, which often makes it a slog as a read, however interesting many sections of it are.On the political front, the time is one of extraordinary violence. On the one hand, there are foreign powers seeking to dominate the region. In the beginning, there were the Ptolemies and Seleucids, both of them Hellenistic Greek Empires that arose after the death of Alexander the Great. Palestine served as a kind of buffer zone between them, changing hands many times. As they weakened, the Maccabees emerged as successful revolutionaries who established an independent Jewish state, eventually called the Hasmonean dynasty. The Hasmoneans had to war against many rival claimants to the true faith, e.g. the Samaritans, who had their own communities and city states. Finally, toward the end of the period, the Romans conquered the region, bringing their own style of oppression and influence. On the other hand, there was a civil war from within: rabbinic Judaism was in formation, pitting a traditional priestly aristocracy against popular, scholarly rivals who claimed to better understand God's intentions. Culturally, moreover, there is a great ferment of ideas, ranging from Greco-Roman philosophy and polytheism to alternative forms of monotheism in Persia, all of which impacted and were absorbed to different degrees. What emerged in the religious sphere was the development of a number of notions that were alluded to only vaguely in the Old Testament, if indeed at all. Many of them sought to address some of the issues that sprung from monotheism, e.g. how can evil exist and flourish when God was omnipotent and purely good? The answer was to elaborate conceptions of the afterlife, where the good and just would live in immortal paradise while the wicked would suffer eternal punishment. Moreover, evil was explained away by the existence of devils and demons, fallen angels and human-demon hybrids that God for inexplicable reasons allowed to live in a banished realm, Hell; identifiable angels and demons proliferated in this period. Furthermore, given the imminent dangers of death and destruction, the concept of the Apocalypse - the end fight between good and evil forces - emerged as a central concept. Finally, a messiah would be the instrument through which the righteous would be guided and then saved. Thus, Jesus appeared as one of many apocalyptic messianic prophets at the end of this period. As a result, a vast array of new groups were born, each touting some interpretation of these ideas and incorporating varying elements of foreign notions to address whatever dilemmas they deemed were needed, often in isolated communities that gave free range to fanatical devotions that they elaborated in apocalyptic detail. Here you find the early Christian sects, rabbinic Judaism, but also the Manichees, Zoroastrians, and innumerable others. Moreover, canonical texts were established while many of the older ones were revived and occasionally edited to better fit the times. As you can imagine, this is complexity itself. I found it fascinating and, as an atheist, wonder how anyone could believe that one interpretation would be correct over the others and hence eternally sacred. It is not always clear where the book is going, particularly as Jenkins felt compelled to cover all of the variations in lengthy, turgid descriptions of what various sources say. I found it hard to keep them straight, even as an amateur scholar of early Christianity and the late Classical era. I also would have liked much more coverage of the impact of Hellenistic ideas on all of this, though Jenkins alludes it to a degree. Though Jenkins is a conservative Episcopalian, I would note that the tone of the book is secular and not in any way advocating for a particular sect. The level of the book is quite advanced. With much knowledge assumed, many basic concepts are not completely explained, such as the mechanics of the Roman administration or the innovations of Neo-platonism. This makes much of the book hard going for the uninitiated, though also stimulating for the curious (and dogged).Though I am not a specialist, I believe this to be an important book. (Heck, anything that gets people interested in the Seleucids is OK by me!) I enjoyed looking at the footnotes for further source materials, always a sign that I was engaged deeply. I recommend this book as a fun intellectual adventure, however lugubrious many passages are.

This is an incredible book for any person seriously interested in religion. If you pose the question "what happened between the Hebrew scriptures and the New Testament?", I think most persons who are literate with either of these would have trouble answering that question. Philip Jenkins answers it in this book. I found his explanation of the split between Judaism and Christianity in the second century CE particularly interesting. It is in this period between the fifth century BCE and the second century CE that a huge volume of religious literature appears, most of which is not now included in the Jewish or Christian canon. In these writings, first appear Satan as a named fallen angel, numerous references to angels, Hell as described by the Middle Ages, resurrection, a concern about an afterlife, and the appearance of the Apocalypse. The book is well written, and is intended for a lay audience.

Philip Jenkins provides a panoramic and in-depth assessment of the historical trends and conditions that prevailed in the intertestamental period. This book provides good information for the armchair theologian or the working pastor who want to enhance their knowledge of this period which is often ignored or overlooked in conventional histories and biblical commentaries.

As stated by the author, this is indeed a time period I have given little time to studying and understanding. I have read about some of these religious ideas, but the author does a excellent job of creating a comprehensive picture of several cultures beyond the Roman Empire. (Which takes all the lesson times in history classes.)

A complex subject is explained in non-technical language. The author presents a well summarized picture of the development of religion from age to age.

Jenkins is an outstanding religious historian of this era.

Eye-opening. Jenkins has made a solid contribution to the developments that preceded Christianity.

Review

"In this sturdy and enlightening work, Thich Nhat Hanh explores seven key meditations... with ample grace and abounding insights. We were immensely impressed with Thich Nhat Hanh's writings on aimlessness and resting in God; impermanence and the futility of trying to live forever; and the art of letting go as a means of releasing our suffering." - Spirituality & Practice"In elegant prose, stitched with stories from his Vietnamese homeland and years in Paris, Hanh lays out wisdom from the poignant to the practical...The Art of Living offers an exit ramp from the madness of modern-day overdrive, and just might let us grasp the heaven on Earth." - Chicago Tribune

Based on the last full talks before his sudden hospitalization, and drawing on intimate examples from his own life, he shows us how these seven meditations can free us to live a happy, peaceful, and active life, and face aging and dying with curiosity and joy and without fear.Containing the essence of the Buddha’s teachings and Thich Nhat Hanh’s poignant, timeless, and clarifying prose, The Art of Living provides a spiritual dimension to our lives. This is not an effort to escape life or to dwell in a place of bliss outside of this world. Instead, this path will allow us to discover where we come from and where we are going. And most of all, it will generate happiness, understanding, and love so we can live deeply in each moment of our life, right where we are.

I've read nearly every book written by Thich Nhat Hanh and have attended many talks and retreats. This book is his best yet and sums up decades of teaching and profound wisdom in the beautiful, simple and eloquent style that Thich Nhat Hanh has perfected and that makes him one of the great spiritual teachers and leaders of all time. Read it and you'll see what I mean..

World famous Buddhist monk and peace activist (he coined the phrase “engaged Buddhism”) Thich Nhat Hanh, now 91, entered a monastery in Viet Nam at age 16. During the Vietnam War he came to the United States where he taught comparative religion at Princeton and was a Buddhism lecturer at Columbia. He is fluent in French, Chinese, Sanskrit, Pali, Japanese, and English in addition to his native Vietnamese. He returned to Vietnam in 1963 where he aided his fellow monks in nonviolent peace efforts and established a university. He traveled to the United States to promote peace between North and South Vietnam and was denied reentry into the country which began a long exile. He has since established his home monastery in France and others in the U.S., Australia, Hong Kong, Thailand, Vietnam, and Germany. He has authored more than 100 books. This one, edited by his monastic students, sums up the essence of the last lectures he gave before his stroke in 2014, and these lectures sum up the essence of his teachings. He offers deep insight on what it means to be alive and what it means to die. True to his Buddhist roots with numbered lists, he offers liberation from the three “wrong views” and three major practices plus four additional practices. This small 200-page book is jam-packed with solid wisdom. You can sense this teacher’s embodiment of his teachings which gives them added power. Whether speaking, walking, doing calligraphy, engaged in social action, or dealing with a stroke, Thich Nhat Hanh has always walked the walk.

I bought a couple copies of this book to loan out to my friends and family to read. While many of Thay's books share the same fundamental practices and teachings, this one included, I felt this one was a good refresher and covered many relevant areas for people of all backgrounds. Thay's writing is beautiful, poetic, and easy to read as always. Highly recommend for those seeking to better understand how mindfulness can change your life.

I enjoy almost all of Thich Nhat Hanh's books and this one is a keeper. I know some of his material can be repetitious, but this volume is a relaxing read. Many words of wisdom and gentle guidance.

I've read Thich's small but powerful books for a long time. Using a minimal of words he sets you on a good path in this life. This book contains the essence of his knowledge in a book that was written by some followers. The last several chapters knocked me out! So crisp and clear! Our true home is in the present moment.

How did he fit so much into one book? This is a clear and concise presentation of core Buddhist psychology at the same time that it is poetic and heartfelt. Essential for students of Thich Nhat Hanh and mind blowing for everyone else.

Everyone should have at least one copy. Two is better. One to carry and one for home, or don't leave home without it.Wonderful wonderful wise and witty insights that make me feel connected to the whole wide world. Truly a "must have".Brilliant, insightful and funny. My new best friend.

An inspiring summary of the ideas, Thich That Hanh explained in his other books. This book presents his philosophy in a concise manner, If you have read any of his book, this book would be a great addition to your collection.

Lisa Tawn Bergren has written a series of lovely children's books featuring the polar bear family. Mama and Papa and Grampa Bear teach lessons of life and faith to the little bears. In Bergren's newest offering, God Gave Us Christmas, Mama Bear and Little Cub leave Papa at home with the baby cubs as they go on a trip to learn the meaning of Christmas. Mama Bear, in her wisdom, does not disillusion Little Cub about Santa, but makes sure Little Cub knows that God, not Santa, invented Christmas.Mama Bear takes Little Cub to see God. They see the northern lights, and the power of glaciers. But most importantly, they see Joseph and Mary and Jesus, and talk about the real meaning of Christmas. As Mama Bear says, "Jesus is the best present of all. . . . Jesus is a present for everyone, grumpy or happy, mean or kind. God gave us all Christmas."God Gave Us Christmas will delight fans of Bergren's bear family books. This new one features art by David Hohn, instead of Laura Bryant. He maintains the style and characters recognizably, but I tend to like Bryant's work better. Nevertheless, it's a cute story, with pretty pictures, and communicates the real meaning of Christmas in an engaging way.

A Beautiful story that includes both Santa and Jesus. My husband and I are Christians, and really want our daughter to grow up knowing the true meaning of Christmas, but we also want her to have the fun of Santa Claus; this book is really perfect for our family values. It is such a sweet story about God being everywhere and giving us wonderful gifts. I love this book, and it is going to be part of our Christmas tradition for many years.

A nice story to help children see the link between Christmas, Jesus, God and Santa. A little too much for my 2.5 year old, so more recommended for 3 and up

Such a cute book !!! I love how it talks about Santa and says he has a part, but God is What Christmas is really about. Highly recommend !

I have really struggled to find a book that had the true meaning of Christmas so clearly spelled out for my son (who is 3) WITHOUT turning around and telling him "so Christmas is not about Santa or presents or lights and decorations" in such a clear either/or Jesus vs Santa mentality. He is 3, so we wanted a way for him to be able to embrace the real meaning of Christmas AND be able to participate in other Christmas traditions like parades and lights and yes, even Santa. This is the first book I have found that BEAUTIFULLY incorporates the fun and the magic of Santa and lights and Christmas traditions right into the meaning of Jesus birth at Christmas time. No more either/or this vs/ that. Finally a way to teach kids the true meaning of the season WITHOUT making them feel guilty for their excitement over Santa and stockings as well. LOVE IT.

Very sweet book. Bought two years ago, and my 4 year old has wanted to read it twice this week at bed time (we read Christmas, Advent, Santa, etc. books during December). It helps point kids to Jesus, amidst the craziness of commercial Christmas. Santa is mentioned, but as a symbol of generosity, as St. Nicholas originally was. I have several books by this author, and am I big fan of her ability to relate to children.

This book is far too long and the concepts too complex for it's intended audience. I am an early childhood teacher with 40 years of experience, and while it appears to be a book for a preschool aged child, the contents are too complex. They started out ok, but kind of lost their way in carrying the book contents too far, trying to explain how God and Santa can exist together harmoniously for Christmas, etc. It might work for older kids conceptually, 6-8 years, but they are giving up on Santa around then anyway, and the Mama and Little Bear format is too juvenile past Kindergarten in my opinion.

Before buying this, people should know that it's full of baby-talk and misspelled words that are supposed to be cute (and apparently a lot of people like this type of thing since the reviews are mainly positive). I won't read it to my child, but everyone can make their own decision. For us, it was written in a way that was insulting to children and talked down to them. The content isn't a problem, it's just the style of writing, so this book isn't terrible, it's just not for us (at all).If you're okay with baby-talk and words that are spelled incorrectly to mimic how children talk, then you'll be okay with this book. If you find that sort of thing annoying and improper, you should avoid it.

This is a very sweet book that helps little ones understand the true meaning of Christmas. I am excited to gift this to my little one on Christmas Eve. I know he is going to love it, because he loves books in general and the illustrations of the animals are sure to make any little one smile.
