This book gives you a better view and understanding of Handel's Messiah.
In exploring both the message and the music of "Messiah," I found this to be an excellent text.
Listening to Messiah is one of my Advent & Christmas practices. I find the music uplifting (both the musical score and the biblical texts used) and it helps me focus on the spiritual meaning of Christmas. I was introduced to Messiah gradually in high school, when we sang parts of it in the annual Christmas concert in the rural north central Pennsylvania town of Port Allegany. (So much as been lost by the abandonment of singing sacred music in schools at Christmas in favor of a "Winterfest.") Even when in high school, I bought an LP of Sir Thomas Beecham conducting a massive choir and orchestra performing Messiah. Now my wife and I often attend a performance each year in the Washington, DC area by the National Philharmonic Orchestra and choir. Always uplifting.I have a long-standing practice of daily reading Scripture, so the biblical background presented by Roger Bullard in this book was already familiar. His explanation of the biblical text often took me deeper in my understanding, especially of the Old Testament background. He writes probably for a biblically-aware reader. The content was very good. His explanations when needed of the King James translation (and others) were helpful.I think this book will take me to a new level of appreciation of Messiah. I'd recommend it for all those wanting their experience of Messiah to be even richer and deeper. I'm going to give a copy of the book to one of my sons who tries to listen to Messiah during the Advent & Christmas seasons.
I just finished reading this wonderful book by Prof. Bullard on Christmas Eve and the day after I performed Messiah as part of Masterwork Chorus at Carnegie Hall.This is the second year I sang Messiah, but this time I appreciated it much more than last time. The main reason is because not only I can appreciate each singing, but also I can enjoy the connections between those seeming isolated singing by soloists and the chorus. That's due to my pastor recommended three books on Messiah. This book, written by a theology professor and Messiah singer, is both theological strong and passionately written--good for both the mind and the soul, the brain and the heart. Many parts of the book can be incorporated into sermons I believe. As the title suggests, this book is written in style of biblical and systematic theology by connecting the various of Bible passages from both Old and New Testaments. To me, it also posses a covenant theology bent-to string the whole Bible, in this case, Messiah (gospel according to Handel's oratorio) from point of God's everlasting covenant with His people. My pastor informed me that in fact covenant theology was strong in 18th century.Through this book not only I can appreciate much better what I am singing, I also admire how much Messiah's librettist and Handel know their Bible, and how much God's Word was such strong foundation in the culture of that age!
